The Mother/Earthbound series is more than one game. In Mother 1/Earthbound 0, you fought the all-powerful alien, Giegue. In Mother 2/Earthbound, you fought Giygas, AKA what happens when Giegue becomes a little TOO psychically powerful. Ninten(theorized as Ness' dad) fought Giegue, and his grandparents actually RAISED Giegue. Ness fought Giygas, and Paula was actually the one to finish Giygas off. Mother 3/Earthbound 2 has almost no purpose to Giygas' plot.

Not so much scary so much as... disturbing and creepy. You'd have to understand the Giygas theory and Giygas' origin in general to really understand the factor of creepiness. Giygas' dialogue and music is symbolic of rape because Giygas was created from Itoi's traumatic experience when accidentally walking into an adult movie and thinking he saw a rape scene. (it was murder; traumatic enough =p)
