I was 15 yrs old in 1981 when I first heard of AIDS. By the way, it wasn't called AIDS, or HIV, or anything in those days, it had no official name. I was 15 yrs old in 1981 when I first heard of AIDS. By the way, it wasn't called AIDS, or HIV, or anything in those days, it had no official name. Some called it GRID (Gay Related Immune Deficiency). I knew by 15 that I was gay, but thankfully I was born late enough that I hadn't started experimenting with my sexually yet. But outside of those areas, it got almost no media attention. If the early history of the epidemic is a subject that interests you, you might want to check out the book "And the Band Played On" by Randy Shilts. It's the most exhaustive study I've ever read.

How far we have come. This is everyone's issue. AIDS has no boundaries and does not discriminate. Hopefully one day a cure will be found for everyone that is afflicted with this horrific disease. Until one has witnessed a person dying from this disease it is quite hard to put it into perspective. This fate should not be wished upon anyone. No one deserves AIDS. Concerning boomers, there wasn't D.A.R.E. or other Public anti-drug campaings when they were growing up. Furthermore, in much older generations drugs simply weren't as available.
