beautiful ad... she speaks to her childhood... she tels her self as a child to "make a wish" implying that came true when she grew up (fame and success..)
Too bad Pepsi withdrwe it due to the official song video...
Too bad that the video was considered disrespectful to the Church.
I actually remember watching the video right after the commercial. It was after the Cosby show. I was around 10. I didn't have mtv then. I remember talking about it in school the next day, I talked about her tight dress. I see everywhere that the video premiered on mtv the next day.
@Jerz1983 The wonderful thing is that when they were shooting the video Madonna actually said to the producer with a smirk "So are you going to have the burning crosses glinting on the Pepsi can?" to which the producer said, "What do you mean?" and she just smirked and said, "You'll see!" before walking away. Love her!
@Jerz1983 Actually, I thought that He was what you said too, but he (Leon Robinson) was inteded to represent Saint Martin de Porres. So he wasn't a black version of Christ.
Yeah... it was banned because of the portrayal of a Black Jesus, Cross Burnings, Kissing Black Jesus, Madonna with Stigmata, all wrapped up in a murder mystery where a Black man is jailed because a gang of white thugs murder a woman.
The video was heavy and had a lot of heavy themes mired with racial and sexual overtones. Even for today.
It just shows how way behind Americans were in there thinking 20 years ago! There was nothing wrong with this commercial at all! Just because there was a black "Jesus/actor" in the music video they threatend to boycott Pepsi, how racist is that!??They said it's Blasphemie!!! Honestly!!! What about freedom of expression? Now they have a black president and seem to have grown up a bit! Well at least M got to keep her $5 million and Pepsi looked stupid to the rest of the world!
it was banned becuz in the video 4 like a prayer Madonna has a black man portraying god......... I SEE NOTHING WRONG WITH IT..If u don't believe me read the last chapter of the bible.. DO YOUR RESEARCH PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!
Exactly! What was the big hoopla? Not a Madonna fan here but I see nothing offensive on this commercial. I guess some of my fellow Americans were happily "drinking the Kool-Aid" instead of Pepsi from the right wingers. Lol
@cRaZyGurl91 If you've ever seen the movie Almost Famous then dig this: On the Cosby Show, Lisa Bonet was equivalent to Zooey Deschanel's Almost Famous character. This video was originally aired during commercials for The Cosby Show.
@cRaZyGurl91 It wasn't actually banned; it was dropped by Pepsi after one airing due to the controversy surrounding the official video for "Like A Prayer".
@cRaZyGurl91 it was because so many christian and catholic groups protested the ACTUAL music video for the song. because of this, they were also protesting pepsi ad their products. they finally banned the video in order to keep their profits.
The like a prayer video was highly controversial that pepsi didn't want to be associated with madonna anymore I guess fear that if they did people would boycott pepsi and not drink their soda anymore...
What a joke, so disrespectful to the song.

@Jerz1983 She was hinting about how controversial the video was going to be as the producers didn't know at the time. Ooh the saucy minx!

The idea of showing racism and prejudice form cops to blacks through her video was great but the part jesus kisses her is too much...
Also the way that she cuts herself in a way that immulates Jesus' wounds on the cross is wrong.
She plays the role a woman who witnesses a murder...she shoudln't have tried to portray herslef as God
It wasn't necessary and i can undersand why the video was banned....still a great song

I wouldn't have banned the commercial though.

@Mysterwright Madonna epitomized that voice of rebellion for the 80's. She was Simon and Garfunkel for Generation X.
