Has to be the best rendition of this aria! Corelli with a close 2nd but this man's voice is so fascinatingly brilliant, to have that depth and colour and still have huge ringing notes at the top end! It really is a one in a million voice! Brilliant orchestration also!! A day rarely goes by without this being played at least 10 times. I can only hope that people start to appreciate this largely unnoticed voice!!
Giacomini is in fine voice here. His rendition isn't the best, for me at least (I believe the two best Johnsons of whom we have recorded evidence -- remember, Caruso created the role, but never recorded anything from it -- were Del Monaco and Corelli, with Domingo in third place -- AND although the role was too heavy for Bjorling to sing onstage, his recordings of this aria are impressive), but it is still powerful and exciting --
He was in "great voice" at this performance! This is late in life for a tenor, he has warmth and power and this is just a beautiful performance! Probably the best of this aria!
@tabrizlioglan I admit Pavrotti is a great singer but I don't feel as much attachment to him as I do to Giacomini. I think in his voice one can some magical quality that can't be bought or taught. Primal, I would say.
I was fortunate enough to have tickets for Part II of the Metropolitan Opera Centennial in 1983 in which Giuseppe Giacomini brought the house down with this same aria. There has never been a tenor who could sing this aria as beautifully. It brings tears.
Emotion nearly paralyses me. What a voice! the low, baritonal notes, the incredibly ringing highs! Beppe was undoubtedly one of the greatest tenors of all time.
I have listened intently to Giacomo's earlier work here on youtube. It appears to me that he rose to an almost superhuman level of singing when he hit his fifties! Has anyone else felt this too? He is the best voice lesson you can find anywhere.
i´ve heard somewhere that Domingo was afraid of him and arranged that Giacomini never got as much publicity and attention of media as he would deserve. Please post as much from this Artist as you can if you have something with him. I would love to write why but i have no words....you feel it when you listen to him...............
IMPRESSIONANTE!!! SUPERLATIVO!!! IO NON HO PAROLE...... CHE POTENZA, CHE SMALTO, CHE "ROTONDITà", CHE ARMONICI!!!! COME TE NON C'è NESSUNO GIACOMINI!!!! :-)
Che meraviglioso ! Giacomini's huge voice is well controlled here and his legato and phrasing are flawless. And those ringing B flats give me goosebumps. Che peccato that he was not more appreciated here in the USA.Nowadays, with what we have,he would have been king of all the dramatic tenor roles at the Met for instance.Bravissimo Maestro Giacomini ! Tante grazie, tante grazie.
I don't think I have words to describe this performance accurately. I can, however, use words such as sublime, breathtaking, and exhilarating to approximate its effect.
Well, fuck. That's about as good as this gets.

@cookie2000ify Not Corelli? Nor Bjorling? What do you find superior in GG's performance? Not trying to argue; just curious:) --

@bassobari The one recording that opened my eyes(ears) was his cavalleria rusticana which was made in 1990. So I agree.

@yost112ty
Giacomini was born in 1940, so if the1994 recording date is correct, he was 54 when he recorded this.
Still, such a voice!!! Best "Ch'ella mi creda" I ever heard!

Even the greatest of tenors are weak in the lower phrases of this strangely written aria, constantly hovering around the low G flat.
But this tenor would put many a baritone to shame on these same notes of the scale.
In fact I thought I was hearing a baritone until he sailed up to that first ringing top B flat.
This is the ultimate in magnificence!
