wow This was completely painful, but kind of in an enjoyable way.haha It's definitely interesting to hear the 2 versions together. Both bands are very significant to music. A lot of bands - Nirvana included - held Sonic Youth to high regard. Sonic Youth may not be bigger, but they're very important to music in a different way. Both bands have done a lot.
They way I see it is both Sonic Youth and Nirvana are very important bands, if Nirvana never became buddies with Sonic Youth they would of never been signed to DGC and if they were never signed to DGC alternative music wouldn't of been pushed into the mainstream. Without Sonic Youth and Nirvana the world music would of have been very different.
Come on, Nirvana I don't think influenced Sonic Youth. And i found Nirvana kinda boring, yeah, they were important, but not in the same way as Sonic Youth..
You cant seriously mean that S Y were more influential than Nirvana? I like both, and Nirvana has a few S Yish noise solos, but apart from that (and a radiohead song) the SY style remain unique. Nirvana changed music.
Explain how Nirvana changed music? They were importnat at the time that they came, yes, but the music that they did was never as innovative, I was personally just never sold on Nirvana, and I do think in younger generations that the mystique of Kurt Cobain being dead is present.
I mean, I'm tired hearing about him now, there's always magazine articles advertised on the front cover - Kurt Cobain The Legend.
dude i agree, Nirvana didnt change music all that much, they simply present a type of music the mainstream refused to explore prior to that and so all of a sudden they are hailed as huge innovators and as having a sound that was completely original. BULLSHIT! even they didnt agree with that kind of praise. they were a really great band in my opinion though but bands like Husker Du and Black Flag had been playing music like theirs for years before that.
When Nirvana started out the music scene was still dominated by 80's metal bands. With Nirvana on MTV (Sellouts or not, whatever) peoples attention shifted towards alternative music and small grunge bands and a lot of the bands like Pearl Jam would've never been discovered if Nirvana hadn't served grunge to the average audience. And saying that they didn't influence contemporary bans is ignorant, IMHO.
@AlmigthyIsDead You say that "the music scene" was dominated. But your referring to bands like Nirvana, G n' R? I would say they were a type of pop music, there was still lots of important Indie Rock going on that was before this time, and after it. So maybe they changed the genre of biggest American Rockband slightly....? In the early 90's..?
@AlmigthyIsDead It doesn't matter if you think they're shitty! They were the biggest band in the world at one stage, and there was other, better stuff going on at the time. The "music scene" was dominated by metal?? When? I don't think that a few popular bands led to domination, and "the scene"? is just that, it's not anything, but an MTV selection, which aint worth a thing. And where did I say that Nirvana didn't influence contemporary bands, I didn't write that. I just asked who they are.
I fail? I'm just promoting the fact that sonic youth and nirvana were not competitors but more over two brilliant bands that took influence off eachother to make great music,
ok. doesnt change the fact that they didnt make a movie together.....im just saying.........and yes, they were 2 amazing bands. personally i like nirvana better bu thats only because sonic youth has gone a little soft since the 90s. after goo they went into a softer, more alternative type sound....then again i've only heard their main studio albums(my friend said they released all these other albums but idk what hes talkin about)
I like both, this isnt made to bring any of them down, i just felt like hearing them together. It's a bit out of pitch ofc but it still sounds very much S Y in my ears
