Windows 7 DreamScene Activator

hello im having trouble with the activator when i click enable a message comes up saying 'unhandled exception has occured in your application' what do i do, do i just press continue or quit, i do know that pressing quit will close the program but i dont know what will happen if i press continue. pls reply as soon as possible, thanks in advance. :D

You can click on "yes". Most of the time that message doesn't make a difference...it's a common bug with .NET frameworks.

Thank so much dude, this thing rocks!, does it save ur settings every time you shut down the pc or u have to re-start the program and select the DSC again? if so, is there a way to save the settings and to run the program on every boot?

Unfortunately you do have to re-apply the DSC every time you log into your account, but you don't have to run the activator every time - once it's done, it's done. As far as I'm aware, there is no way to make the DSC get auto-selected every logon or boot unless there's someone who can write a .bat or .vbs script.

Did you try running the program as administrator? Sounds simple, but it usually solves a lot of issues when installing or running software.

You don't have to run this program every time you turn on your computer, but you will have to select the dream scene video every time.

Yeah. Unfortunately because this and other methods are just workarounds, there's no perfect way to fix that issue so you either have to set the desktop to have no icons or try the following.

1) Right-click desktop > Personalize > Desktop Wallpaper.

2) Select the hidden *.jpg.

3) Set *.mpg or *.wmv as Desktop Background again

That doesn't stick though, you have to repeat those 3 steps every time you log off or restart your PC.

You need the dream scene to be a .wmv file with this mod/fix. I don't know of a program for Windows 7 that accepts .dream files.

It's WinRAR. You download an evaluation copy or use a free alternative called 7zip to open it. =)

.wmv files only I'm afraid. If you have any .avi files that you want to use as a background, you could use a free program called Any Video Converter from a site like filehippo[dot]com to convert it.

I try to do this on my friend's notebook but a message keeps showing every time i try to put a video as desktop background, it tells me that dreamscene can only run when aero scheme is activatded.

Is this because you cannot change the desktop background in Windos 7 Starter???

Sorry for the late reply, been uber busy.

Windows 7 Starter doesn't allow Aero (glass effect), it's disabled and no way to enable it. I know, that sucks and it's the reason why I upgraded my netbook that I bought a year back nearly that had Windows 7 Starter on it.

There's not much that can be done I'm afraid.

That's the downside to the method this application and other tutorials use. It's not perfect since Microsoft took out DreamScene so has that affect on desktop fonts/shortcuts.

The only advice I can give is to either edit the font colour through personalization or disable desktop items/shortcuts.

I wish I could give a better answer.

Do you have dual monitors?

The only time a person should get that message is if they have a dual monitor or more setup because Dream Scene doesn't support dual monitors.

@grontesy - you have "Show translucent selection rectangle" turned off. What you need to do is: right click "My Computer" choose properties > advanced > performance > settings > and enable it from Visual Effect list.

Hello LordReserei....i did everything i was supposed to....but when i click on "Enable Dreamscene" i get a notice saying that " Access to the registry key"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\softwar­e\W7DSA" is denied . What does that mean and what do i do now ? Thanks..... Sam

Hm....I've never come across that problem before.

The only advice I can give is to make sure that you run the program as administrator and/or make sure that the account you're using has administrator privileges (is an administrator account).

Also, if you have UAC (User Account Control) turned on it might be good to disable it through Control Panel which you're trying to use this program and then turn it back on after.

You need to make sure that you select a video which matches or is near to your desktop resolution and some dreamscenes may not be true HD...just depends on who made them I guess.

for some reason no matter where i download this from, and when i run as administrator, when i right click on desktop i can see the PLAY DREAMSCENE but it isnt so that i can click on it, its that faded gray that means its not an option to be clicked at the time.... when i go to various video files that are supposed to be compatible, they dont work, i right click and theres no "set as desktop background" on there, under anything other than still photos.

Clicking continue will be okay, there's no real need to worry as it should still enable DreamScene.

It's something that I'm not aware of a fix for, no matter which method you use to get DreamScene (there are a bunch besides in this video).

It's either deal with it or don't display desktop shortcuts. Might not be the news you want to hear but it's the best I can offer I'm afraid. =/

@LordReserei01 also before we start, do you need a half decent GPU to run this? i have the Gforce GT220 and it does stuggle with some heavy screensavers.

You should be fine, the nVidia GT220 is nothing but a relabled nVidia GeForce 9600. That card should run DreamScene and heavy screensavers smoothly on resolutions of 1440x900 (like mine) or lower so I'm guessing if it struggles with heavy screensavers for you, you have something higher than that?

My video card is a HD4670 PCS 1Gb (overclocked) and is the equivalent of a 9600GT

DreamScene also relies on CPU/RAM..if you want to know my specs as comparison, I have them on my channel. =)

Make sure you run the application as administrator with UAC disabled from the control panel. Also, what version are you using?

In order to run DreamScene you need to have Home Premium or higher as Aero is required. Windows 7 Starter doesn't have or use Aero.

This program is supposed to be 64-bit compatible although I haven't tested it on a 64-bit OS since I only have 32-bit.

I'm afraid not if you are running Windows 7 Starter. That version is stripped down to the bare essentials so you don't have the Aero, glass effect and such...you're stuck using the basic theme.

One way to find out your version of Windows 7 is by

- Press Start+R on your keyboard

- type winver and click okay

You can use the program to disable it, just run it again and click on "Disable DreamScene". =)

Sony Vegas Pro for video and audio editing...I switch between Fraps and Camtasia Studio 7 for screen recording. I also used Sony Vegas Pro for creating the intro/outro which I have a tutorial under my "Video/Photo Editing" playlist on how to make it.

I have no clue, Microsoft never gave a reason for why they removed DreamScene, as for Ultimate Extras, Microsoft said the following;

"Our new approach to planning and building Windows doesn't have the capacity to continue to deliver features outside the regular release cycle. While our core development team is focused on building the next release, our sustained engineering team is focused on updates to existing features. As a result, we don't plan to create Ultimate Extras."

Sorry for the uber late reply. That's more or less the "con" of using this application the method it uses which other applications like this also use. As far as I'm aware, there is no fix for it other than to obviously not have desktop items showing.
