..or even a new OS. Also, even if people knew that linux is better, they don't care because windows already does what they want it to do or think it does what they want to do. That's why linux will never catch on. People don't have patience to learn codes to learn to get their iphone to sync with ubuntu. If another awesome device comes out in the future from apple only compatible with OSX, people don't want to spend MORE time trying to make it work with linux.
i agree with what you say about linux i have linux my own self i am a big fan of it its my favorite os but like u stated linux is just too complicated for the average user windows has everything done for you when u download stuff etc but also windows has bad problems with viruses but as long as u dont visit sites and download crap u dont know about u should be fine with windows and a good av
You see, at this point, part of the problem doesn't seem to lie in whether linux is better than windows or not. We know linux is better because it's a far more stable OS than windows and it's far smarter than windows because windows is stupid. But the problem is that most of the world know windows and programs associated with it. Most can't be bothered to spend hours and hours learning code and linux commands in their busy lives.
What the prob is it works better right now, but what if ur lovely wrk gets hit by a virus somewhere on ur network/computer you'd wish u had it somewhere else...u need to stop thinking about the front end...
ubuntu doesn't get viruses for the same reason mac doesn't, almost nobody uses mac or ubuntu, therefor there's no advantage to hacking, or sending viruses.
I agree with you, but some of these effects can be useful, such as window switching ones, taskbar previews, snapping windows etc. usually, the less obstructive and 'cool' effects are the ones that are the most useful. I just used the cube because it is the most recognizable part of compiz fusion but right now, it's deactivated. Which distro do you use? Have you tried xubuntu? It might not be as good with RAM as Slitaz, but it is pretty good with general tasks
Not really better but not bad. It's always wise to have a few different browsers installed in case one of them starts wigging out. Because of that, Opera is a nice back up that I highly recommend installing. I believe Google Chrome is or will be available for Linux so that may be a consideration also.
Opera is non-free, although it was originally developed specifically for Linux. I try to use free software wherever I can, and I'm sort of strict about it, because I use unbranded Firefox...
I use Opera because it supports Open standards, and making the web available to everyone. By complying and helping write tests such as acid 2 and acid 3, it has made firefox and ie much more compatible with web standards
Open Source software is what makes it more appealing. And, BTW, Windows is shit bro. No doubt about it. It is like a sick patient. Without any life support machines (like antivirus, firewalls, anti-spyware), it can't survive long. While, Ubuntu simply works out of the box. You won't even need a firewall. You can simply install and forget it. Not much maintenance too. Your "Actually Working" software Windows is what needs replacement, and here we have it, REALLY ACTUALLY WORKING OS.Think about it
Except you forget that there's a reason it's free. Because nobody would ever even consider paying money for it. The fact that you think that an OS that is free, yet still doesn't have one hundredth the amount of users as a $200 OS is better proves how gullible you are.
Things like that don't happen. People will always go for something that's free if it's better. And don't give me "people would use it if they knew about it" because everybody knows what Linux is, they just don't care.
Well, it seems to me that you are one of those persons who would buy a $200 "Trash" MiniCooper rather than accept a Free Ferrari. Doesn't matter.
What concerns me is the loopholes your $200 OS is full of.. If you would be a programmer like me, and knew what goes into the making of Windows, you would seriously consider Ubuntu. Microsoft is there to do business, not help people improve their life. It is us who have adapted to his OS and are "worried" about the change. Grow up buddy. Open your eyes
No see, it's more like you assume that the MiniCooper is trash and don't buy it because it costs money, and don't even seem to find a bit strange that not a single person is going for the Ferrari. Sounds like there might be a catch, huh? The catch is it doesn't work. It looks pretty as hell, but it doesn't work for shit.
I actually do a decent amount of programming, but that is irrelevant, because you don't need to be a programmer to know if something works.
Just one question, If you consider Linux trash, how come its running on some of the most powerful computers/super computers in the world, and not your $200 crap ? It simple. The programming, the processor scheduling, the memory handling, paging, kernel, device interface is far more superior than windows. And, please don't call yourself a programmer if you don't know these things. And I can't think of a retard who will run "Windows-programs-on-Linux". ROFL. you just really gave me a nice laugh.
Okay, I don't have the most powerful super computer in the world. If I did, maybe I would run Linux. As it is, Windows can handle my computer just fine.
And to reiterate, I never called myself a programmer, I just said I do a fair amount of programming.
And excuse me for trying to expand my program usage beyond the twelve native Linux apps.
Over the years there's been some programs that I've become reliant on, and as an editor I need something better than Cinelerra, which is junk.
And as for "opening my eyes" I'm not sure what else I can do, as I've used it multiple times for long periods of time with a completely objective perspective, and each time I come up with the same conclusion; it takes much more effort and time to do remedial tasks, and the hardware compatability is practically non-existent. Not to mention software, sure there's that WINE program, but it's god-awful. And without it you can't get any Windows apps to run. Kind of unacceptable for me.
You need Macultimate icons and two skins, leopard bsd and Mac4lin from gnome(dash)look(dot)org. Then customize your theme with Leopard bsd window border, Mac4lin buttons, Macultimate. and you're all set
I love Linux... it's just like first party ^^

The most common case of Firefox not working is installing addons. You can start Firefox without addons by:
firefox --safe-mode

True, that's a reason to like Opera developers, but not really their product. I might just be a free-software nut.
Clorow 2 years ago
See, that's the difference between you Linux users and everybody else.
You use software because it's Open Source, where we use software because it actually works.
Granted, Opera is an okay browser. I'm mostly just talking about Ubuntu.
