Best way to hit back at Capitalism is to create abundance of everything one need for high quality life. So much abundance that everything will become damn cheap.
Small classes, Small town, students living in 5 bedroom with Jacuzzi's and pools, Merced has the high life in a small package ...Winning!!! UCM is the best when it comes to living arrangements...
I've lived in Merced my whole life, and I never lived in a mansion...I've gone to UCD the last couple of years, and living in these dorms are a hell of a lot better than living in Merced. I hope I never live in Merced ever again.
Everyone who has ever reported on UC Merced's housing has completely over exaggerated it. A room in a mansion for only $200 this chick is crazy. I go to UC Merced and I've never met anyone with that deal. Most of this is BS used to make their stories more interesting.
I'm a UCM student who lives across the street from John and he's the nicest guy you'll ever meet. He never told them his mortgage or even used the words "desperate housewives". It really annoys me that he was portrayed in such a way especially since he's shown me so much kindness and helped me out. From someone who is actually friends with him, there's nothing bitter or disgruntled about this man.
I cannot believe there are people smart enough to make enough money to own a mansion, but enough to rent out a mansion to students. These students will never pay for damages done that exceed the secruity deposit. Lastly Cenk should be there saying "OF COURSSSSEEE". If you have 6 people sharing a house with usually 5 paying rent for 700 you have a 3,500 a month available for rent you can afford a mansion and PEOPLE THERE IS ALWAYS ONE COLLEGE ROOMMATE WHO DOES NOT PAY RENT. SO BE PREPARED
Dude over a grand a month for a shitty dorm room? Hello college bubble. That is fucking insane. When I was in school the dorms were cheaper than apartments.
Since Cenk isn't here, I'll say it, "Of cooouursse!" When I was at university in the early '90s, I knew lots of people (myself included) who lived in nice big houses. We had 4 bedrooms for $837/month ($209.25 each) plus about 30-40 for utilities etc... Even now in my mid 40s, I'm considering upgrading my education and I can afford to do it because have an apartment in a big new house for $500/mo. In Canada tuition is much less than American universities-- about $600-800 per course/semester.
@rostant999 They would most likely leave the students with the bill for damages and either re-rent it to another group of students or find a homeowner.
The rich guy who was complaining should just stfu. The payment difference is a bullshit comparison. It's not like those stundents can keep the mansion, they just rent it and all they do is rent one room in it.
That guy will own the place when he is done with his payments and i doubt he is sharing it with like 10+ other dudes.
The guy just sounds like a rich fuck who is buthurt that people with less money can live in a house like his.
and btw that estimated cost of living off campus dropped drastically this year but the real life costs don't necessarily reflect that (i.e. my rent didn't decrease this year from last year) which means that I don't feel the calculation is extremely accurate, they must assume students are living with many roommates
I just wanted to comment that the school isn't really losing any income because students are staying in town and not in the dorms. On the contrary many students including freshman, have to live in town even if their parents wanted them to live on campus for a year because the dorms are completely filled there is a shortage in on-campus housing for students.
@gzm858 The original article profiled one house that had 6 bedrooms. I know that may not be super big but its not a typical house middle class house. I'd consider that a mansion.
At the University of Oklahoma the dorm life is being ignored because you can rent a bice big 6 to 8 bedroom two bathroom house for 800 bucks a month. I'm sorry but yes find roommates, and this is idea. The dorms at my alma mater is 600 USD a month. and that's if you share this tiny ass room. Student housing in the US is ridiculous in other countries student housing means student housing!1 its affordable!!
At UCSD there are a few Mansions that students live in. They are along a cliff that over looks the ocean. Most of them are taken over by fraternity bros and they dont take very good care of the place
3000 dollars a month on a "mansion" , I am paying like 500 dollars for a ground floor one bed flat directly on the road in one of the UK's poorest cities.
In an odd way, this is something most of the banks ,who have foreclosed homes near college campuses, should consider doing. A.) It shows the home as 'active' B.) they make some income.
Ugh, you couldn't pay me to live in a McMansion in Merced. Anyone who's jealous of these kids has clearly never been to the San Joaquin Valley. I guess for those kids there's at least some upside to going to a school that shitty in a place that miserable.
i go to University of Houston and we have crappy living except for the lofts and they are small and expensive. Best option is to get together with some people and rent a house
@plpamparius I agree. I looked at dorms at my school and there are really expensive. I don't know why they are expensive but they are. As you said it is better to get a house with friends. A lot cheaper and a lot more space with a yard to play in.
@Chaoitcme Dorms are just another way for schools to generate revenue from students. There is no reason for tiny dorms to cost so much. Dorms are scams. The dorm at my school was about $900 a month. The house I moved into with my friends coast me $300 a month plus about $25 for bills.. The landlord paid the utilities so all we had to do was split the phone and internet bill. Stay away from dorms is the lesson I learned.
Even tho its cold here in Michigan, U of M has one of the nicest campus's in the country not to mention its in one of the wealthiest counties in the state lol.
@rocospi I know, no one in my class really applied for Merced because it's a new UC with absolutely no reputation of its own. But it's a UC nonetheless.
Think of the first few people who applied for UCLA, and UCB they're probably taking the same chance as me if I apply it there.
@eangeles92 Actually, having a math/engineering/IT degree doesn't necessarily mean you're always going to get a job. These days, they're(corporations)are looking for experience, first and foremost. So, if you spent the last few years of college, without an internship or some job experience, as Ana/Jayar said, sometimes it's unfair if you don't get a job right away.
Ana your jealous because you major was liberal arts, people with an actually major that required math and hard classes don't struggle that much after graduation with jobs.
@sauce1101 you also have to concider travel time. I'd rather pay 30% more to live 1-3 minutes of walking distance from the classroom than less for 15-20 minutes walking distance. And i have done so :)
The importance of travel time is seriously underestimated out there.
@gulllars Get a bike, schedule all your classes on the same day and just chill on campus in between classes so that way you'll actually only have to commute a couple days a week, It still seems highly doable. I'm not saying its gonna be easy but saving money goes a long way.
could not do this at APU in Beppu. No way. Campus is on a mountain that takes 40 minutes by bus to get there. Soooooo its a pain. Bus is $11 round-trip. I scheduled my classes twice a week just so I can afford to go to school.
@blacklite911 i have, and had, a bike. But i live in Norway, and in snow, sleet, and ice on the road does not make biking fun...
I'm also fortunate enough to have had a decent temp job since i was 18, so i still have roughly $15K positive net bank ballance (factoring in student loans and deposits) halfway through my third year of university (i did 2 years of chemistry, and switched to computer engineering, which is my passion).
I'm saving money on not smoking or having a car :)
@sauce1101 That sounds about right. It is about $1400 a month for a tiny 2 person dorm here where I am doing my masters, meanwhile I got a bachelor right outside the university for $400 a month.
Though I should say, dorm stuff does not necessarily cover food. Hell I know here at least neither of the numbers that I quoted cover food. Plus food in the campus area is marked up compared to in town. (So I am saving money AGAIN, by not living on campus)
@sauce1101 both estimates include room and board, but even with the difference in transportation costs it is still substantially cheaper than living on campus
