  • This is fucked up

  • Jesus, if ever a song fit a video, this is it. Fuckin' insanity!

  • This was shot from a helicopter during the 5 o'clock news on KARE 11 in Minneapolis, on July 18th, 1986. It was the first time a Tornado had been filmed from the air and broadcasted live on TV. The nature center had/has an exhibit of trees inside that they pulled from the forest after this event. The trees were twisted around each other like candy canes. This video was on a monitor you could sit and watch also.

  • The camera-man and pilot are either incredible great heroes, or incredible stupid. Personaly me would be brown on the full body :-)

  • They should put this on blu-ray. Infact, make an entire tornado documentary on blu-ray. I'd buy it.

  • This tornado scares the crap out of me :o

  • By far one of the more bizarre looking tornadoes ever caught on tape

  • MAX'S VIDEO FROM KARE11 PLYMOUTH MN. HA ALSO FLEW IN VIATNAM AND THIS VIDEO IS FROM THE 1989 TORNADO THAT HIT SPRINGBROOK NATURE CENTER YOU CAN BUY THE WHOLE VIDEO FROM KARE 11 STUDIOS STILL ITS UNCUT ITS CALLED UNHEARD SIRENS.......

  • thnx man

  • its about ef1- ef3

  • where was this filmed?

  • @js35701 A suburb called Spring Lake Park. North of Downtown Minneapolis Minnesota in July of 1986. The forest is located in the Spring Brook Nature Center.

  • its at least a EF3

  • is so strong to be so small, to see tress being tossed around like that is scary and they arent small trees either.

  • I like the last second of the clip. Talk about contrast....

  • Dude that music is creepy as hell! It's like something out of a bad horror flick lol. Great footage and yes the helicopter pilot has got some cojones!

  • Aerial view is by far the best.

Allows perspective and discernment of size and violence unmatched by ground footage.

  • actually no the ef scale is based on the damage not the wind speed or how fast its spinning

  • Fujita scale rates amount of damage, not how fast it's spinning. If there is no damage, it's rated an EF-0.

  • @ericyount Actually thats F-0, I'm pretty sure EF is actually wind speed.

  • @EvilLurker121

Both scales are both based on damage, though you're right that this was F0 rather than EF0 since this took place before 2007

  • @Maincontrol999 highest it got was f1, most of its life it was f0

  • i think it is rotating too fast for a f2, i think it is a f3-f4

  • i have nearly seen all the tornado vids on youtube and this one still scares the crap out of me especially at 0:55

  • @js35701

I thought exactly the same! The song makes it even more eerie.

  • That is the strangest tornado I have ever seen.

  • Muito doido!!

  • rare!!

  • it looks like it was trying to breakdown into several vorticies...

  • This looks just like a powerful dust devil.

  • dust devils don't rip huge trees from the ground and blow them around like cotton candy....

  • I said it LOOKS like, not that it is.

  • I watched this tornado from my house as a little kid. Cool music on this video! ****

  • a tornado is a natural phenomena, most feared, but I like

  • That is a very cool tornado!

  • What makes a tornadoe ?

  • I love vortex breakdown!

  • 0:35 was awesome! do you see how fast its spinning?!

  • I've seen that footage before. I think it migh have been sped up.

  • Actually it wasn't. that's the actual speed it spins at. I have even seen faster ones.

  • wow, it's amazing. Does somebody know how strong was that tornado?

  • all i can say....wow.

  • yo i am going to be a storm chaser when i finish high school and do you no why people get amazed when i told them i want to be a storm chaser

  • wow amazing the way the tornado was just uprooting the pine trees so easily is like us pulling weeds..

  • HAHA BY COW

  • This was the first tornado ever filmed from a helicopter, and was broadcast live on the 5pm news on the local NBC affiliate. The forested area is The Springbrook Nature Center in Fridley MN. 1986. They have an exhibit of trees they saved, that were actually twisted around each other for you to see. Absolutely amazing!

  • Do you know if this footage is still the closest a helicopter has ever gotton to a tornado?

