@Chisumisfregginsexy So, you're accusing me of being backwards, ignorant, and outdated? All I did was post facts. If you don't have any facts of your own to refute what I said, then you're the one who's backwards, ignorant, and outdated. Btw, the term "outdated" is relative since trends, ideas, and fashions tend to repeat themselves every 20-50 years. Please elaborate what you mean.
George Wallace wasn't a racist. He was a segregationist. I smell niggerlovin' on the breath of this Yankee trying to immitate a Southern accent. The "Civil Rights" Movement was nothing more than a non-violent, communist revolution.
In all his praise of Bear Bryant, he forgets to mention that Bryant was in fact from Fordyce, Arkansas, a genteel south Arkansas town. And that, if it wasn't for World War II, in which he was drafted, he was almost sure to take over the head coaching position at the University of Arkansas.
being from jersey and being about as liberal as they come, I don't know what the hell to make of this song. Are DBT praising the three great alabama icons? Condemning? Just stating the facts?
@swohlforth stating facts, and showin more than one side of the story showin the good and the bad and that south is more than what You see on tv and movies.
@swohlforth No sarcasm or irony intended here. Being from the south, but (maybe?) somewhat educated... I'd say that Patterson Hood is laying out the complexities of a situation that is usually treated with reductivist one-liners. Especially the part about racism going way, way, way back. I look at this song like a mini-philosophy lecture... no answers given, but the field is fertilized for further investigation. ALl I know is, I've never tired of ths song, going on a decade.
@swohlforth you completely missed the meaning of it. DBT is showing that racism is no more common in the S. than it is in the N. in private, but some people see it as a political necessity to play off the race issue. Thus Wallace being a progressive until he lost an election to a segregationist. So he flips and becomes a segregationist to win. But later in life he revert back to his real view. They are trying to say that racism is dead as a practice but the idea lives on thus keeping it alive.
@mrjonseagull They are catering to a certin demographic. They know people like football, so sing a song about football and rednecks will love you. It's the same lame ass shit that a band like Oasis would pull. No one but english people consider that band "legendary", because they do the same thing the DBT do. People identify with things like Alabama football, and images like the union jack. A good marketer knows this kind of shit will bring in tons of money. These assholes are playing you all.
@danSARS hmm.. interesting theory. but there's not a lot of football references in the rest of their music. in fact, most of their music is about people in their lives and personal experiences. this album is an exception. it's a concept album about the south and, in particular, lynyrd skynyrd. if they're making tons of money, they are going about the wrong way by not allowing large chains (walmart, best buy, target) to sell their releases.
you fellow alabama artists need to stick together ;)
@mrjonseagull It's just that it reminds me of Daniel Moore or something. They know they will appeal to the jerks who live in alabama if they sing a song about football. It's obvious, and not challenging in any way.
@danSARS haha. i'm sure we are in agreeance that a roll tide song would be atrocious. i don't mind it in this context. it helps tell a good story, in my opinion.
@mrjonseagull Well this wound up being a fun argument. Congrats on making your points and also keeping your cool. Which is more than I can say for myself. You win, good Sir.
thank God ! nobody would've ever known about alabama if not for the mighty jason isbell and his true southern wisdom, certainly not me, I'm from waaaay up north---[- East Tennessee
Ok, I get it. I have lived in Alabama for over 13 years and have STRUGGLED to see another point of view. Yes, racism is everywhere.... I'm a military brat and have traveled a bit. However, Alabama floors the hell out me. I have met some awesome southerners, but you have to admit some of what the rest of the world believes is spot on!
To "bhos1994" : There is no Southern self-hatred in this song. Hood is commenting on the fact that so many people from the South are labeled as racist dickheads because of national media figures such George Wallace. If you think that the Truckers are full of Southern self-loathing, then you apparently don't know shit about them or their music.
This song is great until the last 20 seconds.....then it just gets dumb. "The devil is also a southerner", "He brews up some sweet tea for the arrival of the new guest." Right.....cause that's accurate. That's just plain gay and awkward to listen to. The singer also stutters 6:14, "an..and he became a pawn." However, the rest of the song is brilliant.
@olemisspike Congratulations! You just successfully warned the world that your are a snooty, negative-minded fault-hunter! Anything else you'd like to get off your chest? Maybe you're still holding that closet shut with your ten fingers and ten toes?
Why bother saying that "the rest of the song is brilliant" after blasting those two lines? That's like telling an artist that his dated signature in the corner of his masterpeice painting tainted the rest of his brilliant creation.
From North Alabama myself. I can agree with this song. I never appreciated this place til recently. Glad he pointed out that racism isn't what we're all about. In fact, it's the opposite. Rest in hell, Mr. Wallace.
@theredbonefury Wallace asked for forgiveness, and Black leaders forgave him...in fact, by the time he died, Wallace was anti-racist.....just thought you'd like to know....
@aurhys Yes they can, you just dont know where to look, its funny how you can listen to a song this powerful, then spew some ignorant stereotypical unjustifiable shit, exactly what this song is saying not to do.
