This was shot from a helicopter during the 5 o'clock news on KARE 11 in Minneapolis, on July 18th, 1986. It was the first time a Tornado had been filmed from the air and broadcasted live on TV. The nature center had/has an exhibit of trees inside that they pulled from the forest after this event. The trees were twisted around each other like candy canes. This video was on a monitor you could sit and watch also.
MAX'S VIDEO FROM KARE11 PLYMOUTH MN. HA ALSO FLEW IN VIATNAM AND THIS VIDEO IS FROM THE 1989 TORNADO THAT HIT SPRINGBROOK NATURE CENTER YOU CAN BUY THE WHOLE VIDEO FROM KARE 11 STUDIOS STILL ITS UNCUT ITS CALLED UNHEARD SIRENS.......
@js35701 A suburb called Spring Lake Park. North of Downtown Minneapolis Minnesota in July of 1986. The forest is located in the Spring Brook Nature Center.
Dude that music is creepy as hell! It's like something out of a bad horror flick lol. Great footage and yes the helicopter pilot has got some cojones!
This was the first tornado ever filmed from a helicopter, and was broadcast live on the 5pm news on the local NBC affiliate. The forested area is The Springbrook Nature Center in Fridley MN. 1986. They have an exhibit of trees they saved, that were actually twisted around each other for you to see. Absolutely amazing!
they have weather planes that go right through waterspouts which is nuts lol even more than this but tornadoes carry debris which can easily knock the thing out the sky
Though this is before I was born, if I was alive at the time, I could see it from my front yard... In fact I just walked through that nature center the other day. Still trees down to this day.
One cool thing about the aerial view is you get a really good sense of the complexity of the airflow in the funnel, as well as the strength of the inflow and core updraft. Check out the motion from about 3:00 onward.
I remember watching this on KARE-11. The most amazing part about it was that most of the footage was taken by a helicopter! Think about that... how easy would it be for the winds to knock down a news helicopter? You STILL don't see footage like that today
I remember this too and the pilot and camera man were special guests and the helicopter in the Aquatennial Torchlight Parade. They got a loud ovation!
That's right. I was actually there and saw it. Very young at the time but it was quite a sight. I remember seeing the helicopter flying too. That evening I taped the evening news since they did a special program with all the footage of the tornado. Great shots! I still see these videos pop up in docu's from time to time.
Wow. I was just randomly checking out tornado videos and found this with Tangerine Dream music for its soundtrack. The "Rubycon" music fits very well with the tornado pictures. Very cool.
I remember this video. It was the introduction to a special that KARE-11 in Minneapolis made about the tornado I think around 1991 or 1992. It was hosted by Paul Douglas.
This is fucked up

The camera-man and pilot are either incredible great heroes, or incredible stupid. Personaly me would be brown on the full body :-)
trianero2009 10 months ago
They should put this on blu-ray. Infact, make an entire tornado documentary on blu-ray. I'd buy it.

Aerial view is by far the best.
Allows perspective and discernment of size and violence unmatched by ground footage.

actually no the ef scale is based on the damage not the wind speed or how fast its spinning
davidwheeler69 1 year ago
Fujita scale rates amount of damage, not how fast it's spinning. If there is no damage, it's rated an EF-0.
ericyount 1 year ago
@ericyount Actually thats F-0, I'm pretty sure EF is actually wind speed.
EvilLurker121 1 year ago
@EvilLurker121
Both scales are both based on damage, though you're right that this was F0 rather than EF0 since this took place before 2007
dragonridley 1 year ago
@Maincontrol999 highest it got was f1, most of its life it was f0

[ "nah nah, my storm chase teams view is BY FAR the best" ]
How?
Difficult to discern size,
hills, trees, building often obscure view,
you often cannot tell how far away - therefore you can'tell size.
I've watched tonadoes from the ground and from a second story roof.
Roof was better but not by much.
Would much rather have a better view which allows perspective.
Only time ground is good is when you're very close.
