The version that I heard originally and I finally tracked down, and thought you'd enjoy if you haven't heard it already: Doc Watson at Gerdes Folk City, recorded '62-'63. You can hear a bit on iTunes. Worth buying - great voice and amazing picking.
Your performance was very beautiful. I've picked up my guitar again after 30 years and I'm at the beginning of learning how to play again. I saw this song in the August issue of Acoustic Guitar and like the lyrics and chord progression, and I had never heard the song before...so I searched YouTube and your version was the first one I saw. It will be a long while before I can fingerpick as beautiful as you but I'll keep trying until I get there. Thanks for sharing!
Your voice sounds so beautiful. It takes me back to the days when Joan Baez used to sing these songs. I love the vibrato in your voice.
There is a folk singer from the 60's named Bonnie Dobson who was from Canada. She wasn't known like Joan Baez but did have a lovely folk voice. She had several albums in the 60's & some in the 70's. Her early albums on Prestige are her best. There is this one song she used to sing called, "Peter Amberly."
Bonnie Dobson had a lot of wonderful folk songs on early albums on the Prestige Label. She later got more into pop and different record label and not so much folky stuff. I like her early folk records the best.
I hope you can find the lyrics and learn the song. I think it will be a great song for you.
Lindsay: I just did a search for you to find the chords. When Bonnie Dobson is introducing her song, Peter Amberley she says that the song has the same melody as the Scots song, Tramps & Hawkers.
I did a search on Youtube for that song. Several there but if you type in on Youtube these words:
Guitar: Tramps and Hawkers
you will find this old guy singing & he has the chords on his post of Tramps and Hawkers. Hopefully they are exactly the chords for Peter Amberley. The melody sounds the same.
That was an amazing song and the lyrics that went with it as well.
Im amazed as to how you can vibrate your voice like that ,its such a beautiful sound .
You said back a while that your mother sang songs like this as well back in her day ? Does she have any professional songs as well that she may have posted or does she keeps them to herself and sings in private ?
Thanks for posting such a beautiful song . From : Tim
There are probably some old recordings of her and my dad floating around on tape somewhere, but none on the computer or anything, unfortunately. She says she used to sound a lot like me, though. I'm hoping to record a song with my sister who sounds a bit like me soon. That'll be fun.
Love your voice but it would be nice to see you looking at the camera more :)

Really lovely version.
Keep at it, memorize it so you can work on your stage presence too - not that it's bad, just so you can engage the camera/audience.
Compliments to you, lassie. Capoe'd at?
Regards,
JAS

Lindsay:
Go to Google and type in the following:
Traditional Ballads, Peter Amberley.
You will find the lyrics there..
Please let me know if you find it..
