Collecting rain ? Ecology homes called earthships do that and collect dew and can be totally self supporting.
Some companies I know of collect rain water and store it in cisterns to use for toilets. It's called gray water.

Personally I think the pacing is perfect. It was obviously built around people with short attention spans. My only complaint with the channel is that their episodes don't have much substance to them. They are more for entertainment purposes then anything else.
When things are this entertaining, people tend to get attracted more to it. Even if the substance was minimal as you say, people are getting an small awareness, and in the long run actually learn.
For instance, I personally find Jess to be very sexy (yes, I totally fell for the sex appeal trap), and I'm now an avid subscriber and don't miss the show. In turn, I've learnt a few things over the time I've spent watching the show, and actively search for things with more "substance".
Don't get me wrong, I love the channel. It definitely does it's job of raising awareness, and I've yet to see a vid from them that I thought was boring.
