Great Short Vid!! Thanks a bunch. I'm super new to Cameras and Photography... and having a blast with it. BUT, I'm taking pictures of a fish tank. Or more a Reef tank/aquarium with lots of deep colors (not deep water). The lighting is LED, and above the 10,000 Kelvin range. More so in the 15,000 - 20,000 if you will. My photos are as close as I can get, when setting the WB to 10K. Anything I can do, to better the photo and capture the color at it's most "BEST" setting?? lower contrast helps 2
can you tell me how i can restart or reset my setting back to its regular setting. because my camera keeps telling me i can't control my whiteblance because its can with my currently setting. Thank you
Jon, thanks for this great video. I assume I could do a WB adjustment of snow rather than a white page on a bright or cloudy day and get a proper adjustment for the current conditions?
You are right, We will try to slow it down on some of our new videos. People have such a short attention span in American, it was our way of trying to keep people from jumping to some other video. Non the less, we were too fast. Thanks- John
I've looked all over and this vid is the best. I have a nikon D700 and the way you walked through the steps it made it very easy for me. The reason I needed this was that I'm shooting a wedding tomorrow in a church with the funkiest of lighting (florescent incandescent and natural all in one setting.) This going to help tremendously .
I have a D90, 105 micro, and R1C1 Kit, and I`m a dentist, i`m having dificulties to set the white balance, and collors at my bucal pictures, how do I set the whit balance to this flash R1C1, I would like tho know what is the Kelvin temperature of this light of this flash?
I cannot understand what the point is in saving a custom white balance. If I save it in say D1 can I go back and use it some days later? Will the light not have changed?
@pjos111 New custom white balance is created whenever the lighting situation changes. The white balance can change the same day 5 times depending on the light. If you shoot in raw you can always go back and fix your white balance later.
@pjos111 It all depends on your preference. I personally prefer cloudy WB when shooting outdoor. It gives you a nice warm touch. My WB is mostly on cloudy except when the sun is setting because then the picture will get too yellowish/orangish. If you're not too sure which one to pick, go with auto and you could also choose the WB later in post processing. Most of the time the auto WB will not mess up.
Thank you. That makes sense. It certainly would be hard to remember exactly how the lighting looked after the fact. Thank you for your quick response.
Hi. Wonderfully informative video. I learned about features on my camera I didn't even know were there. One question, though. I have Photoshop and usually take all my pics in Raw format. With that in mind, is there an advantage to setting the WB when I shoot the image as opposed to adjusting it in PS? Is one as good as the other?
Glad you liked the video, thanks. I think they are as good as the other with one exception. If you are at the job and you take a test shot, you can compare it on the Lcd monitor to the actual scene to see how accurately the white balance is doing. When you go back in Photoshop, you won't have the original scene to compare it to. This may not be a big deal to some depending on the use and style of the photographer, but might frustrate others trying to get the colors accurate etc.
@jonvideo hi, quick question here. d-0, d-1, d-2, d-3, d-4 they all the same right? i can just use any slots to records the preset wb? cos u said d-1 is for images only?

