Alot of things is much older than america as a country:) like europe, asia and africa... Anyways im really looking forward to seeing it first hand. Its amazing
This tree is probably the most awesome (I know, I know, the word is over used, but this really IS awesome) thing I have ever seen. I sat on a bench about half a football field away, just looking up at it for about fifteen minutes with my jaw resting on my chest. It's ALIVE, and it's big enough to build hundreds of houses! Some stats: It's 36' in diameter at its base and 102' in circumference. Its lowest branches are 100' up, and it's top reaches 275 feet. It's as tall as a 27 story building!
Nice tree but the narative didnt teach me much. Im sure that America is considerably very young to this tree. I think we can all asume that by just taking one look at the tree, we see that it was here before this country was named. Just saying :)
I find it stupid that they call it the worlds largest tree. When obviosley we have not roamed the worlds entire wooded area's with a measuring tape. NOt trying to be a dick just saying.
General Sherman is one of the best examples there is to see what the largest coast redwoods were like pre-1900. The Crannell Creek Giant coast redwood was about 20% larger than this giant sequoia. There are photos of it online plus the recorded measurements. If fell about 1905. Before logging, the coast redwoods produced both the largest trees and the tallest trees.
@VcTaCerto ~ Aspen? Doubtful, even as a grove. Coast redwoods can be genetically identical too, having sprouted from roots of adjacent trees. A small grove of as few as 12 big clonal coast redwoods could easily surpass 47,000 stems of Utah's 'Pando' clone aspen. As a single tree, General Sherman is the top of the list with about 7 other giant sequia. Then a coast redwood Lost Monarch is next. So technically, Giant sequoia are not the largest trees in the world, but 7 or 8 of them are.
Ahp. Right you are in terms of wood volume, but not in mass it seems if underground biomass is considered and only one, say, General... However, is there much evidence towards the number of redwoods being identical in a grove, even if it is shown that they can re-sprout or sprout from roots of adjacent trees?
@ELtercermundista82 Yes, and the cartels are using them to hide narcotics production. When they're cut down, they'have no place to hide marijuana crtops.
si no enferman, son talados, les cae un rayo, estos arboles tranquilamente podrían existir eternamente, tambien radican problemas cn sus raíces, ya que estan muy expuestas
It is the largest because of girth. Also concerning roots: very interesting to note that the sequoia trees have relatively small root structures. Look it up...
The General Sherman Tree was first named the Karl Marx Tree by the Kaweah colony, a group of utopian socialists that were doing logging back in the 1880's in the area. When this was no longer allowed, the colony ended. If the tree could be renamed once, why can't it be renamed again? Sherman was one of the worst people in US history. As the world's biggest tree, it belongs to all the world and should be a symbol of peace, not named after a ruthless bigot. What name would you recommend?
Actually the tree is 3,000 years old, carbon dating puts it at around 3,200 years or so I believe. And yeah, America doesn't have much history as a joined country in itself, but who rules the world? ;D Your country would've been wiped off of the map by the Germans first, then the Russians, if it hadn't been for us.
