  • Thumbs up if you also thought that 80% of the reason Airplane was funny was because of the soundtrack.

  • So many marvelous scores were given to us from the maestro. Incomparable talent.

  • No Cape Fear, Seventh Voyage of Sinbad, or Psycho! Cmon dude! This list needs to be longer!

  • @hardrockerofsoccer All those were composed by Bernard Herrmann.

  • @beklovesmusic Bernstein composed for the Scorsese remake of Cape Fear, I think that's what he ment.

  • Terrific selection of the work of a musical genius - Elmer Bernstein - and many more could be added, and I hope are - to these selections of the late , great Film Music composer - simply the best !

  • In my memory there is room for many composers; Morricone, Myers, Goldsmith, et. al. But there are two places that are for Bernstein and can never be replaced; one for "To Kill a Mockingbird", and the other, in tribute to so many John Wayne westerns, and as a final tribute to the Duke, "The Shootist". God Bless, Bernstein, and thanks for all the pleasure you have given.

  • the master

  • Simply-- a great talent..

  • God bless Elmer Bernstein.

  • great composer he done some great scores in hiscareer ranging from magnificent seven to ghostbusters he is very missed long live the bernstein!

  • WHERE

    IS

    ANIMAL

    HOUSE

    ?!?!

  • From which recordings are these tracks taken? Please can you let me know.

  • When Elmer Bernstein. didn't win the academy award in 1966 for the score of "Hawai" , I said, " the academy awards are a fraud! " I was 12 . If he just did Mocking Bird, or the Great Esacpe his place would be assured...of a the very greatest film composers ever imo

  • Genius.

  • que gran talento !!

  • Airplane music is fantastic.

  • He has obviously got a thing for brass winds.

  • @PersianPianist12 More like only brass winds can make such an epic "movie" sound.

  • 50 years of great work! Only Bernard Herrmann and Lalo Schifrin can claim something like that.

    The Great Escape.

    The Magnificent 7

    Ghostbusters

Stripes and Heavy Metal (both 1981) were fine too.

Always thought he did "Nightmare on Elm Street", but that was apparently Charles Bernstein (no relation to Elmer)

  • Man benydebney, the way how you fuse and edit the scores together and make them transit so fluidly and natural on all of the "Greatest Hits" video you've posted is just TERRIFIC. It feels like all of the scores were just one big soundtrack/ song on this video; in other words and to put it simply, YOUR EDITING IS FANTASTIC!!!

  • We are all very fortunate to have grown up with masters like these! Thanks for this great post!

  • So wonderful! I was literally raised on Bernstein, Newman, Waxman, Korngold, Stothart, and Steiner. It is so very nice to see that others can also enjoy these wonderful works. Thanks for posting!

  • What ,no "Carpetbaggers?" It's the best thing about the movie. Also, "The Comancheros". I watch the opening credits just for the theme. Loved this man's music.

  • You're like John Williams in Oscar's Night. Great Job man, thanks a lot for your videos.

  • Bernstein was, not only, a genius at music, but, also at understanding the human heart.

  • You did it again benydebney. Wonderful tribute to a great musician, Mr. Elmer Bernstein. Thank you very much.

  • this guy did so many movies, its amazing looking over the films hes done. From clasics like "To Kill a Mockingbird" to classic bombs like "Leonard Part 6"

  • chills on first one

  • Great to hear 'TMM', for which Elmer won his only Oscar. He should have won for 'TMS', 'TKAM' and, lastly, 'Days of Heaven'.

  • @jslasher1 Days of Heaven wasn't been scored by Elmer Bernstein, that was Ennio Morricone.

  • @jslasher1 You mean "Far From Heaven"...Beautiful score indeed.

  • I read To Kill A Mockingbird while listening to Elmer's score. And boy did it help

  • his theme for Riverboat was fabulous: its not on youtube except in bits and pieces, someone should post the full things, its quite stirring

  • terrific. thank you. I forgot how much I loved the score for "10 Commandments." Breathtaking. Really. Thanks again.

