@Mowqlieboy69 Heavyweight is not only a division. It is the very top of boxing. When you say the middleweight champion of the world,it means he is the vest of the middleweight division. When you say the heavyweight champion of the world,it means he is the best/top of whole boxing world.
This is really something. Such a brilliant display of clean in-fighting by both men, both of whom were also so young and relatively inexperienced in the pro game. A look at Grant here gives just the faintest taste of all of the boxers of yore who faded into oblivion as the years went on despite being very good fighters in their day, and there's so many more where that came from.
Johhanson,Machen,Cooper,Chuvalo,Bonvena, they all of them were real tough heavyweights and Floyd beat them all. Amd He really beat Maxim,Quarry(twice)and Ellis too. Floyd really only lost to Johhanson,Liston and Ali.(Floyd was way past his prime)
All af them were good heavies, but not great ones as were Liston and Alì.... Floyd was good at heavy, but i think he should have been one of greatest like heavy of all times...
The heavyweight championship in those days were really exceptional. Floyd could even fight as a middleweight, but he wanted anything less than the very best. He is the most underrated champion of all time. I think he was one of the best p4p fighter of all time.
One more thing, what made you think Liston great ? That's all he beat Floyd, isn't it?And what else? Liston fought championship fight only 4 times and total of only 10 rounds. He won 2 and lost 2. And how did he lose?
btw,Floyd weigh only 168 for this fight. He could make 160 if he wanted to,but he wanted the HVweight title and he got it! It means 10 times more than winning a Lt heavy title. The HVwt champion is the top of boxing while Lthv title holder is only a division champ.
I think Liston was great cause not simply won against Patterson: he destroyed him... and the same did with many good heavies (Williams, Folley, Bethea)...
His matches with Alì are farces, nobody can count as they were real...
So maybe it wasn't Sonny what destroyd Floyd then.Maybe you shouldn't count matches with Floyd too then. Have you seen Sonny Liston vs. Leotis Martin fight in 1969?Floyd was after Sonny for a long time looking for 3rd fight with him to prove something and then it happened to Sonny in 70. Liston was all around mystery.

And now to state the obvious: Floyd was a BEAST!

Sad fight to watch. Grant had a great chin.
Who could have beaten Patterson at that weight at that stage of his career?

Probably it should have been better for him to fight as light heavy, he was too small to fight real heavyweights like Liston and Alì...

@NeonLeon78 Liston's best work was done prior to winning the title.

@NeonLeon78 What does that mean? Heavyweights are only a division as well.
