To those talking about growing hops at home, it's very easy. This is the commercial scale. All you really need is the room to grow the plant 15+ feet tall, some good sun, and decent soil. If you can grow a garden you can grow hops at home. I just harvested my 5 plants and I'm set for homebrewing for the year. I grow Zeus, Sterling, Nugget, Newport, and Glacier. I was curious how it's done commercially after hand picking 5 plants.
Maybe I should hire some Mexicans next year. I have to say I was amazed that every single worker there was Hispanic. I would be half if not more are illegal.
OK all your comments are making me laugh! I deal in hops every day. WA..produces the most ~76% of the hops...OR ~13%... and the rest in ID. For the record Yakima Valley Hops are the best of the best. hope this helps... Have a hoppy day.
such a badass video. i want to invest in like 10 acres and start a hop farm. hard work , but what a life. i think i'll be moving to oregon to become a hop farmer. even though i'm sure starting a hop farm takes a couple years before you can get a decent harvest.
I see in your profile you are from Salem. I grew up there but I live in Portland now. So you are probably aware that Portland has the most microbreweries of anywhere in the WORLD! At most recent count, Portland has over 35, and Oregon has over 55. We are the microbrewery capitol of the world!
Is this the same facility I saw Mike Rowe do an episode of Dirty Jobs at ?

So this is all in the valley? I have not seen this being grown in central oregon..... MMMM idea? Would it not grow here in central oregon??
The government is paying people not to grow barley or wheat over here, nothing has been said about this...... though I only own 20 acres.
Thank you for the video, educational!

Is there a rope or something that runes along the vine? If there isn't, I am surprised the machine that separates the hops doesn't break that vine.

This hops production video is very interesting. Kind of spooky for some reason. Could certainly use narration instead of the titling.
