That's a pretty epic tail there! How on earth did you get it to look so smooth, and bounce so much? All the other ones are fluffy, and aren't nearly that awesome.
@ZielOmizu It's the same prim-layering technique that's seen in other flexi-tails - in fact, this was the very first usage of that technique, to my knowledge. I applied the alpha-transparency very carefully to each prim in order to match up the "seams" and make the tail appear as one smooth, continuous shape. There's one or two spots in the video where you can see one of the prims de-sync from the rest.
I made a secondlife. Im reeeeaally wanting to turn my guy into a furry. Could you please give me some tips? I dont even know how to edit the face shape, much less where to go to do that.
You can hide your own name on your screen in the preferences, but you can also toggle the entire GUI using Ctrl-Alt-F1 (usually the best solution for recording).
@missLAURALOU28 I recorded this using Fraps, then edited it together with an old video editor called Video Factory by SonicFoundry. I haven't tried recording from SL Viewer 2, but Fraps should work just as well with it.
@missLAURALOU28 You can download Fraps from Fraps dot com, if you haven't already. In addition to the Help feature in the software itself, there's a Support section on the website that answers frequently asked questions.
Well, I made this vid back in 2006, right after flexis were added to SL... and long before sculpties were added! The tail is actually made with 3 tapered flexi-cylinders specially textured to look like one seamless object. They move in unison because they're all the same length and centered at the same position.
Heh, I didn't even realize someone had made a viewer capable of flexi-sculpts until just now when I searched for it. Thanks for bringing that up - that's pretty sweet! :3
Beat, I commented ages ago about how I liked your music, and this is still one of my favourite tracks.
Thanks for the pointer to the ivory tower. It was a helpful place, and I've actually done some building in SL now, heh... Just an interesting tidbit, there.
I wrote it 8 years ago in Paragon 5 Gameboy Tracker, a program for making Game Boy Color music. You should be able to find a download link by googling for it (it's freeware).
Artie the white arctic fox, my name as a furry, that tail makes the furry fox flow with the grace of a real dancer. The tail is needed to counter the Balance of the furry body. just like the squirrel that walks across a wire.
SL is a pretty demanding application. If you haven't already, though, you might try downloading one of the alternative 3rd party SL clients to see if any of those work for you - there's a list of them at wiki . secondlife . com/wiki/Alternate_viewers. Why can't you download the songs? I just checked my music page and the links are working fine for me. o.o Try it again... maybe the hosting server was on the fritz earlier?
Anyway, glad you like the video! And I actually made that tail in RL as well (though it's not flexy, sadly). ^_^
You can either try your hand at making one yourself, or you can purchase one from an avatar maker. Either way, Luskwood (in Lusk sim) is a great place to get started - they have a great selection of avatars to choose from, and there's lots of friendly folk who hang around there and are willing to offer aid to aspiring builders.
Oh. Hey you were the one that made that song? That was one of my favorite gestures in SL at one point :). (I'd always play it off where no one could hear and get annoyed by the spam). I'ma check out your other musics :)
Haha! That script does seem to get around a lot. :3 I used to distribute it already prepared inside an invisiprim... To this day, I still get people asking me about the high-heel shoes or robot avatars they bought from me (I don't even make those, let alone sell them), and I constantly have to explain to them that my name only shows up in the Creator field because the actual creator of the item used my invisiprim in its construction! XD
It's actually not a sculpty! Notice that the video was uploaded in May of 2006, long before the addition of sculpties to SL. Moreover, it's not yet possible to make flexible sculpties in SL. :3
All it is is a set of 3 flexible (and 1 non-flexi at the root) tapered cylinders shaped and textured in such a way as to have the appearance of a single, continuous tail form. If you look closely at 0:51, you can see my tail "come apart" for a moment. Yeowch! x.x
well could you do some sort of tutorial video that shows us how you made it(cause I would really like to make one of my own, that way my tail doesn't look like a lump)
You can find various vendor tails in furry areas of SL (including my own FoxyFlex Tail in the Luskwood General Store) that are designed in this way. If you press Ctrl-Alt-T to turn on Highlight Transparent, you can see for yourself how the basic shapes are put together and textured to create the illusion. I'm afraid I'm not much of a tutorial-maker myself. :P
Beatfox, are you aware of dimpling cylinders? (change to sphere, dimple, change back to cyl)? It may be possible to dimple each prim at a different section to accomplish the same shape as your tail without alpha layering. (Each prim could then use the same texture) I'm not sure if the flexy would be as syched, though.
Looks nice ^_^ there are many avatars like that on SL, and yeah I also prefer flexy tails much more then static ones made out of spheres which look horrible.
Second Life! It's an open-ended virtual environment where the content is created by the users rather than the developers - check it out at secondlife-dot-com.
I can't take credit for the dancing animations; those were freebie anims I picked up from various sources at various times throughout my SL residency. :3
