  • Sousa was dead by the time The Music Man was written

  • I remember watching this in my elementary band class. C.O. 2003.

  • i play the solo from 1.40!!

  • I love this musical!

  • i like this song. the lyrics just flow through my head!

  • As stated previously, a "Quodlobet".....Meridith Wilson once played for Sousa....and this is all part of the song that intorduces this march in the musical. Teike and Reeves were given credit by Wilson along with Sousa.

  • The best trom-boners in town!

  • Meridth Wilson is the composer . This is from "The Music Man"

  • yeah.. its like stars and stripes piccolo solo,,,,...

  • I can also hear E. E. Bagley's "National Emblem" at 1:27 and Souza's "Stars and Stripes Forever" at 1:40 in this arrangement..

  • This is a "quodlobet", we hear D W Reeves "Second Connecticut National Guard March" and "Carl Teike's "Alte Kameraden" as well...a great piece without question!

  • By Meredith Willson (d. 1984) a one-time flutist under both J P Sousa and Arturo Toscanini who also composed two exceptionally fine symphonies inspired by various areas in California. Definately worth listening to if you can find them. Nothing at all like what we're used to in "The Music Man". It was Sousa who taught Willson conducting and score-reading.

  • @Dogsledfan It was Wilson who said the when Sousa published his music for public consumption, he always wrote poor arrangements so no other bands would sound as good as his. Some stock marches of his really sound bad - they all need re-arranging.

  • nice very nice

  • 1,120 views and 5 ratings????????????

    anyways i love this song!

  • This is a great tune, but Sousa did not write it. Meredith Willson did (for "The Music Man").

  • It does include themes from Sousa' s works, but yes, "76 Trombones" was written by Meredith Willson.

  • @blandoon I think it is here because it pulls a lot for Stars and Stripes Forever. Listen to that and then the music at around 1:30 it is very similar if not the same.

  • @angelus1223335 starting at 1:35 with the whole orchestra playing descending notes and then the flutes and piccolos playing their thing is the same as stars and stripes
