I feel the very same as some of you guys. The "slow movements" from Brahms' concertos (all of them) are truely composed by heart; Rachmaninoff's are great too but there are things missing in there for me. I believe it is the simplicity that I pursue when I'm emotionally down. I am an extremely sensitive person makes me want to just hear the essence of purity. If the music goes too complex I don't think I will be always ready for it.
@mikejr41387. yes i have heard richter, he plays the piece just faster,... but overall artistically, technically, spiritually, depth and beauty of sound and overall depth wise no one tops Arrau's version of both brahms concertos.
I agree with jero to say that it is not the best performance. The ugliest is much too strong but I prefer the one of Backhaus and Böhm or even Brendel and Haitink.
In my opinion this is the best slow movement among all the piano concertos. I used to think that the best was that of Beethoven's Emperor and I was acostumed to listen it twice or even three times bfore going on with the final movement. But I listen this one until four times!!!! I sincerely believe that it is worthy!!!
That was the ugliest sounding performance 4th movement I've heard. The beginning was way to loud and heavy. Listen to Alicia de Larrocha or Emil Gilels for a much better interpretation.
someone said about brahms that he is full of bulging chords and dithering phrases,i disagree although i understand the sentiment, the more one listens the more one is captivated
Compare this "slow" music with the "fast", I just felt that the slowness of the interpretation of the poetry is just like the International Ballroom dancing: Slow romantic Foxtrot compared with the fast paced Jive. dancewu(dot)net
Magical movement.

@MrRexeL86 Ya the part from :30 to around 1:10 is to me one of the most sincere and wonderful in the romantic repertoire.

whenever I feel bad about being a perfectionist, I listen to this piece and realize I'm an amateur in everything I do. It's all relative!

Sorry for a second comment, but the violinist on the right at 4:26 looks like James Levine.

@GusMagnusO I had the same experience! And Barenboim looks so scared during the third movement, when he had to look at the conductor lol

@GusMagnusO LOL!!! I JUST ASKED THE SAME IN THE FIRST VIDEO!!!LOL

Love the smile at the end of the third movement from Barenboim and Celibidache. So they should be pleased! It was a great performance.

I really don't like this pianist! Sokolov's interpretation is the best!

I think the re-recording process had some problem, the audio saturated and sounds broken...

It is not used to answer this fool comment!! May be Barenboim needs a teacher like you!! For God sake!!!

I too think that the performance is good. But really for me the best interpretation of this concerto is the one of Claudio Arrau.
svetlomirzlatkov 2 years ago
does the 4th movement start at 4:20?
ohmygoditsabear1 3 years ago
You mean despite the huge pause from 2:45 to 3:00? No, 4:20 is not the start of the 4th movement.
marliben 3 years ago
my bad. i dont know much about classical music.. is there a name for the kind of transition that happens at 4:20?
ohmygoditsabear1 3 years ago
No worries, bud. It's just a development section. Yeah, the mood changes, but still 4th movement.