You are the definiton of awesome with that tail...i couldn't come close.. also i lag..and dont know how to record for crap..XD..but awesome..dont see many tails like that these days despite how cool they are. Whoo Beatfox!!!
Okay I officially LOVE that tail.... how the hell did you make it? All fox tails i see are split at the end to make the point which kinda looks funny when you move... but yours is a solid prim!! What shape is it? *is confused* (It doesn't take much to get me confused mind.)
Like Adeon said, it is actually 4 prims precisely textured to have the appearance of a single continuous shape. Back when flex prims first came out in 2006, I was spending a lot of time experimenting with them and figuring out how I might be able to position & texture them to make a decent fox-shape tail for my Beatfox avatar (I hadn't seen anyone else come up with a foxy-looking flex tail at that point). This was the result of those experiments. :3
hey dude that avs tail is awsome the music background and your av gives it a sonic sortah feel 1000000000000000000/10 good job hey dude oh and anybody wana hangout in sl my user name is Draycko
Love the '' Flop, flop, diddy, flop, pop'' kinda song on the background.. And in advance, no I could keep a straight face writing that description '^^.
Awesome dance too, I can't remember how many times I have come here before and left an comment.. Simply because I cannot resist your flexy tail, hehe..
Thanks, LugiaLightning! The only script I used was one that made the whole tail object twitch on its own periodically - the script's effect is really only noticeable in this video when I'm standing still at the beginning. The overall effect of the flowing tail movement is simply due to its flex prim construction.
ehm, im pretty sure this is from the game Second Life. There players can edit and build almost anything, including the character ofcourse, which is displayed here
I never claimed to have much of a first life in the first place - even *before* SL. :P In all honesty, though, I view SL as an extension of RL, not as an escape from it. SL provides me with the opportunity to try things that would be much more difficult or impossible by other means, such as designing and building fun things that people can view and interact with on a large scale (as they interact with each other, as well).
I built the avatar within Second Life itself, and I used Paint Shop Pro to design the avatar textures. The footage was recorded using Fraps, and the video was edited in VideoFactory. The dance animations are not mine - they're freebies that I've gotten from various sources in Second Life.
Nah, I made all the avatar components myself back in 2004 (with the flexi-tail replacing previous tail designs later on). The feet are fairly simple, to go with the cartoony style of the character. :3
It's my own character, Beatfox, that I originally came up with 9 years ago and have modified at various points in time. I made my Beatfox avatar when I joined SL over 3 years ago, and aside from occasional small updates (such as the flexitail), it's remained relatively unchanged since then.
I see. I just thought maybe Beatfox was from a game of some kind because of the soundtrack you chose. Some people who re-create a videogame character in such a way sometimes include a soundtrack that's related to them.
Man, even the regular dance moves look better with a proper swishy tail x3 I finally broke down and installed it. But I can't figure out how to do jack and have no money xD
If you know how to build, and you're decent with image editors such as Photoshop, you can make primitive-based avatars. A good way to learn the techniques of avatar making is simply by observing other people's work. Buy a moddable av, take it apart, and see what makes it tick. :3
Are you asking how I made my avatar? It consists of objects that attach to the default human avatar. Those objects are created using the SL in-world building tools - check out an SL location called the Ivory Tower Library of Primitives in the sim of Natoma for everything you need to know about building. As for the textures, I did those in Paint Shop Pro.
The more creative types, however, tend to view SL as a great outlet for their creative expression and an opportunity for collaboration with like-minded creators. People with skills in 3D modeling, programming, Photoshop, character animation, or any combination thereof can put those skills to use as they make content in Second Life. If they get good at what they do, they can even start earning a bit of RL cash. :)
And Second Life is really what you make it. If you expect to find pre-packaged entertainment like most people are accustomed to finding in traditional games, you'll definitely be disappointed.
Dude, I MUST know what song this is. It sounds like something from a videogame, but I can't put my finger on it. Also, that's an awesome tail. I saw your vendor in-game. :)
cool, liked the music, lol i just decided to go ahead and try second life out after i seen this, but it was going so slow on my computer i couldnt even move right, sooo i was just wonderin, do you know what i would have to do to improve that on a computer? Sorry ta ask ya, but i dont know anything about computers except how to use one, lol
Thanks for the compliments! And the system I had at the time was of decent quality, but the one factor that really helped was that I was in a relatively empty area. Less avatars, less objects, less of a strain on your compy.
I made the tail back in April or May of last year. At the time, people were saying there wasn't really any way to do a complex shape like a fox-tail using flex prims... so I decided to come up with one. I think it worked out fairly well. :3
yeah i really like it btw could you tell mer how you got the shape of the tail becaise i know how to make it flexi the only way i can think of is using 2 prims but it dosent work that way
>_> i really wanna know how it bounces....