  • My favorite film composer by far. Dare I say more so than John Williams. Yes, I do!

  • EXCELLENT!

  • there's one missing that stands out as elmer Bernstiens best, and sorrofully, it's not here either! Heavy Metal Movie Score, Denn's Theme! If you can find it, it's well worth it!

  • @Dreaded88

I agree fully. The Heavy Metal score is such a gem. Whenever I'm writing essays for school I usually find it on here to listen to. Its such an inspiration. "Dana's Theme" from Ghostbusters is also a must!

  • @mattclose555 Yes, I agree with that as well. And thanks!

  • @mattclose555 Incidentally: where'd you find your copy of the score?

  • He's always been my favorite. AMAZING talent.

  • The themes to The Magnificent Seven and The Great Escape are what movie music are all about.

  • excellent compilation

  • LOVE them!

A bit sorry that I didn't see one of my top five favourites, The Gypsy Moths (1969).

  • love john williams, alex north, alfred newman, miklos rozsa, but i must admit elmer bernstien's range of genres and variety is remarkable!!

  • I was surprised to find his name connected to a Disney movie like The Black Cauldron.

  • A smashing collection of works from a composer of great versatility, very neatly linked and synchronised with film posters, well done!

  • I agree, great work, thanks!

  • elmer bernstein, max steiner, jerry goldsmith, john williams, danny elfman, ennio morricone...so many great film composers...

  • I bet he'd be more popular with a different first name

  • The Ten Commandments theme is gorgeous!

  • what a composer he did so many great soundtracks in the same class as john williams and jerry goldsmith

  • You have to admire a talent that can compose for movies ranging from the Ten Commandments to Airplane!

  • There is only three words that I could use to describe the music god known as Elmer Bernstein: Brillian, brutal and beautiful. The three B's. I think he's better than the highly overrated John Williams.

  • @lupoistheman1 ,

I think Elmer Bernstein is better than Williams! Sue me! The guy makes the Star Wars theme and all of a sudden, he's the greatest composer of all time? Bullshit!

  • not many people know but Elmer Berner is author one's of the most famous intro to television programmes or soundtrack to "National Geographic"

  • Hallelujah!!! And thank you!

  • One of the greatest composers

  • lol my name is elmar borgonia

  • magnificent!!

  • Hey mate, great video, honestly. The transition between "The Great Escape" and "The Magnificent Sevens" is just superve.

I hat the great opportunity to see Mr. Bernstein live in Barcelona during a concert, and it was a wonderful experience.

  • EXCELENTES BANDAS SONORAS !!

  • He scored so many classics!!!

  • his music is amazing!

  • Thank you for this compilation of the greatest film composer ever. His music could make a great film greater, especially the incomparable "The Great Escape."

  • Maravilloso!!!!!

  • Where's Heavy Metal and The Good Son? Those are two beautiful scores.

  • love the age of innocence score - my favorite score, beautiful and sad

  • Thank you so much for compiling this wonderful collection - a living tribute to Elmer Bernstein. Well done!

  • Elmer Bernstein; Jerry Goldsmith; John Williams.... All from the Silver Age of Hollywood, all three masters of score compositions and all three my all time favorites. Long live the three kings of film music!!!

  • @avatarnarutochuck Actually, Elmer and Jerry are from The Golden Age; John is from the Silver Age; the rest of the current crop are from The Special Effects Age.

  • @jslasher1 My mistake. But if we're to be technical, Jerry Goldsmith & John Williams have started film composing just a year from each other. Elmer Bernstein started just 5-6 years earlier than them.

  • LOVE the theme of Magnificent Seven!!!

    Thx for uploading :)

  • channel 76 XM radio.....plays all these and more.

  • I am looking to the musik from 3.000 Meilen Jagd "The 3,000 Mile Chase",. can you help? Thx

  • this is so cool. this is the musical manifestation of the most epic of ideals and the noblest of human emotions. LOL it makes me want to be so poetic

  • Surprising what a Jew, can do, with a Needle and Thread...

