When I tried to join out of high school (military) I was denied because I am a diabetic. Is the guard any different? It seems after reading the physical requirements that the physical requirements are the same as the marines, army etc. I am now an emt with a goal of becoming a firefighter.
@tkdwm The US Military does not accept diabetics just like they don't accept other medical conditions that may present an undue burden during operations. Diabetics may go into shock in times of high stress/battle. There is no time or ability to take care of them. It presents an undue burden on the other members of the unit to keep you alive instead of fighting the fight. You can, however, join the USCG Auxiliary as they are not military. Contact your local flotilla.
@stkgc There's no physical standards for joining the Auxiliary - you have to pass a background check and be willing. I walk with a cane these days, but I am proud to do what I can to support those wonderful men and women on the Gold Side. Come see us and we'll help you get involved. It's the best volunteer job in the world!
hey you get into the Aux? if so how is it? im seriously concidering it im having a hard time getting into the Coast Guard so i think if that doesnt work out ill go Aux.
hey thats exactly what i did man. I got dqed from the reserve before i went to college and joined my local flotilla where i go to school. Right now im training to get qualified as a crew member. Im 20 and the youngest guy in my flotilla but that doesnt matter to me. Its about the mission and saving lives. Good luck whatever you decide
@uscgsar Thats cool man. yeah its always good to make a difference and save lives. thats what i want out of life. im still waiting to hear from my local Flotilla. lol its a work in progress.
How can you have a hard time getting into the Coast Guard? Any idiot can ace the ASVAB (assuming they've attended high school). If you're actually having difficulty in the enlistment process then why don't you go to college? There's a difference between Auxiliary and the Coast Guard; one pays a salary and the other does not. If you need a job, try for the Coast Guard. If you have a job and have time to volunteer, join the Auxiliary.
@americaowns11 well i got a 52 on my asvab and i need about a 70 here in tampa from what ive hurd. if i cant get in by the time im done with high school then im going to just do aux and go to colledge. You know as well as i do the way recruiting has been going.

Why isn't there a place for me in the guard as a diabetic? I am in good shape, take care of myself and committed.

@tkdwm How do you know that there isn't?
