@zcbensel Lmao, first of all the 85 is the hottest, bassiest and smoothest of all emg pickups, and the emg 60 is the brightest and cleanest, also the 85 is an alnico v magnet and the emg 60 is ceramic.
@robosvideos Oh no it is not acoustic BUT the recording mic er phone is close to the guitar and picking up the "acoustic sound" especially the pick itself making this no representation of the sound of the pickup. I have intentionally recorded this way to get certain sounds even close miking a solid body . BTW Stairway is a mid 60's Fender 12 string with split pickups. Coincidentally the Emg 60 is internally a split pickup. 1 coil fool low 3 strings one coil for high 3 strings.
In all honesty, I've tried out about 20 different pairs of EMGs in the same guitar and they sound good, but if you want REALLY good tone, go with a pair of Bare Knuckle Pickups. Bare Knuckles are about 40 dollars more but they are ridiculously better.
@CutByAngels It depens: to me it's in the bridge, but some argue that it has a too agressive sound, and prefer the 85. It depends on the style you play. It's awesome in metal, but if U play rock and hard rock, choose the 85 in the bridge.
However, in the neck, the emg 81 seems awesome, as you have less noise than with any other pickup. It's what I red in a forum. I hope I could answer your question. I've just bought an emg 81 in the bridge.
Engl!!! I own the Savage 120 - works perfectly with EMGs. I also tried Fireball, Powerball and Blackmore - all very good amps. It also depends on the Sound you want and the speakers you use. A cabinet with Celection V30s or Eminence Governors should be perfect for Engl heads + EMG equipped guitars.
We are using a combo of set ups Some guitars are loaded with the81/ 81 Combo some are60/ 81.The EMG60 ,in the neck position. set up affords us a good clean sound but would slightly compromise the lead tone . Now we have gone to a 3 channelKH120 Randall amp we can use the lead channel to get a good lead sound while retaining the EMG60 .However we do use the60 / 81 loaded guitars mainly for songs that have significant clean parts such as "The Day That Never Comes" from Death Magnetic" Justin Crew
yeah but he is playing an acoustic guitar, you cant make and electric guitar sound exsacly like an acustic. Plus i have a guitar with the 60 and it dose not sound like that
your right, but he probly has a different set up than you do. theres alot of things that go into making your sound, Pickups, Amps, Pedals and Effects, whether or not your in a room with good acoustics. Meaning the sound can bounce off the walls.
yeah that's true. spouse he could have put an acustic simulator infront of it, but that still dosent make your electric sound exsacly like an acustic. like c'mon do you really think thats is an electric he is playing honsestly.
Haha, i wanted to make sure you knew what acoustics means. and yes, it does sound very close to an acoustic guitar. extremely close. plus instead of taking a video of him playing, he put that picture. He prolly is playing an acoustic. but you cant be sure, unless he made this a video of him playing it.
nah, i just dont see the point in tlaking shit to online, its like someone talks shit to you on youtube, now come say it to my face. theres no point in talking like that online. it doesnt get you anywhere, it doesnt make you cool.
is it me or does anyone else agree that if god came down from heaven he would totaly have stairway playing from a giant marshall stack. not even because it has heaven in the title but because its just the greatest song
I think saying EMGs are good for metal and Seymour Duncans are good for clean parts is a bit silly. They're both good at either if you set up your rig right.
But even if you don't, both excel at different types of "clean." EMGs have that crystal clarity and passive Duncans utilize the wood tone. It's all you after that.

1. EMGs just dont soud too good clean
2. Have you ever listened to the actual recording? Your solo had nearly nothing in common with the original and wasnt proper at all. Please dont rape classics man!
Sorry for beeing offensive, i know its not nice but i just needed to say that
You are an idiot. The emg 60 is one of the best sounding pickups for playing clean stuff like this. Metallica has used them for years in classics like fade to black and nothing else matters.
Sorry for beeing offensive also; I really felt the need to shit all over you. <3
Anyway; that doesn't even matter; live they (James) uses the emg 60 for the clean tones which sounds perfectly.
Kirk indeed has 2 81's, which shows even an 81 could produce some good clean tones. James does most of the clean parts though, that's why he prefers a 60.
@Behindspace90 fade to black was played on gibson pups (on studio version) like 95% of songs from the 3 first albums of metallica. They start using ESP guitars and EMG pups with justice.

Nah dude, I completely agree with you. The clean tone sucks balls on these pickups. The only reason their in my guitar is for the chunkiness of the distortion...
yeah im looking at a esp m1001 one comes with emgs and the other comes with seymour duncans.i dont know what i should buy beacuse i like playing some clean stuff once in a while what should i do.

@maljr0743 i believe Led Zepellin did in fact use hybrid picking on this song in fact so if you want it to sound like the record or them live you should in fact play the lower line with your pick
dude your kinda playing stairway to heaven wrong, by using a pick its making the notes louder and if you do choose to use a pick dont pick as hard you kinda want it to be as close to the original
yeah there is, the only thing u need is a big enough space within the guitar for a 9 volt battery to go into, in les pauls theres jsut enough space within the tone pot witch u can get access to from the back of the guitar if u have space for it on ur explorer by all means get one haha, i would recomend you to take it in somewhere if this is your first time switching out pickups and watch them so u know what to do next time
Hey dude aren't dimarzio super distortion passives? So how could you combine them with emg?Therre's a lot of trouble when combining passive with active pups!
I wouldn't put an 81 and 89 together, you'd get too much frequency difference between the two, the 89 has far mroe output than the 81, if you want to use the 81 put the 85 in the bridge or the the 85 in the neck and the 89 in the bridge, but i prefer the sound of the 81 and 60

Actually i was not able to test them clean uner good conditions cause my good amp is in our practise-room and at home i have just a shitty small amp with a blown speaker...sounds good distorted and crunched but totally clean the blown speaker distorts it again...but i guess itll be fine
actually, the emg 60 is suppose to sound heavier and a little dirty, the 85 is recomended for cleans, depends on how good your amp is too, and if you really want emg's to shine, do the 18volt mod, its beyond simple and increases the tone to its true performance

If your guitar is already set up for emg's, there's nothing to it. Its just a matter of switching the pickups around, and they come with the quick connect connectors so its not like you'd even have to solder the wires. In no way, shape, or form would it screw up your guitar. Just correcting you =)

HansShaffer 3 years ago
Have you tried it? Didn't think so. It sounds fine, as long as your amp, etc are set up for it.
Slipknotfanatic89 3 years ago
No i wont screw up my guitar just to try something....sorry;)

If your guitar is already set up for emg's, there's nothing to it. Its just a matter of switching the pickups around, and they come with the quick connect connectors so its not like you'd even have to solder the wires. In no way, shape, or form would it screw up your guitar. Just correcting you =)

its a great one. sounds fat and great.
Broodkill 3 years ago
fat? rather not they are flat, highly compressed, trebly and narrow responsive.
adrs2 3 years ago
compressed yes. fat they are. and loud as SHIT alot more genral output then the 85. narrow responsive maybe. flat nah. but NOT trebly.
Broodkill 3 years ago
i heared it one more time, yes it would be more mids, but they are somewhat bright hard to explain... don't like them anyway like any other emgs ;P
adrs2 3 years ago
uh, an 18 volt mod fixes the compressed sound

I love EMG pups. Fantastic. Everyone says they have no tone, or that they're sterile. I disagree. This is a very warm, fat pickup.

That's cause its the '60 :p The '60 is surprisingly good for cleans when in the neck position, especially for being an active EMG.
