John, Paul, George and Ringo have all said any time they tried to hold a recording session while high on anything harder than pot the music came out shite and they'd have to start over, and that drugs were no more an influence on their writing than where they lived or what they ate for breakfast.

Drugs don't make for good musicians, but good musicians plus drugs is a helluva combination.
John Lennon really was on acid when he wrote that song. They were slipped lsd and while driving home the van looked like a yellow submarine. then when they finally arrived home he wrote the song (still tripping)
Metallica - Drinkin' and Drugging Thrashers, put out some good music. They sober up, clean up, blah blah blah, and they put out Saint Anger and a bunch of Radio Rock trash.
Dave Mustaine. The guy abuses drugs, gets kicked out of Metallica because of it, but puts out four Thrash masterpieces. He gets clean, Megadeth goes down hill, and he becomes a reborn Christian fucking pansy.
Motorhead - Lemmy and 'em have been doing drugs forever, and still rule to this day.
@ThazuaBlackarrow You really think that The System Has Failed, United Abominations, and Endgame are signs of Megadeth going downhill? Also, I love Motorhead, but their drugs have nothing to do with their good albums. It's the fact that they had a formula and have remained stuck, glued, and riveted to it for every album with little to no deviation. Compare that to Metallica during it's heyday. And Justice For All, Master of Puppets, and Ride the Lightning all have noticeable differences.
@ThazuaBlackarrow if you think that drugs help people produce, play, or perform music any better than they do when sober, you are a sad pathetic tool who has been sucessfully brainwashed by the media. Motorhead have the exact same sound that they had back in 1979, although i do agree that Metallica and Megadeth are rubbish now.
@elo333333333 So what if they sound the exact same? They still fucking rule. You don't fix something that ain't broke, and Motorhead doesn't need fixing.
How have I been brainwashed by the media? The mainstream world doesn't want people doing drugs. I don't see commercials saying "If you do drugs, you'll make great music like Motorhead!" I see commercials about how my brain will turn to scrambled eggs because DRUGS R BAHHHD, and I see more Charlie Sheen cases publicized to show how bad they are
@ThazuaBlackarrow You've been brainwashed because the media is responsible for creating the myth known as the "Rock n Roll lifestyle", which states drugs are an everyday part of a rockstar's life. Sex, Drugs and Rock n Roll. Who do you think invented that term? definetely not any artist.
So what? That documentary I watched about Motorhead.. Where they did cocaine, speed and drank more than any normal human being ON CAMERA.. What? Created by the media? I realize I keep coming back to Motorhead, that's because the only true Rock 'n' Roll band left, pretty much. That "media-created image", they've been living it long before the media created it. So have many bands. It's not a myth. It's very much a fact that's still very much true today
@ThazuaBlackarrow no band does drugs so that they can make good music, except for posers. They did drugs because they liked being high/drunk. The media used their hobbies to make dumbass like you think that drugs are what make a rockstar so you can buy their image. Thus, teenagers around the world start doin drugs in their freshman year thinking that they`re rockstars and "rebels". you`re fucking stupid. Wanna look at someone who abused drugs in a non-conformist way? look at Aleister Crowley
@elo333333333 Where did I say they do drugs to make good music? Good music is just a side-effect of the drug use. Of course they do drugs because they like the effects. So does everyone. And please. No one starts doing drugs because they want to be rockstars, this isn't the 80's, Rock's pretty much dead now that bands like Alter Bridge and Nickelback are considered Rock.
There still is no media-created image. "If you've got the beer, we've got the time! You got the coke, gimme a line!"
@ThazuaBlackarrow Nice logic, Bring Me The Horizon and Creed frequently smoke weed and they make the shittiest music known to mankind. Anyone who still chooses to do drugs knowing the damage it did on their idols is a fucking moron.
@elo333333333 Damage? What damage? Lemmy, MY idol, is still going strong and barely has anything wrong with him. Drugs only damage those who are stupid with them.
