  • What gave justice to the monologue is the back ground score, Totally awesome!

  • This scene makes you wonder why such a great actor like Ben Kingsley nowadays stars in Uwe Boll movies.

  • Acting is all about the transitions and the transition at 2:15 is outstanding. This is why Kingsley is my favorite.

  • I love this scene; the movie is so intricately constructed it's impossible to know for certain whether he's confessing because he's guilty or because he's an innocent man being threatened by a deranged woman.

  • @spngdck What the hell are you talking about? He was beaten, threatened with a gun, tied up, gagged, dehydrated, suffering from a hangover, had his dignity taken away when he needed to piss. Are you saying that does not hurt?

  • @Rachamacha no actually he confessed to things he wasn't supposed to know if it really wasn't him who raped her, like when he said "I would let my pants fall so you could hear what I was doing", she only said that to her husband, so he couldn't have known it if he was really innocent.

  • I don't think that confession was real. He would have confessed much earlier if he really was guilty to avoid the torture.

  • i never thought i would see gandhi eat the underwear of an alien survivor lol

    seriously.

what a great thriller, but i think we can give another interpretation for the end.

  • Fantastic, I have to play this role soon, going to be tough.

  • Really good acting and story.

  • haha the big bandage on his head

    also, LOVE signourney

  • This movie is wonderful.

  • You can't compare Polanski to the character. The 13 year old "girl" looked like a woman and pretended to be an adult. She was a model. He didn't take her from a playground. She didn't physically resist Polanski's advances. The prosecutor and Polanski agreed that the conviction should be for having sex with a minor and not rape. He did do some time in a maximum security jail for it and paid restitution to the girl. He made a mistake. Polanski is not a predator.

  • This movie is wonderful... There is no other world.

  • Freedom to Roman Polanski!

  • polanski understands about running from your past and understands that a man is more than the worst thing he has ever done.

  • I heard this movie is based in a story about pinochet dictatorship

  • Kingsley is one of my favorite actors. I couldn't think straight after watching this.

  • did the director really rape a 13 year old girl ?

  • @ilovesexilovenaked polanski ? yes, he did. that´s why he can´t return to the united states ...

  • Wow. The irony.

  • I s till believe the evil shit should of been pushed over the edge! But I "suppose" she had to prove some humanitarian point..bleh! I would of pushed him and laughed as he fell! muh ah aha ha ha !

  • @he11kat it is not about revenge but about redemption. she's lived with it so long, she no longer needs vengeance but a closure. She has another live to go on... to kill would not be her true nature. if she killed, she would start over again with other nightmares.

what a great revelation after so many years that your main abuser confesses, so you can let go forever. more than you need (not want).

  • @spanishprisoner I still would of pushed him LoL

  • Why are they doing this to poor Ghandi?

  • kingsley really deserved the academy "door prize" for this. one of the great performances. i think polanski's most human and moving film.

  • Wonderful movie...

It was shot in northwest Spain, just in a beautiful place called 'DEATH COAST'.

    Polanski is a Genius.

    abbracci,

    eu

  • Is this Polanski's confession too?

  • Is this Manson's confession too?

  • What it takes to set a victim's soul to rest...

It's not revenge, it's not payback, it's just a confession to be made.

  • What I love about this is that by this point, it no longer matters if this is a real confession or not

  • @screwball82 yes, because in movies like this, where you drive one person to the end of their rope, you wanna simply forget. some do and some don't.

  • unbelievabe, just the most genuine confession act, gives u chills, almsot makes u cry, just the music and everything..ugh wow

  • Best part of the movie. Never saw it coming.

  • did you huys see the part where she takes his car? Incredible I'd say. I can't believe she did that.

  • Comment removed

  • Does anyone else miss the part where he would say tha anyone in his place would behave like him? That it's human nature? Or was it better to leave it unspoken, so that the audience comes to that conclusion by itself?

  • I believe it's talking about the power of influence of authority (Nazi Germany??) Not that's it's necessarily in our nature, but that it is our nature to be able to be broken.

  • wonderful work. I didn't much care for wilson's acting, though.

  • Does anybody know where I can find the whole movie?

Alguíen tiene und idea donde, podría encontrar toda la película!!?

  • I have no idea. I wouldn't waste my money on it. I saw it on IFC the other night. It was a good movie until the end. I personally didn't like the ending. I'm sure you can order the movie online.