  • they have weather planes that go right through waterspouts which is nuts lol even more than this but tornadoes carry debris which can easily knock the thing out the sky

  • Though this is before I was born, if I was alive at the time, I could see it from my front yard... In fact I just walked through that nature center the other day. Still trees down to this day.

  • I compare a tornado to when God "rips one".

  • Looks like good kite flying weather!

  • The soundtrack sounds like Tangerine Dream's Ricochet recrd.

  • cool, this is the famous footage of the fridley minnesota tornado!

  • One cool thing about the aerial view is you get a really good sense of the complexity of the airflow in the funnel, as well as the strength of the inflow and core updraft. Check out the motion from about 3:00 onward.

  • my god that thing was evil looking as hell, this video--look at it! Like it was eatting the earth. i looked at it with fear and awe.

  • Helicopter view is BY FAR the best.

Shows size and ferocity which ground cameras fail to capture.

  • nah nah, my storm chase teams view is BY FAR the best =]

  • [ "nah nah, my storm chase teams view is BY FAR the best" ]

    How?

    Difficult to discern size,

hills, trees, building often obscure view,

you often cannot tell how far away - therefore you can'tell size.

I've watched tonadoes from the ground and from a second story roof.

Roof was better but not by much.

Would much rather have a better view which allows perspective.

Only time ground is good is when you're very close.

  • the little boy with the soccer boy at the end makes this video :) jkjk amazing footage!

  • Did you add the music to this video? I would very much like to know what it is.

  • Its by Tangerine Green. I love this song

  • That would be "Tangerine Dream"

  • lol @ all the comments on here

    hi 2 u all J9

  • that tornado looks like came down from the earth.

  • thats crazy i love it lol

  • the footage still amazes me

  • I remember watching this on KARE-11. The most amazing part about it was that most of the footage was taken by a helicopter! Think about that... how easy would it be for the winds to knock down a news helicopter? You STILL don't see footage like that today

  • I remember this too and the pilot and camera man were special guests and the helicopter in the Aquatennial Torchlight Parade. They got a loud ovation!

  • Comment removed

  • This is crazy!!

i jave never seen a better lookin tornado!!!p.s. that siren scares me 2 death

  • that is NOT an F0, the base is too wide and the rotation is too fast, more like an F2. sorry but F0's don't lift trees 60 feet or more into the air.

  • This IS The Minnesota Tornado in 86. Fillmed LIve on KAre 11

  • That's right. I was actually there and saw it. Very young at the time but it was quite a sight. I remember seeing the helicopter flying too. That evening I taped the evening news since they did a special program with all the footage of the tornado. Great shots! I still see these videos pop up in docu's from time to time.

  • I believe it was rated f2 .F0 does not doe that kind of damage.

  • The powerful hands of God writing a message on the face of the earth.

  • amen. I agree

  • this tornado was rated F0

  • This tornadoe is magic just watching it turning

  • I want to let a tornadoe lift me up and levitate me cause i am the son of storm. And have it video taped for the world to see.

  • Wow. I was just randomly checking out tornado videos and found this with Tangerine Dream music for its soundtrack. The "Rubycon" music fits very well with the tornado pictures. Very cool.

  • what is the name of the song???

    please tell me

  • It's "Rubycon Part 2" by Tangerine Dream.

  • I remember this video. It was the introduction to a special that KARE-11 in Minneapolis made about the tornado I think around 1991 or 1992. It was hosted by Paul Douglas.

  • i h8 the alarm that goes of that freaks me out big time but nice vid

  • those tornadoes are near where I live!

  • Im gonn have nightmares the music is scary

  • SWEET video!! I was 7 when this happened and remember seeing the tornado when my mom was picking me up from camp.

  • Incredible footage.

I loved this tornado since I saw it in a Tv show. Thanks!

  • The music is Rubycon PT 2 by Tangerine dream. Great old progressive electronic music

  • Love the tornadoes in Fridley! At 1:02 it looks like a bullwhip!Amazing footage!

  • Excellent music choice. Great job.

  • scary with that music

  • The music is really nice.

Anyone has a clue what it is?

  • That was amazing!!!! I LOVE IT!!!! I remember seeing this on a tornado video along long time ago at my baby sitters house.
