this is a poor generalization.  there are plenty of mushrooms that can be consumed raw, but some should be cooked. the highly prized morel mushroom in many cases causes gastric upset when consumed raw.

most mushrooms are to toxic to eat even cooked, some are edible if the toxin is destroyed by cooking, some are toxic but you will never know it because they didnt make you sick. and then some people are more sensitive to toxins more than others. some are poison only is eaten with alcohol. they really are pretty tasteless when not cooked its like why bother.

@redtsika Beats me. I can understand some of the "exotic" mushrooms such as oyster, woodear, etc. But "button" mushrooms and portobella (sp?) mushrooms are often fine raw. They just have to be properly washed. I try to cut off the very bottom portion of the stems or remove it entirely. But that's personal preference.