Weed is a little kid's drug, that's why. A lot different than speed, cocaine, and alcohol that is frequently used in the rocker/metalhead/punk crowd. It's like.. Ravers use E and other shitty drugs, and they make shitty music. Acid and all that goes with psychedelic/space rock. Drugs affect music, good drugs go with good music.
@ThazuaBlackarrow a lot of great songs have been writen while musicians where High. BUT some weren't like Dream On By Steven Tyler was written before he was even in Aerosmith and had the money to get wasted out of his mind
@ThazuaBlackarrow I'm pretty sure Megadeth's new albums are really fucking good. Of coruse he sucked dick back in Risk. But jesus christ Endgame was more than decent.
@stfwho LOL! You have to be perfect to like the Beatles? Ah no! Most Beatles fans grew up with them, and had it shoved down their throats as children.
@PeshwariNaan Drugs were not responsible for the Beatles great music. The Beatles were responsible for the Beatles great music. Perhaps some adult beverages and medications lifted their inhibitions a bit and allowed for just a bit more creativity.
@commanderdouche No, I don't think so. I have no idea what they took. Mushrooms, acid, pot? Listen, base your comments on INFO and FACTS. If I knew what they imbibed then I would have mentioned it. I play music well, only sober, but that isn't true for everyone.
@commanderdouche No, I do not know what rugs they did: mushrooms, pot, acid, cocaine? Listen, comment w/facts and information. I don't claim anything. It could have been positive, the effect whatever drugs they took or not. All I know is that the only Beatle to die directly as result from an addiction to drugs was George. I believe he smoked himself to death. There are great musicians who cannot function w/o caffeine. alcohol or nicotine.
@HaggenPagan26 No one needs to be a FAN-atic, but if you can't apprecate their harmonies, melodies and lyrics you are just plain one stupid mother fucker. You can't help it. it is a genetic thing.
@HaggenPagan26 I wo't let you get away w/that because you don't know what a troll is or what good music is. You wrote something stupid to get a reaction when the Bill Hicks is not really talking about the Beatles. That is trolling. He is talking about controlled substances. I've written plenty here and am never wasting my time trolling, fuck head.
@eqsmooth What an intolerant prick you are. I state an opinion, so now you think you can take apart my character and assume that my musical taste is bad. You are incredibly pretentious and you sound like a Charlatan.
@HaggenPagan26 I am condescending, NOT pretentious and absolutely correct most of the time. BTW, charlatan is never capitalized unless someone takes it as a name. you should look up the meaning of the word. You not only misspelled it, you used it inappropriately. You're the prick.
The saddest people i ever see are those who do lots of drugs because they think it somehow makes them more like lennon or harrison or mcartney etc. Meanwhile they are only wannabees with messed up minds who live in their own fantasy world
Ay viletree are you sure the beatles suck? Kuz im pretty sure one of the band members fucked your mother like a filthy whore when she was young n hip. Ha
@viletree Alright, make like Kurt Cobain, put a fucking shotgun to your skull, and pull the trigger you idiot. You are a waste of human life, and deserves to die. Don't keep reading this comment, no go on... What the fuck are you waiting on? Fucking do it already!
@lukeobrien02 You're right. Ringo only sang lead vocals on 'Yellow Submarine'. He did write 'Octopus's Garden', so maybe Bill just got his aquatic themed Beatles songs mixed up.
@dave8594 Why don't you stop acting like you're above everybody by being a mediator of arguments and not look at the comments, (in your words) shut the fuck up and watch the video?
He's totally correct in probably a very high percentage of artists, who can be exposed to what is available and not try something?, Marie and Donny Osmond?
@nso1256 there is a balance to it all man...you can't just over glorify drugs, especially the ones that turn you into a junkie....look at Jim Carrol, His poetry and music wouldn't have existed if he wouldn't have recovered and made it out of the 'gutter'
Meh, drugs don't make you creative. If drugs will make you a successfull artist, explain all those junkies dying in the gutter. Also, example: Frank Zappa was famously opposed to drugs and he wrote some of the best, weirdest and most difficult and innovative music of the last 50 or 60 years (at least). AND he was funnier than Bill Hicks. The whole drugs = creativity shtick is just a convenient bullshit story for people who really just wanna get wasted.