Hi Jonvideo, i was trying to do the same thing with the PRE setting of WB in a white bond paper but i always have a no good result. are you in a full manual mode? or is there any particular distance in shooting the white bond paper to get this good result?
You shouldnt have in full manual mode. Is the lights your are white balancing under that lights that you are also shooting under? Sometimes if you only have the white paper as about 50% of your image when balancing, you may get a better color temp. Let me know if you try that.
Its a nice vid (apart from studio and music) although im judging more on content it would be cool if u guys showed some results whilst playing creatively with the WB
The music is terrible, yes, but it lasts about 15 seconds and has nothing to do with the quality of information or how it is presented. I appreciate this video as it has made the comprehensive WB controls of the D90 much more accessible to me.
10 secnds of listen to the crappy music that has been selected for this tutorial and I just know its going to suck. And even if it doesn't suck, witch I will never find out but doubt, since I emediately pressed pause to write this cuz Im so bored right now, it's impossible to listen to this crap so if there is any talking going on people are not going to hear it because they will all have turned their volume down.
Of course its crappy, It's the joke of it.- Retro hip. The boredom is not your fault. You grew up in a generation where parents didn't take the time to teach patience and were allowed to play videos games unlimited. It's about keeping the kid entertained every second. There is no tolerance for something you need patience for. Politeness was not taught. Good luck in this Depression with a job interview-they can sense contempt/ boredom, and may choose the next guy who gets the big picture
@jonvideo I don't believe you when you say you chose the music to be humourous or "retro hip". It just doesn't make sense. What are you a late overaged representative of the ironic genereation? I don't think so. So today I watched 20 seconds into the vid and and thankfully the music was tuned out but only to be replaced with a truly horrific studio set and a grungefan with a trimmed beard. Actually that beard kind of says it all. It looks like one of those dishonest, hypocrite religious beards.
Ok, you got me, I have bad taste in sets and music. True, I am a late overaged representative of the ironic generation and a happy one. I tried being something else, but it didn't get the response on youtube. Going to a horrific studio set music (my bad taste) and the trimmed beard guy, my friend Bob, got me over 3 million views on my site. Go look at the other similar youtube channels with the better sets and music, They don't have the hits or the adsense revenue. Tacky sells.
Go to my video that says "photography free teleprompter tips don't watch"
skip to 1:28 to see the worst set, a blue piece of paper and $20 plant in the corner. This was 1991 when I first got started. Bad tacky music in the beginning too so skip that part. This proves I'm really stuck in the past. I'm an old guy balding now, and glad to be alive, and very happy with kids and a wife, you will have your turn someday.
@jonvideo I found this video very useful. I don't ever think if the music replaced with something for 50 cent or the freaky MJ it would sound better. keep up the good work, I'll watch all of your videos here, and save them for my referance. cheers.
@imsencat - If you don't like the tutorials, go somewhere else. Put down the vidio game, get off your butt and go out and get a job in the real world. Stop being a cry baby. You are definitely a "me generation" loser.
@marinecorpscop shut up about ur f-ing videogames will you. i do that stuff im much too old to waste time on that. now put down the glue and go back to sleep
@imsencat Come on buddy. You are obviously a member of the "me" generation that needs constant reassurance that you are the best and everyone wins. If you don't like these tutorials, DON"T WATCH THEM. Other people, me included, find them informative and helpful. We can't help it that you are a spoiled brat that has grown up in the push button, instant gratification world. Grow up and take some of your ADHD medication. If you are worried about the music and the set design you need help.
@marinecorpscop No man. Yougot me all wrong. First of all It's not possible for me to be a part of the me generation even if I wanted to. Im 46 yrs old. Second It's about taste. If you post stuff that sucks onto here, people are goin to tell you it sucks. I think this sucks and is annoying and so trashy so Its my duty to let my thoughts out. If you like ugly stuff that sucks. Fine. I'd sure hate to see what your living room looks like -brrr.
Great tutorial, thank you. I take it the rest of the preset 1-4 are for images? and D-0 is for setting the white balance with a piece of paper? I've noticed other tutorial using a grey board rather than a white piece of paper. Why grey?
Would I be able to use the gray card if I have a filter already on my lens, for instance, a circular polarizer? Would it affect the white balance at all?
Gald you liked it. If you go to elitevideo com you can find out more on our 2 dvd set that covers this and a lot more. Glad you avoided the manuals. Please subscribe.
Excellent! I've been shooting more and more weddings and have struggled with white balance adjustments out of the camera. I also have a full-time job and I have two daughters (5 and 2), so time is - as you can imagine - a huge commodity. So, not having to mess with white balance/color in post-production is one area where I can realize a huge amount of time savings. I am MORE than excited to use the tips learned in this video. My daughters, wife and I can't thank you enough!
Thanks you so much for your instructional videos. I live in Lima, Peru. If you have not heard about it, I will not take it against you. An unfortunate characteristic of Lima is that it is overcast for six months a year. The sky/light type is "donkey's belly" color. I have a D90 and your instructional video has helped me a great deal. But I was wondering, if you had to take pictures in a sort of permanently deflected light like in Lima, how would you accomplish brighter or defined colors?
Yes, I know about Lima, but have not heard of its overcast qualities. To compensate I would try longer shutter speeds with tripod, 2. look into h d r software , also look into increasing the saturating of your colors in post production. I would also have some fake flowers, colored shirts and hats etc, in your bag of tricks to add boost to your pics when needed.
Can someone PLEASE help me? I am taking photos with tungsten light which is 1000 watts and I notice that the room and wall become **VERY** yellow. So I plan on adjusting the white balance manually. Question: Do I take a picture of the white card under an **IDEAL** environment (like outdoor but under soft sunligt) or do I photograph the white card in that "yellow" environment? Please help. Thank you.
@tttnytttny put the white balance card so it's lit by same "yellow" light (or whatever 'problem' light you have illuminating your scene.) Then take the photo of card lit by same light that's on your subject. When the camera 'figures out' a 'correct white balance' for the card illuminated by the 'weird light', it will also get the correction factor for that same light that's hitting your subject. you err if you do balance shot outdoors and then apply the correction to your 'weird light' scene.
@watermarko Sorry for this late reply. I adjusted the white balance but the pics were still kinda yellow. I guess I must have done something wrong. I used Photoshop but the pics would have been much better under white lights. Thanks again.
Thanks for the video. Very helpful. I have been having a hard time getting my WB correct when shooting inside (it is too blue, then too yellow). I tried doing the preset, but still having those issues. Any suggestions? Thank you!
I would suggest going into the manual white balance temp mode and start taking pictures at increments of 200k or more until you come to the color that looks best for that situation. This way you are not too blue or yellow.
I do not get the critics Jon, this is very helpful if you are new to shooting with PRE. I used it for the first time with strobes and this helped me do it. Not sure what the problem is with the trash-talkers that have nothing to add to life other than putting others down. Boo000 indeed.
Thanks. I think its a tough economy and a tough and confusing world these days. If feel if it gives people a boost to critique, in whatever way, then, I support them, even though I may disagree. There is a lot of pain people have directed in the wrong places. They just may not realize that being negative too much gives a very short lived boost. Thanks for your support.
Really good video, thanks! Thinking about ordering the videos.
I was wondering, does it matter if you use a white or a grey paper? Should it be a 50% grey or something? Is one better than the other? Can the camera see the difference automatically?
Jon Thanx for sharing... Dont mind for someone mocking ur video. At least u got intention helping people understanding their cameras better. Quality of teaching, video has no affect.. it depends on the person itself ^_^
I would have to agree with you. In this case I would recommend you get Magic Lantern disks. They do a really good job explaining what you need to know. They are a good company and get the information across in an easy to follow manner. We are pretty homemade and downhome, I agree. I would even agree with the boos because we mess up every now and then.
Sure Mike, I guess everyone is not going to like our style. I have been doing training videos like this since 1991 for a living and I figure I will let our samples speak for themselves. We have almost 2 million views, so I'm pretty happy with that. And we are still getting sales of our DVDs, so no complaints- I have my health back, (or close to it) I have a great wife and two wonderful boys 7 and 10 That is my success.
Sorry- Didn't mean to make you feel bad. I am interested though, Did you view both sets of disks before you made that comment.? If not I'd like to send your our disks no charge to view. I'd like your opinion after seeing both 90 minute disks. We are always striving to learn and that also means taking suggestions, even from our hardest critics. Sometimes you can judge the disks better from watching them instead of just a clip. Keep in touch -John
Have you used the four way controler to try to get that combination? What happen if you did? Also if this is your first slr, I would suggest getting the Nikon d90 made easy (where this video was taken from.) Its 2 dvds 90 minutes each and you can learn all that you need to learn about the camera in an easy to follow way.
It is most likely in low light and need more light or there is too much light in which case increase your shutter speed or reduce your iso then it should work.
thanks alot... it was low light. Just bought a D90 and have no clue about photography lol, just love nice looking pics, so i have been reading and watching videos for hours lol
do yourself a favor and buy the Magic Lantern dvd on the D90 from barnes and noble. very good book and multimedia set. then read a real photography book.
If not then it's not a problem, stop down your aperture or buy a neutral density filter and you're fine as far as exposure goes. I rarely have ever needed to shoot faster than 1/2500 in sunny Arizona.
If you really want the 1/8000th of a second shutter speed, you can always buy the Satechi grip off of Amazon, which adds that plus timelapse, extended multiple exposure, and quite a bit more (in addition to the normal extra battery and vertical shutter button/wheels).
It is a bit of both, we are trying to lead people to our website to get our D90 Made Easy two DVD set or just watch some of the free video sections here.
I ment it in a good way, the video is actually great, and I call everyone a studdering prick. Very informative and I played with white balance for an hour after this. Thanks.
Thankyou very muck for this

