We are so lucky to be witnessing the hard work involved before a finished performance. Karajan demands perfection and gets it. And I don't see a trace of anyone being afraid of him either.
What an amazingly dedicated group these people are. Thank you so much for posting such rare footage.
I am not a Karajan fan, but his rehearsals have completely changed me. He really knew what he wanted to hear. He really knew the orchestra and sound and what the composer meant. I am amazed by him.
And please people, get over the better and best thing. It is old, you are allowed to enjoy it all. Why does every video degrade to a better best argument?
jessye Norman, in my view, is the greatest soprano in our generation, the last part of the twentieth and the beginning of this. Tabaldi, Callas, Sutherland, they don't compare to this goddess.
@michaels7 -Besides the above names you can add Ponselle,Caballe,Nillson,Flagstad, and a host of others that were better. Music being subjective-I too should not be so opininated
Che dire... sono talmente straordinari per la loro perfezione e per quello che riescono a trasmettere, che mi esaltano e mi commuovono. Io li ADORO entrambi!!!

Karajan: I saw him so many times at the Vienna State Opera..... my firm belief is that he was a charaltan from start to finish, and NO, I'm not even going near his filthy past politics. But every opera he touched turned into a soap opera. Lifeless, tedious, 'pretty'.
I remember making this video. At 4:53 the was a break in the film. I am glad you posted it again. Sadly, much of my music posts have always been trolled to death. Are they not both wonderful!!! Kind regards my friend in music.
Fasicnating at how her large voice can reduce to such a piano and create that kind of sensuality and then all of a suden just relentless against fortes. Wonderful clip!
In the 'Ultimo Concerto' and this one you can see that v. Karajan has found his Diva Ultima for this area in La Norman by his comments to the orch to "support the vocalist" only and by the ecstacy in his eyes as he sings along with her...
does anyone possibly have the rerhearsals from Ariadne auf Naxos with Jessye and Kathleen Battle ? I loved those videos and now they are'nt on youtube :[
...a performance that grabs the human heart as we watch it, knowing this is Karajan's last performance, knowing that he still had so much to offer life, not just music, but wisdom and the delicate touch of a human heart that went through and beyond music, magical, magnificent music. . . .
Thanks, Herbie, thanks for all of it that you gave us—and thanks to Eliette for being the right person for him, at the right time, in the right and patient way for this to happen for us all!
Hmm... i remember making this video years ago... you can see the cuts... it does not match with the film... jessye is bloody wonderful!

If Rumpwrestler thought Karajan was a charlatan why did he go and see him so many times? Can't have it both ways

at 8:16-`I would have marked him D in orchestration` - -a wonderful clip. HvK looks and sounds less frail than i`d have imagined at this final stage.
