Back in the years before ww2 everything with the "Made in Germany" sticker was seen as cheap and nasty kinda like "Made in China" is today, but Hitler and the Nazi's made Germany produce everything with class and style, this was one of the few good things Hitler did, if you don't beleive me go read about, it tells you about the standards and policies Hitler set for everything that was being produced.
You've totally read my post wrong. They're all an assault rifle. Just because it was named MP44 and then changed to STG44, they're both the same gun i.e. both an assault rifle.
@clarissa1986 Actually it's real name would have been MKb44, meaning Maschinenkarabiner, or machine carbine, which is essentially what an assault rifle really is. At first they called it MKb42 before it was changed to MP43 (because of Hitler), then to MP44, and finally to StG44 (also because of Hitler).
@clarissa1986 uhhh no actually for a time it went under the name mp44 because hitler turned down the original idea for an assault rifle. they called it mp44 so that hitler would think it was just another smg being produced but once he saw its raw potential he had the name changed to Sturm-Gewehr 44
here a legit comment please respond if you know. how did the mp44/stg44 perform under combat situations? how did its accuracy and reliability compare to other period firearms?
I have never read any bad comments about its performance. After its initial introduction to the Eastern front, the word spread and the demand from the troops vastly exceeded production (500,000 produced). It was lighter, recoiled less because of the smaller cartridge and troops could carry lots of ammo (224 rounds vs 65 for the 98k). Like most weapons, if kept clean and properly maintained it did its job with minimum malfuctions.
I have not read any ballistic reports. However, long-range accuracy was not required. German military thinkers understood that most of the killing was done at 100 meters or less. Hence, there was no need for a rifle cartridge that was accurate to 1500 meters. Hence, the 8mm Kurz (short) round. It was very accurate at 100 meters and much more accurate than the MP40 with its short 9mm rounds. The biggest problem was Hitler, who didn't want industry to gear up for another caliber.
@hansbeerbaum There's a great book called German automatic weapons of WW2 by R. Bruce in which they test the MP44 (along side many other German automatic weapons on a firing range giving detailed reports for each), it performs more or less like a modern assault rifle and is comparable to the AK47 in accuracy, google the book and get a copy if you are interested in the subject it's very good!
no mp44 was the exact same model as the stg44, the prototype was the mkb42, and then there was the mp43, and the mp44 which changed only minor things, the stg44 name change was just for propaganda
mp-44 was used to cover it up from hitler because he didnt like the gun but military leaders knew the gun was perfect so they had to hide it and once hitler found out of its success he renamed it the sturmgewehr 44
i love how all of those comments got negatived. fucking WaW kids thinking they know shit about guns so they negative true facts. i mean...obviously its never been called anything else other than StG 44 cause WaW said so :P. dumb shit call of duty kids...
you obviously don't know anything about ww2 weapons.
The MP44, was the original name of the weapon to disquise it as a machine pistol because hitler was against the idea of such a weapon, that fires an intermediate round to be used in battle. Later on in ww2 when Hitler was given a Demo of the weapon and numerous testeminies by SS soldiers and officers, he was convinced, and deemed it worthy, and so He decided to rename the weapon to STG 44 "Storm / assault" Rifle model1944.
thanks God they didn't employed that rifle in a large number because then, the allies would've been screwed! The idea was to give one of those to each soldier. FORTUNATELY it never happened.
Roughly 500,000 were manufactured, but you'd need 500,000 skilled soldiers to use them. If they had an additional 5000 Panther tanks, they'd need 25,000 highly skilled crewmen, plus mechanics, fuel, oil, ammo, spare parts, etc.. When you do the math, you realize what a huge undertaking that would have been and why Hitler foolishly "bit off more than Germany could chew."
Some had scopes......., pretty hi accuracy others where just standard sights..... not all that good for a long range fight tho.....yay....... other thuiing has 2 Thumbs up :P

more reverse engineering by the Soviet weapons industry. They were quite good at ripping off other's ideas and making them uniquely red army i.e mass produced, ugly, and capable of functioning in the hands of a peasant in sub zero temps. Good way to cut R&D costs but still lacks the imagination of German designers.

And dremorachurl is correct, you can't hold a StG that way or you will burn your hand on the barrel.
The AK47 is also better in the fact that in can fire in almost any curcumstance given. Kalashnikov is a genious and his secret to making the Ak47 fire in almost any condition are that the moving parts in the weapon are further apart than other weapons so sand, dirt, mud, water etc. can get in those spots and it will still fire.
