Yes The RSC has stolen Shakespeare for its own ends. All patrons are encouraged to donate to other more diverse organisations rather than looking at the RSC as the last vestige for the promotion of Shakespearean art. The RSC is inward looking self promoting and exercises exclusion at the highest level and offers no resolution or dialogue which encourages original creativity and understanding.
oh my goodness, you can't get better shakespear from anyone but ian mckellen. i love the way that cordelia is able to feed off him. is there somewhere that i can see the whole production, i wouldn't mind buying a dvd...
I think this is sadder than Hamlet. Hamlet might be long, but I almost started crying during the first part of this when Lear is talking about the Thankless Child.
And a little Beethoven, too--Moonlight Sonata. The excerpt was beautifully done, but I feel the added music overpowered the inherent music of Shakespeare's words. A previous postered mentioned the Kevin Kline Lear (Did you catch his Cyrano on PBS recently?) I missed Kline as Lear, but did see Christopher Plummer's--an excellent Lear. I eagerly await McKellen on PBS.
This is amazing, powerful stuff. I saw Kevin Kline do Lear on B'way last year, and McKellen puts him to shame. Kline was ok, but a lightweight compared to McK. It's so full of emotion - even those abbreviated scenes brought me to tears. PBS will be running the complete McKellen version on March 25, according to the NYTimes. Don't miss this.
It's the fool. In the play Lear says, "my poor fool is hanged". Some people take that to mean a term of endearment for Cordelia, some people think that it's a referance to Cordelia and that the fool and Cordelia were actually the same person and some just take it to mean that the fool was hanged too. Obviously this director took the last option.
It's one of the most distressing bits of the play. Really horrific.

I just started reading this. And this production looks amazing. Isn't it on PBS?

I saw him live playing Lear, but didn't think he was a patch on Ian Holm's Lear in Richard Eyre's production at the National.

Why the music? It takes away from the drama.

Your films are awesome. I teach King Lear in high school and invite students to view your work. Thanks much.

This is wonderful. It moved me to tears. I thought Michael Hordern was great but Ian McKellen is the best King Lear I've seen.

does anyone know where you can find the full Ian McKellen version online?

How was this footage filmed? Was this for advertisement purposes or was the stage production professionally filmed? Thank you.
