  • I must say Bartoli sings better than Callas here

  • @thomastmwc Technically (and largely in a coloratura sense) I agree, but Bartoli's performance isn't even half as electric as Callas'.

  • @operaticsnyc well :)

  • i like the earlier bartoli. and pablo elvira? in his 50's here? he sounds great!!!

  • ahh ceicei is the best!

  • WOOW!!! dos grandes REUNIDOS!!...al final el la tapa con su GRAN cantidad de armónicos...jeje

  • Opera suffered a great untimely loss in Pablo Elvira, whose singing was very beautiful with a vibrato as smooth as a cat's purr. I value my several recordings by him.

  • BRAVISSSIMO!

  • Charming! But she does sing rings around him.

  • Not bad for being 58 when he performed this! Bravo!

  • light? small? I DO NOT know about that..... If is true she can not sing "standard" repertory.... I DO NOT CARE...... whatever she can sing.... she does it amazingly, and I love her singing. why the controversy? just let it be..... enjoy what it is, and the way it is.... let the others do differently.

  • This is a real treasure. Thanks for posting it! Do you by chance have any more clips from this production?

  • BRAVISSIMO COMENTARIO

  • O Pablo e cecilia bartoli são maravilho

são os melhores opera que eu já ouvi na minha vida!!!!

  • OMG... I was there... it was my first opera and I met Cecilia and Pablo... it was a fantastic experience that i cherish til this day!!!! Wow!!!!

  • I love Bartoli -- don't give a flying horse's butt about the various controversies regarding the size of her voice; on video she's fine -- and Elvira was a fine baritone -- really, one of the last lyric baritones I can think of, off the top of my head, who consistently SOUNDED like a baritone, without that heady, tenory upper register so many (think Hampson, Sharp, Garland, Gunn, Gilfry) have today --

  • omg I know! I hate it when baritones use light head voice. baritones are supposed to sound manly and sexy.

  • And I never said she wasn't an opera singer. I said she was a "niche" opera singer, which means she has a very limited rep that she can be effective in. She is not remotely a standard rep mezzo and the reason is that her voice is too small to be effective singing with colleagues who DO have standard rep sized voices. Educate yourself.

  • Her voice is not small... it is LIGHT... that's two different things. There are mezzo for dramatic operas like Verdi and Puccini and there are mezzo for Bel Canto operas like Rossini and Bellini. It looks like you need the education.

  • Don't compare her with Bocelli? Why not? She needs a mike to be effective just like him.

"cause you are not a musician"

And, as in many of your other assertions, you are mistaken. Goodbye.

  • izart1234, have you seen Bartoli perform live? I have had that good fortune, and I can tell you that she sings VERY effectively without a mike.

  • Let me explain something to you. People who sing at Zurich do not say to the Met, "no I don't have time" And Bartoli is not a bad singer, but she's a niche singer. Her voice is NOT large enough to sing standard operatic mezzo rep. She sings no Verdi, Puccini, or the standard mezzo heroines even in the French rep. Recordings are different. But if you want to think she doesn't have a small voice, fine. Those who are knowledgeable about opera know better, however.

  • Of course she doesn't sing Verdi and Puccini... she is a "Bel Canto" singer which is a totally different style of Opera... mostly for Rossini and Bellini, etc. The same is true for Tenors like Juan Diego Florez. Their repertoir requires a much lighter voice which the "standard" mezzo heroines that you talk about could never do.

  • And by the way, the Tucker Gala is NOT at the Met. It's at Avery Fisher. At what opera houses have you heard her live and in what roles? As for someone thinking she's the best they've heard, well, that's not too compelling. Lots of people think that Bocelli is better than Corelli, so there you go.

  • You are simply an idiot. Obligated to Zurich so she can't come to the Met?? Hahaha!

  • Singing a duet on a concert or gala is VERY different than singing the role in the house. As for what lots of people think... lots of people think Bush is a good president too. The fact is that Bartoli has not sung at the Met in years and as I said, there's a reason for that.

    Ciao.

  • She has sung a very small repertoire in major opera houses. She hasn't been to the Met in years and there's a reason for that. You can't hear her. I heard her Susanna in Figaro at the Met. Or tried to hear it. She did NOT sing this piece with Terfel at the Met. Neither of them has sung these parts at the Met. Do your homework. Rossini's Figaro is MUCH to high for Terfel. One of the greatest mezzos of baroque opera perhaps.

  • he is really a great comedian

    God bless him

  • Cecilia wonderful as always!! Wow!1 - Too bad that Pablo Elvira sometimes sings quite loud, much louder than Cecilia. He should only accompany her in the third part of the aria. Nevertheless: Cecilia sings wonderfully!! Thanks for posting!

  • I heard him live. I don't think it's so much that he sings loud as it is that he did heavier repertoire and as such developed a very forward way of singing to project. Cecilia, however, never sang really beyond a very specific repertoire.

  • TOTALLY RIGHT...

  • No, not too bad that Pablo sang loud as his voice was NOT large compared to other top flight baritones. It was uncommonly beautiful however. The thing you're hearing is that Bartoli has a very small voice. Trying to hear her in the Met opera on several occasions that I've been in attendance was almost impossible. Just not a voice for the the operatic stage, but a nice recording voice.

  • Brava Cecilia ! Que ROSINA !!! Es insuperable. gracias mil por colgar, Fabian !!! Por fin, una Rosina en "directo"
