Why is it that the airforce has the guest utililze an oxygen mask in the f-16 but in the f-18 the Navy doesn't? Can anyone help?

@smokeyhat My guess is that none of them were going above 10,000ft, the height above which you would wear an oxygen mask. Don't forget this was all done for TV so it was probably the producers choice as to what would look better...

@smokeyhat As far as I know its bcs of F-16s Emergency Power Unit. It runs on hydrazine, very toxic stuff. So in case of loss of electric power or hydraulic pressure EPU will start, and hydrazine will burn, producing toxic fumes. Wearing a mask protects pilots from inhaling it and supllies them with pure oxygen.

@qsdfqsdfqsdfq It is toxic at normal pressure and in case of longer exposure, but in this case it is a 100% oxygen. F-16 oxygen control panel has selector switch with "normal" and "100%" positions. In case of cockpit smoke or EPU activation/leak pilots are required to put the switch to 100% position. At "normal" position ambient air is mixed with pure oxygen from F-16 storage cylinder, so that would be bad in case of hydrazine leak or burning.

hooyah blue angels! they dont need any masks, just give them some gum and they're good. im on NAS pensacola right now, and seeing the blue angels practice is amazing, it never gets old. ive seen the thunderbirds too, but they dont do as much crazy stunts as the blue angels. u will never see the thunderbirds get as close as the blue angels do.

@wolf1010 dude the blue angels pull 7 g's and Thunderbirds pull 9 (I guess), but the blue Angels can do one thing the Thunderbirds can't and that's landing on a carrier. Landing on a carrier is the hardest thing to do in aviation.

That's not right, combat pilots wear G-suits in the Hornet, and so can the Blues. They just choose not to. They lost a pilot possibly because of that reason. I'm surprised they haven't changed the requirment to wear a G-suit for the Blues this season.

This isn't true at all. The Blue Angels don't wear G-suits because of the precise nature of their flying, they simply find it more comfortable to not wear the G-suit. It's a prefference thing that's all. I think the real reason they don't wear them is because of how they appear when they march in formation out to their jets. The Thunderbirds whear full gear simply because the Air Force has regulations and higher command chose not to relax them for the T-Birds.