And even if it doesn't suck, witch I will never find out but doubt, since I emediately pressed pause to write this cuz Im so bored right now, it's impossible to listen to this crap so if there is any talking going on people are not going to hear it because they will all have turned their volume down.
imsencat 1 year ago
Of course its crappy, It's the joke of it.- Retro hip. The boredom is not your fault. You grew up in a generation where parents didn't take the time to teach patience and were allowed to play videos games unlimited. It's about keeping the kid entertained every second. There is no tolerance for something you need patience for. Politeness was not taught. Good luck in this Depression with a job interview-they can sense contempt/ boredom, and may choose the next guy who gets the big picture
jonvideo 1 year ago 2
@jonvideo I don't believe you when you say you chose the music to be humourous or "retro hip". It just doesn't make sense. What are you a late overaged representative of the ironic genereation? I don't think so. So today I watched 20 seconds into the vid and and thankfully the music was tuned out but only to be replaced with a truly horrific studio set and a grungefan with a trimmed beard. Actually that beard kind of says it all. It looks like one of those dishonest, hypocrite religious beards.
imsencat 1 year ago
Ok, you got me, I have bad taste in sets and music. True, I am a late overaged representative of the ironic generation and a happy one. I tried being something else, but it didn't get the response on youtube. Going to a horrific studio set music (my bad taste) and the trimmed beard guy, my friend Bob, got me over 3 million views on my site. Go look at the other similar youtube channels with the better sets and music, They don't have the hits or the adsense revenue. Tacky sells.
jonvideo 1 year ago
Hi imsencat, I think I agree with you,
Go to my video that says "photography free teleprompter tips don't watch"
skip to 1:28 to see the worst set, a blue piece of paper and $20 plant in the corner. This was 1991 when I first got started. Bad tacky music in the beginning too so skip that part. This proves I'm really stuck in the past. I'm an old guy balding now, and glad to be alive, and very happy with kids and a wife, you will have your turn someday.
jonvideo 1 year ago
@jonvideo I found this video very useful. I don't ever think if the music replaced with something for 50 cent or the freaky MJ it would sound better. keep up the good work, I'll watch all of your videos here, and save them for my referance. cheers.