@MassExtinctionEvent Please read a book. Psychedelics literally open your mind. Take LSD once and your life will change when you find yourself realizing things about life you couldn't quite realize before. Drugs might not be the thing that separates the bums from the rockstars, but damn it sure helps. Its no coincidence most of our greatest artists were drug users. The Beatles were not "overrated", they made some incredible revolutionary sound in their second half and they changed the world.
@stfwho Just to offer a counterpoint somewhat...John Lennon said that drugs allowed him to focus on writing his music, but the drugs themselves ...according to him...were not exactly the catalyst...
@MassExtinctionEvent Have you listened to any Beatles songs not from their first several albums? Whether you like them or not, your ears would have to be broken to compare the music from Abbey Road/Sgt. Pepper's with a boy band. Frank Zappa is also great, though.
As someone who doesn't like smoking weed much, there has literally never been a single weed "junkie dying in the gutter." You can't become physically addicted to weed. Comparing it with opiates is absurd.
@Massiveshithead So wrong, so uneducated. ZAPPA was the biggest nicotine addict ever. He died from CANCER. HE CHAMPIONED SMOKING AND OPPOSED ANTI-TOBACCO ADVERTISING. If you think he didn't use cigarettes & coffee to write that incredibly sophisticated music you are deluded.
Beatles an over rated boy band? Are you trollin' for a Mississippi Beat Down? Music from the 70's on up would not be what it is w/o them. Greatest pop band ever. Under rated. WTF? Who dropped you on your head? Fuckin' shit!
"but how much better might it have been if they were not stoned" - Says who? You're speculating, that doesn't prove anything. Its just as easy to say "think how bad they would have been if they hadn't taken drugs". The fact is that they took drugs right the way through their time as a band, and they're generally considered to be the best band that ever existed. So how much "better" do you think they could have been? And Band on The Run is a critically acclaimed, great album
@suziecreamchease - Two completely inane and irrelevant analogies there. Im not confusing cause and effect because I have never said that Drugs result in creativity with anyone. Just as I have not denied they can be a destructive force as well as a creative one. Nice strawman though.
Artists draw from their experiences - good and bad. And drugs have always provided the most surreal experiences. This has been true from Coleridge and Keats, to John Lennon and Brain Wilson.
The difference between artists and those who "waste their life", is that they have the ability to interpret these experiences into something creative. Often the more intense an experience, the more significant the result. The same is true of other experience of the human condition - love, loss etc.
Again, artists take the inspirations from various places, and not always good ones. So who are you to say for definate Polanski would be exactly the same film maker had he not slept with young girls?
all i would say is once an experience becomes a habit, it is no longer a new experience but an alternative to being fully alive.. and unfortunately that is the case today with most people who take chemical amusements.. and seems to have become the case of too many artists who have used them in the past.
@MrSyrett If he has to sleep with little girls to make his movies, he's not the greatest film maker of all time. He's a piece of shit. I say the same thing about Edgar Allan Poe, if he needed the drugs to write his stories, he's by far not even one of the greatest. Lovecraft managed to do it without drugs.
Looking at Hick's words carefully, drugs CAN do some good things. Can. Just like, you can hit the lottery. You can catch a fish. You can kill a bear with a knife.
well yes .. goes without saying an opinion about the quality of a film director is an opinion..
In my case an honest opinion based largely on my observationsand thoughts.. rather than entirely a consideration of whether any other number of film critics would say the same.
Please explain what it is meant by "coffee table quality" i think when putting forward an argument it is more important to use logic ra
John, Paul, George and Ringo have all said any time they tried to hold a recording session while high on anything harder than pot the music came out shite and they'd have to start over, and that drugs were no more an influence on their writing than where they lived or what they ate for breakfast.

