You do not hear bass because bass transducers need a baffle. The frequencies generated at the front of the woofer are cancelling out the frequencies of the rear of the woofer. This is why you always see one of three configurations: infinite-baffle (theoretical), enclosed (closed box), or bass-reflex (ported).

@MrTracevans you can also do tapered transmission lines like B&W, effectively eliminating the out of phase sound.