@imsencat - If you don't like the tutorials, go somewhere else. Put down the vidio game, get off your butt and go out and get a job in the real world. Stop being a cry baby. You are definitely a "me generation" loser.
marinecorpscop 1 year ago
@marinecorpscop shut up about ur f-ing videogames will you. i do that stuff im much too old to waste time on that. now put down the glue and go back to sleep
imsencat 1 year ago
@imsencat Come on buddy. You are obviously a member of the "me" generation that needs constant reassurance that you are the best and everyone wins. If you don't like these tutorials, DON"T WATCH THEM. Other people, me included, find them informative and helpful. We can't help it that you are a spoiled brat that has grown up in the push button, instant gratification world. Grow up and take some of your ADHD medication. If you are worried about the music and the set design you need help.
marinecorpscop 1 year ago

Why grey?
trinhk 1 year ago
Would I be able to use the gray card if I have a filter already on my lens, for instance, a circular polarizer? Would it affect the white balance at all?

Awesome tutorial. I knew my D90 was capable of doing custom white balance, but I was frustrated that I didn't, until I watched this video.
Thanks a lot. You saved me so much time of reading through awfully boring manuals.

SocyQueen 1 year ago
Yes, I know about Lima, but have not heard of its overcast qualities. To compensate I would try longer shutter speeds with tripod, 2. look into h d r software , also look into increasing the saturating of your colors in post production. I would also have some fake flowers, colored shirts and hats etc, in your bag of tricks to add boost to your pics when needed.

Also A low f-stop lens more money but will soften the background, giving your subject more "pop" from the background. - John

what if I'm using an speedlight on the camera, Do i make sure the flash hits the white piece of paper??? please help.

You have to have it on while white balancing with white paper, because that is the light you will be using on your pictures.

marcuscarlberg 1 year ago
Can someone PLEASE help me? I am taking photos with tungsten light which is 1000 watts and I notice that the room and wall become **VERY** yellow. So I plan on adjusting the white balance manually. Question: Do I take a picture of the white card under an **IDEAL** environment (like outdoor but under soft sunligt) or do I photograph the white card in that "yellow" environment? Please help. Thank you.
tttnytttny 1 year ago
@tttnytttny put the white balance card so it's lit by same "yellow" light (or whatever 'problem' light you have illuminating your scene.) Then take the photo of card lit by same light that's on your subject. When the camera 'figures out' a 'correct white balance' for the card illuminated by the 'weird light', it will also get the correction factor for that same light that's hitting your subject. you err if you do balance shot outdoors and then apply the correction to your 'weird light' scene.
watermarko 1 year ago
@watermarko Sorry for this late reply. I adjusted the white balance but the pics were still kinda yellow. I guess I must have done something wrong. I used Photoshop but the pics would have been much better under white lights. Thanks again.

