I love REM I love this song..I want it played at my funeral and I want my epitaph to be " I'm out of here" God Bless REM..they have put something special in my life that no other band could have done
I never could get into R.E.M. until this record, "New Adventures In Hi-Fi" is wonderfully disenchanted and lovely. My rainy day album for the past 15 years.
I am truly blessed to have been born in the same year as New Adventures In Hi-Fi was released...but then again, they are God's, and my, favourite band.
I've only been around to see half of R.E.M's brilliant story - it's a real shame I didn't get to see the other half...:(
It's a shame they have split they were fucking brilliant and the best group in the world. The only time I could afford to see them live when they toured the UK in 2005 I had to go and need a transplant so had to sell my tickets. Not been able to afford since. Of course now I will never get to see them live, it's a crying shame.
I feel like I was left alone by someone who always has been here for me. I'd beg you "not now, please", but I guess it's too late for that. Thanks for 10th July 2003 in Warsaw. One of the best days of my life.
What is so awesome about REM, is that every time you havent heard one of their songs for a while, when you do hear it, you realise all over again, just how wonderful it is.
I love how each REM song I listen to (even after all these years) becomes my favorite, till the next one. I have my top 10 favorite, but the others are a very close. I'm amazed how each touch me in a different way and are so poignant.
@EvaMadrid1 There is a lot of folk who are tasteless out there, put 6 in the world are to many.REM are a great band, they have seemed to be around for ever. But they never boar me.I always look forward to there new stuff. And it never fails to let me down.Glad that I got to see them play Glasgow green. They were fantastic that night. They blew all there Scottish fans away that night. It was up there with the best gig that I ever saw.And they still had loads of songs they never had time to play to list.
i listened to this song every night to help me go to sleep for two years straight.. haven't listened to it for ages till now. still absolutely love it, i hope they play this at my funeral
another gem of a song from one of the best bands of all time. together with the rest of their collection you're talking about the equivalent of the crown jewels.

You know, I really used to LOVE this band...but I dunno...right around "Monster", something just changed. Shifted. Like, why does Stipe insist on looking like a psycho-fag? Yeah, Mike, we all know you're gay, but nobody really gives a shit who or what you fuck, ya know? C'mon man, ditch the cabaret makeup...you need to look like Bowie tp pull that shit off..and Mike, buddy, you ain't no Bowie in the ol' looks dept. Cool song, though.
@splitenzfreak1980 I agree. I think it was really the last great R.E.M. song. My brother and I used to do this one when we had a band (too bad I no longer have any of the old videos).
Probably my favorite album by R.E.M, my brother is a big fan at least he was when I was younger. Weird how when a sibling listens to a album to death you don't see it for how good it is but instead that damn album they don't turn off..... He's moved away now and I miss him.this music always reminds me of being young and him being downstairs listening, listening & listening... I was born '85 so most band in their mid 90's era appeals to me most, childhood attachment I guess.
@poptartmarbear Well actually, according to Michael Stipe...
"I really wanted to write a farewell song to the 20th century."
"I name check three of the great legends of that single industry 'town,' as it likes to refer to itself. In order: James Dean, Steve McQueen, Martin Sheen. All iconic, all representing different aspects of masculinity—a key feature of 20th century ideology".
A more personal example for me is when my mom talks about my grandfather who came to America in 1920 at age 12. He had a very American life. His father died when he was 15, went to work in the steel mills, then produce business. He bought his own company and ran it for decades. He died in 1993 when I was 12. My mom is sad when she tells his life stories because she misses him, but she is also happy and proud all he achieved.
@killerjoebenson I think you are missing the point. It is not a sad song. It is about the end of an era. The 20th century had its good and bad moments, but it was a good century overall. Look how happy the guys in the band are throughout this video. It is like talking about a happy memory from your childhood. You remember it happily, but you are sad because it is gone forever to the past.
One of their best videos of all time. A killer song. Makes me MISS BILL so much, though. A fun video to watch, and looks like it must have been great fun to make, as well.
My favorite part - watch the black plastic bag floating near the ground, from the left to right hand side of the screen, starting at 3:29. Cracks me up. I bet it was not intentionally done, but they probably saw it in the editing process and left it in, that's how they are. R.E.M!!!!!!!
