Don't defame the Fairbanks Morse engines. The old Trainmasters didn't smoke ANYTHING like this, and produced a huge amount of horsepower. Oh, and they started and ran clean.
65crewcabpw, it's not meant to defame F-M engines at all.
These big Russian units obviously aren't the old TrainMasters or other domestic Fairbanks-Morse locos of prior recollections, and any prime mover, no matter how well engineered, will run dirty if fuel, maintenance, and other operating factors aren't kept at optimal.
@pennsyr1 These slow-running diesel are probably made by Kolomna. The ex east german "Ludmillas" (DR 132, now DB 232) featured similar engines. They have since been reengined with Caterpillar products.
I love it, the crank breather dumps enough oil-ladened fumes to take care of the weeds forever. Our Alcos have can't compare to these jacked-up opposed pistoned billowing monsters.
Diesel, obviously no coal wagons are attached to the rear of the Locomotives.
It is important to remember this model(and variants) has not been in production for about 15 years, 10 years ago(and even today) many were operating without repairs, their equipment is frequently worn out. So when pushed to their limit they can create very much exhaust. Rebuilding them now is pointless, in the next decade they will be replaced.

Судя по сцепке состава и (если я не ошибаюсь) - то на видео запечетлён участок дороги со значсительным перепадом высоты ))) так что - коптилка вполне естественная