  • Surprising what an Inbred can do when he a' lurns' ta' spell a few words.

  • You did an outstanding job on this video.

Thanks for posting. Great musical scores all of them.

  • Thank you very much! :-)

  • @benydebney Yes great job, love it.

  • @lionssong2525 My favorite was the one for The Ten Commandments.

  • The master of memories

  • Bernstien's score for To Kill a Mocking Bird was a head of its time.

  • Does anyone have hiw Wild Wild West Score on ehre anywhere? i can't find the score he did for that movie.... by score I mean songsw BTW.

  • Fucking incredible. What amazes me most, he also did music for CAT WOMEN OF THE MOON and ROBOT MONSTER... Then turns around and does MAN WITH THE GOLDEN ARM and THE TEN freaking COMMANDMENTS.

  • is the good son here?

  • For me, no one can top Mr. Elmer Bernstein. My favorite of his is the one from To Kill A Mockingbird

  • Thank you very much for posting this. Thank you very much indeed.

  • When was his 'reign' of compositions n stuff? like which era- does he count as a golden age composer?

  • 'Silver Age' probably - his was writing scores from the 50s through till the late 90s, but I think the 60s were the probably high point of his career, even though there were some greats in later years

  • Yep, his a Silver Age era composer. His "gang" includes Jerry Goldsmith and John Williams. Together, they're called the Three Kings of Hollywood Film Scores.

  • Oh that music reminds me a good cig. And a cup of coffee. Marlboro man....

  • Fantástico video, de un fantástico compositor, las banda sonora de 'The great scape' o 'To Kill a Mockingbird' puede que sean mis favoritas, John Williams debería aprender un poco de Bernstein que siempre suena igual (se ha puesto en 'replay').

  • Bernstein forever

  • Bernstein is a great composer,i especially liked the ost he didfor the documentary Genocide

  • Great themes all. What a talent. I love the westerns the best, especially "The Sons of Katie Elder" and "The Magnificent Seven" those all amazing. Bernstein is one of my favorites. I've watched several of your tributes this morning. You've done an excellent job. Many kudos my friend. You timed this one perfectly. Thanks. (Credit to kimber1066 & cinemabon as I shamelessly plagiarized their posts, & they said it all!) 5+**********

  • NPR did a great story on him when he passed away. Still online, I think. Amazing composer. And speaking of music in movies, around Oscar time, NPR always runs a bit on the music nominated. It really opens my eyes to how influential music in a movie is.

  • he was the master, of course! my favorite: True Grit

  • OK you learn new things everyday.I did not know he did Ghostbusters!

  • Bernstein forever !!!

  • Great themes all. What a talent. I love the westerns the best, especially "The Sons of Katie Elder" and "The Magnificent Seven" those all amazing.

  • Bernstein is one of my favorites. I've watched several of your tributes this morning. You've done an excellent job. Many kudos my friend. You timed this one perfectly. Thanks.

  • AND GHOSTBUSTERS!!!!! WHAT!!!!!!!

  • BERNSTEIN WROTE THE SCORE FOR AIRPLANE!!!!!!!! WOW. that's so cool! I didn't no he wrote the score for so many popular movies with great themes. I'm very surprised and am totally in love with his music now.

  • Nice compilation of music of my favorite composer of film scores. I suppose one cannot fit everything in from so vast a career, but I would liked to have seen the video end with my favorite Bernstiem composition, the haunting Taarna's Theme from "Heavy Metal."

  • oops, I meant of course to type Bernstein.

  • Gifted man.

  • Heh heh, Bernstein's photo at the beginning looks a little like Jerry Goldsmith in his youth.

Great selections for an incredible composer, must have been really difficult editing this one. There's so much that he's done.

    Thanks for the Upload.