  • Unbelievable and overwhelming piece of acting, truly unbelievable.

  • It was very controversial and emotional movie. We should forget about politics. I just wanna admit brilliant Sigourney Weaver's acting in this movie

  • Why was it controversial?

And how could we forget about politics--the entire play is about politics? It's easy enough to say "let's forget about torture" if you weren't tortured, nor anyone you know.

  • ah sry , did not watch it till the end , now I know where is her husband ^^

    :/

  • what happened to her husband ???????

and uah I fucking hate this disgusting man who has raped her ! hijo de puta.

  • Roman Polanski- great man and a great movie. He deserved a time life oscar.

  • One of my all time favorite films... But you should put a spoiler alert before this!!!!

You could ruin the film for some people!!!

  • Damn good film!

  • i love this movie and Sigourney

did you know that Glenn Close once played the role that Sigourney played (but Glenn played it on the stage) LOVE GLENN CLOSE

  • Diane Wiest was supposedly the best.

  • The acting isn't very good. The actors speak in sing-song voices, as if they're tired of the material. Odd for Ben Kingsley.

  • that is probably the need to allow the possibility that he has memorized and then regurgitated this information..

  • i'm guessing you like "Dude Where's My Car" more than this?

  • Let's see your masterpiece? If you think this movie has bad acting I imagine you won't show your fat face on youtube for centuries.

  • You better go back to baiting the boys with your tee-shirt fixation, queenie. Maybe you can cry while you soothe yourself with video games. That's probably why you can't tell the actors in this scene are flat and the direction is careless.

  • You sure like to look at me ripping my shirt off. If you want I can send you the DVD version. As for the acting, all the film critics thought it was good acting. I doubt the one opinion of some internet moron is going to stand up to that.

  • You really need people like Roger Ebert to tell you what you like? Well, no wonder you ended up some tee-shirt queer whose little ego is sooo fragile. See ya.

  • I said "all the film critics." You see in school they teach you what plural means. I guess you never had that opportunity to find out. All film critics like this movie, not just Roger Ebert. I guess you really like my tee-shirt rip. I'm glad I have a fan base from doing it. Thanks.

  • i saw this movie on one of the movie channels years ago... this is one that sticks with you, especially that last scene at the opera. this whole movie was a trip!

  • A remarkable movie from a Master psychologist director R.Polanski. From S.Weaver it was just a breathtaking performance !

  • what a wonderful movie this is!!

  • I always thought it was sad at the end when they see Ben and his wife at the opera. He confessed and yet Sigourney and her husband still look so unhappy and lost as they sit across from them.

  • fascinating to see Gandhi in this role, as it were.

  • How could a film starring the lead actors of Alien and Gandhi be anything but superb

  • Death and the maiden wasn't a book, it was a play!!!

I'm playing paulina at the moment, and i have to say i favour the play script, just don't think paulina would use the word 'cock'.

But sigourney is nethertheless good at her part!

  • Brilliant movie! For me Sigourney and Ben's best performances! Love the originality of the ironic scene when Sigourney's character shut Ben's one up with her own panties!Powerful and full of symbolism!

  • who wrote this monologue? cause it isnt part of the original script of death and the maiden...

  • Wasn't the film actually adapted by Ariel Dorfman?

  • @Exeunt26 No, Roman Polanski adapted the play or used it as the basis of the film, which is stated in most synopses of the movie. The play was published in 1990 I believe, and the movie came out in 1994.

  • yeah people bitch about Ben Kingsley but you just watch a scene like this and have to shut up. the guy is too good. And yes I think this was Sigourney Weavers best performance.

  • For all people mock Kingsley's airs and graces, he's a powerful actor. Sadly this film isn't on DVD in the UK: a shame, because it's also Sigourney Weaver's strongest performance ever.

  • The beginning of the music piece is the best :)

And about the film, it's just great. Ben rules.

  • "Morbid curiosity"... this is one of the best monologues in history of cinema. Kingsley delivered it!

  • very sad story!!

the film is good, but the music is even better!

  • I like this movie a lot and recommend it fully. The book is also very good. Curiously I hear that the stage version in the US played for comedy - not quite sure how they did that. Thanks for the clip!

  • I love this movie.