Thanks for the video. Very helpful. I have been having a hard time getting my WB correct when shooting inside (it is too blue, then too yellow). I tried doing the preset, but still having those issues. Any suggestions? Thank you!
blairtrabue 1 year ago
I would suggest going into the manual white balance temp mode and start taking pictures at increments of 200k or more until you come to the color that looks best for that situation. This way you are not too blue or yellow.
jonvideo 1 year ago
I do not get the critics Jon, this is very helpful if you are new to shooting with PRE. I used it for the first time with strobes and this helped me do it. Not sure what the problem is with the trash-talkers that have nothing to add to life other than putting others down. Boo000 indeed.
Yellowshock 1 year ago
Thanks. I think its a tough economy and a tough and confusing world these days. If feel if it gives people a boost to critique, in whatever way, then, I support them, even though I may disagree. There is a lot of pain people have directed in the wrong places. They just may not realize that being negative too much gives a very short lived boost. Thanks for your support.
jonvideo 1 year ago
Really good video, thanks! Thinking about ordering the videos.
I was wondering, does it matter if you use a white or a grey paper? Should it be a 50% grey or something? Is one better than the other? Can the camera see the difference automatically?

MAGIC LANTERN dvds are BETTER than this homemade dvd. boooooo!!
cruz1aviator 2 years ago
I would have to agree with you. In this case I would recommend you get Magic Lantern disks. They do a really good job explaining what you need to know. They are a good company and get the information across in an easy to follow manner. We are pretty homemade and downhome, I agree. I would even agree with the boos because we mess up every now and then.

Sure Mike, I guess everyone is not going to like our style. I have been doing training videos like this since 1991 for a living and I figure I will let our samples speak for themselves. We have almost 2 million views, so I'm pretty happy with that. And we are still getting sales of our DVDs, so no complaints- I have my health back, (or close to it) I have a great wife and two wonderful boys 7 and 10 That is my success.
jonvideo 2 years ago
thanks for making me feel bad about myself. it worked! your choice on how to react says a lot about you. good luck and godspeed!
cruz1aviator 2 years ago
Sorry- Didn't mean to make you feel bad. I am interested though, Did you view both sets of disks before you made that comment.? If not I'd like to send your our disks no charge to view. I'd like your opinion after seeing both 90 minute disks. We are always striving to learn and that also means taking suggestions, even from our hardest critics. Sometimes you can judge the disks better from watching them instead of just a clip. Keep in touch -John

When adjusting the white balance on the "Auto" white balance selection in the menu,
I am directed to the colour balance adjusting block.
When I am there, How do I go about getting "-1 red, +1 green and +3 blue"
What letters/numbers would I end up with in the "A-B" selection?
What letters/numbers would I end up with in the "G-M" selection?
Please help, its my first slr, and Im completely stuck
sabrina325 2 years ago
Have you used the four way controler to try to get that combination? What happen if you did? Also if this is your first slr, I would suggest getting the Nikon d90 made easy (where this video was taken from.) Its 2 dvds 90 minutes each and you can learn all that you need to learn about the camera in an easy to follow way.

walseth145 2 years ago
It is most likely in low light and need more light or there is too much light in which case increase your shutter speed or reduce your iso then it should work.

the shutter speed in other cameras is twice as fast.. should I worry about this?
miguel88ms99 2 years ago
Are you taking pictures of bullets in mid flight?
If not then it's not a problem, stop down your aperture or buy a neutral density filter and you're fine as far as exposure goes. I rarely have ever needed to shoot faster than 1/2500 in sunny Arizona.
Isonux 2 years ago
If you really want the 1/8000th of a second shutter speed, you can always buy the Satechi grip off of Amazon, which adds that plus timelapse, extended multiple exposure, and quite a bit more (in addition to the normal extra battery and vertical shutter button/wheels).

The white balance should be 90/10. The 10% are blacks to cook and clean for the 90% whites.
