in both 1981 and 1983 and from 1987 on the Grand National highlights were shown as a separate programme whereas up to 1980 and in 1982 they were shown as part of Match of the Day and in most cases the Grand National was actually on the same weekends as the FA Cup semi-finals where in which the BBC had only the one game on Match of the Day or in 1988 when the BBC had both
peter o sullevan makes several mistakes in his commentary, he refers to hallo dandy whos disputing the lead as the ladys master several times, he also mentions both duncreggan and thats it who are out of the race
@MrMatbri What a nasty, spiteful and stupid thing that is to say to 'DamEllSunny'. His comment was obviously with regards to the exciting finish of this race. The early to mid 80's were a time when there were very few horses lost in the National. Of course Duncreggan's death in this race was very sad, but you are well out of order calling true racing fans 'wankers' and saying what you did. Grow up.
Always great to look back, funny seeing mark pitman as corky pulled up! As a boy,saw him at aintree on saturday, tanned, and very little hair on his head and the wife nicked a cake off him,the pitmans aren't as prominent as they used to be but in their time they did a lot to promote the sport and had great horses!
I remember being like a frigging lunatic watching this in my cousin's house. I had £3 to win on Corbiere. When Greasepaint was coming at him, it was heart attack stuff. 13/1 I think he won at - £42 back, about half-a-week's wages back then.
Did exactly the same got the tip from an old lady we used to deliver to , read the form in the morning and thought it had a chance £3 quid bet £42 won woohoo
Then bet on the next race another tip from someone in the bookies Sabin Du Loir, still remember the name till this day, went mad an stuck a tenner on out me winnings...romped home cant remember the odds though. Great day and Night it was
@Cloughjordan23 Colonel Christy also ran in the 1987 national, and was ballotted out of the 1989 race when aged 14. He ran in three Welsh Nationals 1981 (4th), 1982 and 1983 (fell). He was also a full brother to the very classy King George and Gold Cup winner, Captain Christy.
So much for the loonies who call for it to be banned as it's cruel to "force" horses to jump. They love it! How could a man weighing about 9 stone and waving a twig with a bit of leather on the end, force a National Hunt bred horse to do anything. If they don't want to move an inch, then you need a tractor to shift 'em.
I am in floods of tears watching that. I was 9 years old then, Corbiere was my choice ( my Dad bet 50p each way on him for me) and I screamed myself hoarse taking him up the home stretch. Grand National fever has never left me since then.
@SFGfx I was 9 in 1981 and was exactly the same watching aldaniti win it , me and my mam were screaming at the tv, such memories never fade mate, it's emotional watching it again.
@calmster I remember Aldaniti very well too. I was a little young to know the back story (Aldaniti's injury, Bob Champions illness). All I knew was that both my parents were emotional and I was crying because my horse (Royal Mail) didn't win!!
Grand National day is as big for me as Christmas (and I love Christmas) and I love watching the old races. I still think Corbiere is one of the best National horses ever.
... how I never had a heart-attack watching this, I'll never know. I had £3 to win on Corbiere at 13/1 --- forty-two quid was more than half-a-week's wages for me back in 1983. Great memories.