I never claimed to have much of a first life in the first place - even *before* SL. :P In all honesty, though, I view SL as an extension of RL, not as an escape from it. SL provides me with the opportunity to try things that would be much more difficult or impossible by other means, such as designing and building fun things that people can view and interact with on a large scale (as they interact with each other, as well).

how'd u do that? O_O

wut u use to make this?

I built the avatar within Second Life itself, and I used Paint Shop Pro to design the avatar textures. The footage was recorded using Fraps, and the video was edited in VideoFactory. The dance animations are not mine - they're freebies that I've gotten from various sources in Second Life.

umm i did you just use scooby doo outfit feet?
subata45 4 years ago
Nah, I made all the avatar components myself back in 2004 (with the flexi-tail replacing previous tail designs later on). The feet are fairly simple, to go with the cartoony style of the character. :3

you're cute.
you look like dragon ball Z style tails!
GO FOXES!!
...although wolves are better. XD

you saposed to represent a videogame character in this?
Kratonthefox 4 years ago
It's my own character, Beatfox, that I originally came up with 9 years ago and have modified at various points in time. I made my Beatfox avatar when I joined SL over 3 years ago, and aside from occasional small updates (such as the flexitail), it's remained relatively unchanged since then.
TheBeatfox 4 years ago
I see. I just thought maybe Beatfox was from a game of some kind because of the soundtrack you chose. Some people who re-create a videogame character in such a way sometimes include a soundtrack that's related to them.
Anyway, nice to meet you Beatfox. :)

I've often wandered about avatar creation in sl...There is very little info on the web that I've been able to find.
Zayfoxx 4 years ago
If you know how to build, and you're decent with image editors such as Photoshop, you can make primitive-based avatars. A good way to learn the techniques of avatar making is simply by observing other people's work. Buy a moddable av, take it apart, and see what makes it tick. :3
TheBeatfox 4 years ago
i always wondered too thanks for the info!
Werelion2367 4 years ago
ok can you tell me exactly you made this i got photoshop nothing for 3D modeling and programming but anything would help
SoutenKai 4 years ago
Are you asking how I made my avatar? It consists of objects that attach to the default human avatar. Those objects are created using the SL in-world building tools - check out an SL location called the Ivory Tower Library of Primitives in the sim of Natoma for everything you need to know about building. As for the textures, I did those in Paint Shop Pro.
TheBeatfox 4 years ago
The more creative types, however, tend to view SL as a great outlet for their creative expression and an opportunity for collaboration with like-minded creators. People with skills in 3D modeling, programming, Photoshop, character animation, or any combination thereof can put those skills to use as they make content in Second Life. If they get good at what they do, they can even start earning a bit of RL cash. :)

And Second Life is really what you make it. If you expect to find pre-packaged entertainment like most people are accustomed to finding in traditional games, you'll definitely be disappointed.
TheBeatfox 4 years ago
I didn't pay a thing for that avatar - I made it myself. :)

WileEFox 4 years ago
wtf computer do you have sl is so laggy on my comp
although my downstairs one is even slower than my laptop
and i have a question did you make your flexi tail or did you buy it?
any who like the music and i love the tail
castaway2000 4 years ago
Thanks for the compliments! And the system I had at the time was of decent quality, but the one factor that really helped was that I was in a relatively empty area. Less avatars, less objects, less of a strain on your compy.
I made the tail back in April or May of last year. At the time, people were saying there wasn't really any way to do a complex shape like a fox-tail using flex prims... so I decided to come up with one. I think it worked out fairly well. :3
TheBeatfox 4 years ago
yeah i really like it btw could you tell mer how you got the shape of the tail becaise i know how to make it flexi the only way i can think of is using 2 prims but it dosent work that way
castaway2000 4 years ago
also what is your second life name i would like to add you to my friends list
