wow great technique ive been doing aikido for about 3 weeks now and im pretty sure im not even close to doing that yet but i was wondering why didnt he break his fall with his hands?

He used the hands yes to trim the fall, but
he also went diffuse of surprise because he didn't know that technique would be used, it was the first time that Uke he receives is technical.

is called Ude garami sutuariwasa "one technique suicide". When you play yourself in the soil to knock down the opponent.
