  • YOU FUCKING ARSEHOLE

  • YOU PIECE OF FUKUYAMAIST SHIT!

  • Haha so taken out of context

  • the only thought that goes again and again in history is the belief that our epoch must be the last. It never is. And it comes from a twisted belief that we, whether in an individual or in a group fashion, must out-stand the rest. In a particular time in history, out-stand the rest of the world... at any time in history, out-stand the rest of the history. The only way to out-stand the rest of the history is by being the last bit of it, but we never are, Slavoj, we never are...

  • Zizek is basically saying that almost everyone today believes that more or less the status quo global liberal capitalist system will go on indefinitely into the future with minor changes. He's criticizing that view as utopian, the assumption being that the liberal democratic state as it exists today is the only(or best) possible political-economic system. Zizek's point is that not only can we do better, but we are going to have to.

  • Christ, he's like an athiest Father Ted, isn't he?

  • electric sheep just STAND OUT! :D

  • This man has joined the long line of economically illiterate philosophy professors. He is a testament to the arrogance and unfounded sense of superiority present in modern professors of non-subjects.

  • Zizek dont believe what you said. Fukuyama does.

  • @SacnothXIII

Zizek was explaining a belief held by many people in our liberal-democratic society (which is most of what he does).

  • @soadaw1 I was talking about the video description.

  • misrepresented? what's your aim with obstructing by placing words from a bigger context?

  • Is the visual of the video an electric sheep ? ... ;P

  • yes

  • Very cool ;)

  • you take one quote totally out of context and call that a video? What's the point?

  • "Anyone who actually knows anything about politics realizes that almost everyone is a libertarian.".........oh lord, another dummy ranting and raving about things they don't understand. great.

  • "The problem is, the dancing fools don't even understand that the song is about them."

-Matthew Caws, Nada surf, on the song Popular

You don't know the song is about you, either. Do you? What do you do about these issues other than type "shove it up your ass!" in comment boxes on the internet?

  • 1/5: For dishonorably misrepresenting Slavoj Zizek

  • 1 thumb down for not thinking about it, like the title beckons you to. T

    hink about it.

What does the contemporary west mean when it calls the communist world utopia? What does Zizek mean when he calls the west utopian? He sums up a large section of contemporary history in a very short space by really cutting to the heart with his analogy.

  • Never mind what the title beckons. I rather think about what Zizek actually did say then your personal deranged opinion of editing.

  • what exactly is the misrepresentation you are talking about? How have I misrepresented Zizek?

  • Sorry. If it wasn't your intention then I am glad you like to share Zizek online like this.

It just struck me as cutting off in a way that too easily lends for misinterpretation.

  • @denito9474 Zizek actually explains that the utopia of liberal democracy is pure ideology, it is based on socialized biases of reality, not that it is in fact the most apt form of governance or economic distribution. Your video puts fourth that liberal democracy is what we are looking for, which undoubtedly misconstrues his own notion.

  • @denito9474 america

  • agreed, this clip is way out of context

Zizek is merely introducing the milieu and is cut off before continuing his critique

  • I noticed more and more, from many aspects of my experiences from learning newest trends on internet. Key words: community, collabration, climate change, 2012doomsday, new age movement, new world order, reptalian conspiracy, iraq, obama... I try to figure out for myself why the world's so fundamentally wrong more and more. It seems the answer is getting more and more clear now. All things are pointing to one direction. History will change itself soon.

  • I think you are confused, history is repeating itself, as we speak...

Same disease, different names for the "symptoms"

We are response-able of change! Is in our hands, this is our time!

We can't wait for it, we need to act upon it!

  • This is abuse, man. Zizek thinks not like that.

Recording is continuing actually, but the clever editor cut the recording in very good moment... very clever.. :)

    Greetings...

  • koblen...go listen to his lectures a bit more. especially ecology as the new ideology - there at the beginning he spells out the fukuyamism*

  • could be, my friend! can you give me the link, pls?

..and the point is this recording shows zizek as a fukuyamaist, and that's not true. Maybe zizek has sympathy for "the end of history" thema, because it belongs to Hegel.

    Greetings..

  • I don't think this shows him as a "fukuyamaist." He is speaking to (and from) the position that utopian thinking is not the best way to do good in the world. Fukuyama would agree. But Zizek is pointing out to Fukuyama that saying the world is now basically global liberal capitalist is also utopian.

  • unless utopia as a new, NECESSARY architecture.

  • It only belongs to Hegel through Kojeve. And it only belongs to Kojeve through Fukuyama.

  • yes thats true in some way, shopping malls for example: they are simple little liberal kapitalist utopias...

i would like to hear full lecture, does anyone have it?

bowie byrne, i am an architect, do you know any sayings of zizek about architecture?

  • Comment removed

  • You might like Alain de Botton.

There is a Philosopher with a lot to say about Architecture.

    Search "Alain de Botton Architecture"

  • hello, 3 months later. The clip is from a documentary about the film 'Children of Men' I think it's called the possibility of hope.

  • All he's doing is defending socialism against it's detractors by pointing out that liberal democracy is obviously NOT the answer.

  • we are all Fukuyamists today..

  • Sorry, but is he saying that this is "Utopia"? "Social, Capital Utopia with Democracy?" Sorry, is this "Utopia"? it seems like Hell to me!!

  • It's utopian to think that liberal democracy represents the end of history

  • funny you just posted this. I bought "The Parallax View" yesterday.

  • I think the video is somewhat taken out of context. Zizek as far as I know is a Marxist, is he not?

  • A lacanian and a marxist I believe.

  • global liberal capitalism with democracy is a utopia? i'll have to go investigate what he has to say, i see a huge list of videos over there on the other side of the page ==================================>

  • He's not saying that it is an actual utopia. He's saying it's utopian to think that we have gotten it right with western liberal democracy.

  • hehe... I have lots of žižeks videos if you're interested..

  • postmodernism?

  • Beautiful!