John Lennon really was on acid when he wrote that song. They were slipped lsd and while driving home the van looked like a yellow submarine. then when they finally arrived home he wrote the song (still tripping)

@peskar218 WRONG! Paul McCartney wrote it.

This man speaks the truth.

Motorhead have the exact same sound that they had back in 1979, although i do agree that Metallica and Megadeth are rubbish now.
elo333333333 4 months ago
@elo333333333 So what if they sound the exact same? They still fucking rule. You don't fix something that ain't broke, and Motorhead doesn't need fixing.
How have I been brainwashed by the media? The mainstream world doesn't want people doing drugs. I don't see commercials saying "If you do drugs, you'll make great music like Motorhead!" I see commercials about how my brain will turn to scrambled eggs because DRUGS R BAHHHD, and I see more Charlie Sheen cases publicized to show how bad they are
ThazuaBlackarrow 4 months ago
@ThazuaBlackarrow You've been brainwashed because the media is responsible for creating the myth known as the "Rock n Roll lifestyle", which states drugs are an everyday part of a rockstar's life. Sex, Drugs and Rock n Roll. Who do you think invented that term? definetely not any artist.
elo333333333 4 months ago
@elo333333333 Hahaha "myth"

Wanna look at someone who abused drugs in a non-conformist way? look at Aleister Crowley
elo333333333 4 months ago
@elo333333333 Where did I say they do drugs to make good music? Good music is just a side-effect of the drug use. Of course they do drugs because they like the effects. So does everyone. And please. No one starts doing drugs because they want to be rockstars, this isn't the 80's, Rock's pretty much dead now that bands like Alter Bridge and Nickelback are considered Rock.
There still is no media-created image. "If you've got the beer, we've got the time! You got the coke, gimme a line!"
ThazuaBlackarrow 4 months ago
@ThazuaBlackarrow Nice logic, Bring Me The Horizon and Creed frequently smoke weed and they make the shittiest music known to mankind. Anyone who still chooses to do drugs knowing the damage it did on their idols is a fucking moron.
elo333333333 4 months ago
@elo333333333 Damage? What damage? Lemmy, MY idol, is still going strong and barely has anything wrong with him. Drugs only damage those who are stupid with them.
Weed is a little kid's drug, that's why. A lot different than speed, cocaine, and alcohol that is frequently used in the rocker/metalhead/punk crowd. It's like.. Ravers use E and other shitty drugs, and they make shitty music. Acid and all that goes with psychedelic/space rock. Drugs affect music, good drugs go with good music.

@commanderdouche No, I do not know what rugs they did: mushrooms, pot, acid, cocaine? Listen, comment w/facts and information. I don't claim anything. I believe he smoked himself to death. There are great musicians who cannot function w/o caffeine. alcohol or nicotine.

ack303 9 months ago
Meh, drugs don't make you creative. If drugs will make you a successfull artist, explain all those junkies dying in the gutter. Also, example: Frank Zappa was famously opposed to drugs and he wrote some of the best, weirdest and most difficult and innovative music of the last 50 or 60 years (at least). AND he was funnier than Bill Hicks. The whole drugs = creativity shtick is just a convenient bullshit story for people who really just wanna get wasted.
PS: The Beatles? Hugely overrated boyband.
MassExtinctionEvent 10 months ago
@MassExtinctionEvent Please read a book. Psychedelics literally open your mind. Take LSD once and your life will change when you find yourself realizing things about life you couldn't quite realize before. Drugs might not be the thing that separates the bums from the rockstars, but damn it sure helps. Its no coincidence most of our greatest artists were drug users. The Beatles were not "overrated", they made some incredible revolutionary sound in their second half and they changed the world.
stfwho 9 months ago
@stfwho Just to offer a counterpoint somewhat...John Lennon said that drugs allowed him to focus on writing his music, but the drugs themselves ...according to him...were not exactly the catalyst...
ack303 9 months ago
@ack303 John Lennon made a lot of great quotes, I read a new one so often its surprising
stfwho 9 months ago
@MassExtinctionEvent Have you listened to any Beatles songs not from their first several albums? Whether you like them or not, your ears would have to be broken to compare the music from Abbey Road/Sgt. Pepper's with a boy band. Frank Zappa is also great, though.
As someone who doesn't like smoking weed much, there has literally never been a single weed "junkie dying in the gutter." You can't become physically addicted to weed. Comparing it with opiates is absurd.
BenkaiDebussy 9 months ago
Fuckin' shit!

suziecreamchease 11 months ago
"but how much better might it have been if they were not stoned" - Says who? You're speculating, that doesn't prove anything. Its just as easy to say "think how bad they would have been if they hadn't taken drugs". The fact is that they took drugs right the way through their time as a band, and they're generally considered to be the best band that ever existed. So how much "better" do you think they could have been? And Band on The Run is a critically acclaimed, great album
MrSyrett 10 months ago
@MrSyrett
Roman Polanski is the greatest film director of all time but could still have managed that without taking young girls to bed.
People in hospital are much more likely to die in the near future than those driving fast cars at speed without a seat belt.
Please do not confuse cause and effect.. or just things that happen to happen at the same time.
It is more than just speculation to say that people who habitualy put strange chemicals into their minds might end up wasting their lives
suziecreamchease 10 months ago
@suziecreamchease - Two completely inane and irrelevant analogies there. Im not confusing cause and effect because I have never said that Drugs result in creativity with anyone. Just as I have not denied they can be a destructive force as well as a creative one. Nice strawman though.
Artists draw from their experiences - good and bad. And drugs have always provided the most surreal experiences. This has been true from Coleridge and Keats, to John Lennon and Brain Wilson.
MrSyrett 10 months ago
The difference between artists and those who "waste their life", is that they have the ability to interpret these experiences into something creative. Often the more intense an experience, the more significant the result. The same is true of other experience of the human condition - love, loss etc.
Again, artists take the inspirations from various places, and not always good ones. So who are you to say for definate Polanski would be exactly the same film maker had he not slept with young girls?
MrSyrett 10 months ago
@MrSyrett
seems like we are in agreement..
all i would say is once an experience becomes a habit, it is no longer a new experience but an alternative to being fully alive.. and unfortunately that is the case today with most people who take chemical amusements.. and seems to have become the case of too many artists who have used them in the past.
suziecreamchease 10 months ago
