This is just the most pleasant music I have experienced. They calmed me down as a teenager, and I questioned everything, but never their work.. For me, they are the greatest quartet ever.
It's almost a definition of synergy a quartet like this: each of them, with the exception of Bags (Milt Jackson) is underestimated (yes, even John Lewis who may be one of the finest jazz pianists of his age) and yet they consistently generate music that is transcendent. If I had to choose one group to take with me to the mythical desert island, I would have to struggle between MJQ and the Brubeck quartet. Were that life defined by such struggles.
I saw them in the sixties at the Blackhawk in San Francisco. It was great to see how they paid so close attention to one another during a performance. Extremely professional even then. They are unmatched,in a world of their own. I still love their music.
breathless, timeless, outstanding, so much feeling so much romance towards music.not even the best of wines would have been sipped with so much love. endless masterpeices.
IMHO, the MJQ has a claim to be the greatest jazz quartet ever. Four jazz greats who just clicked, where the whole was a great deal more than its incredible parts! It's just a rhythm section with vibes. What a rhythm section!! They turned themselves into a living breathing organism. Look at their faces. They're having a ball, even though they've played this countless times. Well rehearsed, but not OVERrehearsed. They're probably always surprising each other!!
@1948BigCy Great analogy -Noone can really , sound like this or play w/ this much interweaving and knowing as a Unit .Living Breathing Organism , Can't touch that ,It;s what it was.. great composers ....
Saw them 5 or 6 times, incomparable quartet. A must get for MJQ lovers is the 2 record set European Concert. The New Yorker said the only thig wrong with the album was that it was too perfect!
Love the camera work... Vibes gotta be the coolest instrument ever.
Chamber jazz at its finest. Performed appropriately on a concert hall stage. I could listen to this stuff all night. And never once ask myself where the horn player is.

Marvelous. John Lewis's syncopation are incredible, lyrical; when Milt's Jackson continuo keeps the line. Fusional.

The epitome of cool and class. Throw this on the car stereo and take a drive up highway one from San Simeon to Carmel sometime...
MJQ, Erroll Garner, Miles' Kind Of Bue...I don't think we'll see their ilk again any time soon.
