Terrific selection of the work of a musical genius - Elmer Bernstein - and many more could be added, and I hope are - to these selections of the late , great Film Music composer - simply the best !
In my memory there is room for many composers; Morricone, Myers, Goldsmith, et. al. But there are two places that are for Bernstein and can never be replaced; one for "To Kill a Mockingbird", and the other, in tribute to so many John Wayne westerns, and as a final tribute to the Duke, "The Shootist". God Bless, Bernstein, and thanks for all the pleasure you have given.
When Elmer Bernstein. didn't win the academy award in 1966 for the score of "Hawai" , I said, " the academy awards are a fraud! " I was 12 . If he just did Mocking Bird, or the Great Esacpe his place would be assured...of a the very greatest film composers ever imo

Man benydebney, the way how you fuse and edit the scores together and make them transit so fluidly and natural on all of the "Greatest Hits" video you've posted is just TERRIFIC. It feels like all of the scores were just one big soundtrack/ song on this video; in other words and to put it simply, YOUR EDITING IS FANTASTIC!!!
So wonderful! I was literally raised on Bernstein, Newman, Waxman, Korngold, Stothart, and Steiner. It is so very nice to see that others can also enjoy these wonderful works. Thanks for posting!
What ,no "Carpetbaggers?" It's the best thing about the movie. Also, "The Comancheros". I watch the opening credits just for the theme. Loved this man's music.
this guy did so many movies, its amazing looking over the films hes done. From clasics like "To Kill a Mockingbird" to classic bombs like "Leonard Part 6"
there's one missing that stands out as elmer Bernstiens best, and sorrofully, it's not here either! Heavy Metal Movie Score, Denn's Theme! If you can find it, it's well worth it!
I agree fully. The Heavy Metal score is such a gem. Whenever I'm writing essays for school I usually find it on here to listen to. Its such an inspiration. "Dana's Theme" from Ghostbusters is also a must!
There is only three words that I could use to describe the music god known as Elmer Bernstein: Brillian, brutal and beautiful. The three B's. I think he's better than the highly overrated John Williams.
I think Elmer Bernstein is better than Williams! Sue me! The guy makes the Star Wars theme and all of a sudden, he's the greatest composer of all time? Bullshit!
Thank you for this compilation of the greatest film composer ever. His music could make a great film greater, especially the incomparable "The Great Escape."
Elmer Bernstein; Jerry Goldsmith; John Williams.... All from the Silver Age of Hollywood, all three masters of score compositions and all three my all time favorites. Long live the three kings of film music!!!
@avatarnarutochuck Actually, Elmer and Jerry are from The Golden Age; John is from the Silver Age; the rest of the current crop are from The Special Effects Age.
@jslasher1 My mistake. But if we're to be technical, Jerry Goldsmith & John Williams have started film composing just a year from each other. Elmer Bernstein started just 5-6 years earlier than them.
Fucking incredible. What amazes me most, he also did music for CAT WOMEN OF THE MOON and ROBOT MONSTER... Then turns around and does MAN WITH THE GOLDEN ARM and THE TEN freaking COMMANDMENTS.
'Silver Age' probably - his was writing scores from the 50s through till the late 90s, but I think the 60s were the probably high point of his career, even though there were some greats in later years
Yep, his a Silver Age era composer. His "gang" includes Jerry Goldsmith and John Williams. Together, they're called the Three Kings of Hollywood Film Scores.
Fantástico video, de un fantástico compositor, las banda sonora de 'The great scape' o 'To Kill a Mockingbird' puede que sean mis favoritas, John Williams debería aprender un poco de Bernstein que siempre suena igual (se ha puesto en 'replay').
Great themes all. What a talent. I love the westerns the best, especially "The Sons of Katie Elder" and "The Magnificent Seven" those all amazing. Bernstein is one of my favorites. I've watched several of your tributes this morning. You've done an excellent job. Many kudos my friend. You timed this one perfectly. Thanks. (Credit to kimber1066 & cinemabon as I shamelessly plagiarized their posts, & they said it all!) 5+**********
NPR did a great story on him when he passed away. Still online, I think. Amazing composer. And speaking of music in movies, around Oscar time, NPR always runs a bit on the music nominated. It really opens my eyes to how influential music in a movie is.
Bernstein is one of my favorites. I've watched several of your tributes this morning. You've done an excellent job. Many kudos my friend. You timed this one perfectly. Thanks.
BERNSTEIN WROTE THE SCORE FOR AIRPLANE!!!!!!!! WOW. that's so cool! I didn't no he wrote the score for so many popular movies with great themes. I'm very surprised and am totally in love with his music now.
Nice compilation of music of my favorite composer of film scores. I suppose one cannot fit everything in from so vast a career, but I would liked to have seen the video end with my favorite Bernstiem composition, the haunting Taarna's Theme from "Heavy Metal."
How come everyone always forgets 1962's "Walk on the Wild Side". not only was it nominated for best song. It was also nominated for two Grammys as both best instumental theme and best performance by an orchestra. The Movie itself was a stinker but the opening Credits with that cat walking to the sound of the theme music was one of the best openings ever. Perhaps they should have cut the rest of the film then it might have been a classic.
Elmer Bernstein is my favorite composer for movies because each of his scores are different. None of them sounded the same like others. The jazzy score of Man With the GOlden Arm, the nostalgia of To Kill A Mockingbird, the whimsicality of Thoroughly Modern Millie, The Magnificent Seven (defied how westerns should be scored) and the gospel inspired Hallelujah Trail. Elmer Berstein was one of the greatest.
You opened with my FAVORITE score of all time by any composer! THANK YOU! Seems like this one is a tad neglected by some score enthusiasts lol but this one, The Ten Commandments, introduced me to film scores, along with The Secret of NIMH by Goldsmith. Thank you for posting!

Thumbs up if you also thought that 80% of the reason Airplane was funny was because of the soundtrack.

Stripes and Heavy Metal (both 1981) were fine too.
Always thought he did "Nightmare on Elm Street", but that was apparently Charles Bernstein (no relation to Elmer)
