sorry. I could say the title should be changed, most of the photos are 1920s to 1940s, only some are 50s. HK in 1960s was in fact a very modern actually, fully industrialised, with many cars and buses, and traffic jams, only a few richshaw remained, and the tallest building was already more than 30 storeys.
Thats why the govt needed to start building the Cross Harbor Tunnel and planning to build the subway system in 60s.
Those days we took for granted the tranquility, the carefree strolling on the streets where there was not much traffic even on main streets like Queen's Road Central apart from buses passing by once in a while and so did trams along Queensway . Life was so at ease....those days will never be back...
When the old Kowloon Station was demolished in the mid-1970s the Government was forced to keep the tower because of the public outcry. So it is still a landmark near the Star Ferry.
When I arrived in HK from England it was 1972 and I was 30. Some of these scenes are before my time (I stayed 12 years) but some buildings were there. HK Club, the old Post Office, the three great banks, including the old Bank of China Building which still stands although now used differently. I bought a car from a man who was leaving HK and I often drove along the quiet road to Repulse Bay for an evening drink at the Drift Inn - run by Dairy Farm, I think. Even as late as 1972, HK was magical.
I grew up in HKG in the 50's and early 60's. I left HKG for America and live here since. I love HKG so much that I return every year for the past 10 years and I went back to my old residence but all have been changed. I lost my old friends. Anyone can suggest to me how I can locate these people may be a great help to me.
Thank you very much for your reply. Unfortunately, the high school I went to has since closed. My real friends were my neighborhood and now all have been changed. That's what I want to locate whereabout are these people.
Come to count about the years I left, it has been more than 40 years. Wow, how time fly and the video is just wonderful for memories bring back. Any other suggestion to locate my lost neighborhood ?
(1) Ask HKSAR Govt. for ideas. (2) Facebook (used by the young), (3) maybe an old & new photo of yourself, and submit it to HK newspapers (SCMP, Sing Tao, etc?) seeking anyone who used to go to your old school?
How do you ask HKSAR gov ? I did put an ad in Sing Tao for 10 days but no answer. To put one's picture in the newspaper is rather too much, I think. Anyway I thank you for your suggestion. I am still looking possible ways.
I born in 60's, that was really the time I had passed. The streets in Western District, the school that I had studied St. Louis School, given me very very deep feeling, hard to express in words!

It seems that some of the photos were before the war. The photos cover several decades.

One way of locating old friends is to sign up your school alumni association. I reconnect with five former classmates this way.
I left HK forty years ago and never look back. My memory of HK is still in 1960s and I like the way it was.
You tube "Hong Kong in the 1950s" has scenes ]of Mary Hospital and Western District. Good music too.

The background music of As time goes by (似水流年) is perfectly added that made it more touching!

My favourite novel is James Clavell's "Noble House".
I went to Hong Kong just because of it, and your video clip really puts me in the right feel of the time.
I have been to Hong Kong twice, and will most likely return.
