Regarding others' comments on her beauty, I certainly thought she was the most beautiful western actress of the 90s. However, she is like Helena Bonham Carter; they're deceptively good performers, who, because of intelligent acting, are able to make themselves come across as even prettier than they perhaps really are, enough (in Beart's case) to make the most important meaning of the world seem to revolve around her.

This scene is all the more beautiful in the context of the film, because these two characters will have their own "restaurant scene" later, and this scene presages it, a sort of a returning to a theme like a song or a poem does. It is a very beautiful film, once having seen it you will never forget it...

I know this comment is way late but a friend lent a dvd copy of this movie and it's really beautiful that I seen it twice in one day. And Emmanuell Beart is so pretty and acting is magnificent.

I ordered a copy from amazon for myself.

I respectfully disagree. Emmanuelle was a sensuous beauty in her youth, but I always found her facial proportions to be strangely imbalanced.

It's her imbalanced facial proportions that make her very visually striking. All the great beauties have some imperfections that make them so beautiful. Beart is a more natural actress than Belluci, Belluci was a fashion model turned actress so acting is not really her forte though she was very beautiful.

Her facial proportions were not imbalanced in this film or in her youth. It's only when she started messing about with her lips about 1995 that her mouth became so big, it made the rest of her face look out of proportion. Such a shame! I think both her & Bellucci are the most beautiful actresses of the last 25 years, but whereas Bellucci tended to play more glamourous roles, Beart's best performances were quite plain characters. Beart is definitely the better actress.