  • How come everyone always forgets 1962's "Walk on the Wild Side". not only was it nominated for best song. It was also nominated for two Grammys as both best instumental theme and best performance by an orchestra. The Movie itself was a stinker but the opening Credits with that cat walking to the sound of the theme music was one of the best openings ever. Perhaps they should have cut the rest of the film then it might have been a classic.

  • To Kill a Mockinbird is by far my favorite score.

  • I LOVE the Ghostbusters theme! So cooooooooool!

  • Now that's a career you could be proud of!

  • The Grifters is my favorite Bernstein score.

  • the choirs's last chord in Hallelujah Trail is absolutely amazing!

  • the great escape :D

  • To Kill A Mockingbird.....beautiful,,,,haunting...THANK YOU Mr. Elmer!!! You're definitely one of the greatest!

  • this video return me to my favorite films to remember my old good times, memories.

    thanks.

  • Great video! simply marvelous!

  • Falto la musica de la pelicula Heavy Metal 1981

  • EXTRAORDINARIA COMPILATION! Felicitaciones a Beny por el excelentre trabajo.

    Saludos desde Santiago de Chile

  • I always enjoyed Cape Fear. Very haunting composition of his.

  • Elmer Bernstein is so good for Ghostbusters

  • I really like The Sons of Katie Elder. Epitomizes Western themes to me ...

  • I absolutetly love the Great Escape.

  • I can't find the song "The Hallelujah Trail" where can I get it?

  • Someone just posted it on Youtube.

  • NO STRIPES!?!?!?!?

  • I had no idea he had started as early as that.

  • Good call on THE BLACK CAULDRON; I truly consider that one of Bernstein's best.

  • Marvelous work (and I wouldn't dream of complaining either), but I kept waiting for my favorite... the theme to "National Geographic."

  • BenyDebney, thanks for all your work. Another great tribute to a wonderful composer.

  • Thanks for posting all these great soundtrack snippets. EB's soundtracks are some of my all-time favorites.

  • What about My Left Foot. That soundtack is awsome

  • Where's the beautiful theme of the Taarna story from Heavy Metal?

  • I actually love that theme, i was thinking of including it but will have to put in on "Elmer Bernstein - More Greatest Hits", coming soon.

  • When I think of Elmer Bernstein, I think about "The Field". Wonderful score. I suggest that you put it in the second compilation.

    Keep up the good job.

  • Also sadly MIA: Animal House.

  • EB BE DA MAN!

  • His music is very good.

  • Another perfect medley. Not complaining, but where's "True Grit"? Wouldn't dream of complaining. Enjoying it too much. Just saying.

  • what about "I Love You Alice B. Toklas." That's one of his greatest!

  • I'd like to have the theme for "To Kill a Mocking Bird" at my funeral.

  • what about the main theme from "Man with the Golden Arm" ?

  • the great escape :D :D

  • The To Kill a Mockingbird theme just gives me chills.

  • me too!! When I hear it, my entire childhood appears before my eyes. It's such a nostalgic piece for me, having seen the film as a very young boy.

  • Elmer Bernstein is my favorite composer for movies because each of his scores are different. None of them sounded the same like others. The jazzy score of Man With the GOlden Arm, the nostalgia of To Kill A Mockingbird, the whimsicality of Thoroughly Modern Millie, The Magnificent Seven (defied how westerns should be scored) and the gospel inspired Hallelujah Trail. Elmer Berstein was one of the greatest.

  • You opened with my FAVORITE score of all time by any composer! THANK YOU! Seems like this one is a tad neglected by some score enthusiasts lol but this one, The Ten Commandments, introduced me to film scores, along with The Secret of NIMH by Goldsmith. Thank you for posting!

  • This guy wrote some really kick-ass music over the years. Theme songs from movies such as The Magnificent Seven, The Great Escape, The Man With the Golden Arm, Ghostbusters, Stripes et al, will never be forgotten. Thanks for posting this video. I hope many people watch it, then go out and rent the various movies depicted here!
