in 1975 i was 10 years old and i caught "scarlet fever" , I was locked in a room for 6 days so i didn't infect my brothers and sister. My mom bought me food and drink and took pity on my by giving me books and a record player. she also gave me all her carpenters albums. I ended up listening to the carpenters over and over. when i came out of that room i knew karen personally ( i felt) . I'm grown now with kids and grandkids, but i'll never forget how her voice comforted me back then
i have been a "karen" fan since i was 6, so 30 yrs.........to hear her like this, she is the queen of female voices, the "Acapella" versions, just solidify it.......
This proves that Karen could have had a career as a singer as a solo act. Yes I know that Richard was the brains of the Carpenter's.. but Karen was the voice and heart... Someone would have heard her singing sooner or later and saw the raw talent and molded it...
@carpentersfan2010 molding it now; would bring more sadness to her since the music industry is influenced by "them". so, her history is a sweet tragedy for the best :(
Magnificent vocal performance. The song's obviously talking about depression of which she suffered on and off during her life. I suffer from depression as well so this song is both sad, yet poetic to me.
@almamatters2471 I'm glad. I have literally been listening to the Carpenters for 40 years. They were my introduction to music at eight years old. They will always be a part of me. Be well.
@SterlingRe you're so right, this song is extremely touching, so beautiful and sad at the same time. When simple words cannot express our sadness this kind of beautiful sounds can express them. Love Karen's feeling.
Acquaintances and friends thought I was a bit of a freak liking the Carpenters when everyone was listening to Cream and Hendrix. I feel validated seeing their staying-power. Beautiful and well-written songs with Richard's brilliant arrangements.
Thanks for these "clean" versions. Nice to hear it taken apart.
rainy days and mondays and karen carpenter always get me down!

I love that early 1970's bass. Sounds like "the sound" at that time that they used in other songs of that era. Miss it greatly!

@definitedoll yeah with the "hot" pick-ups so you can really hear the sound of the strings up against the frets.

@SterlingRe your words moved me. I suffer the same and when I listen to this record - or any of their records, honestly - I feel less alone. Cheers.

The great Tommy Morgan on harmonica - hard to hear on this track.
Just love the way bassist Joe Osborn gets down and frames Karen's vocal singing at the bottom of her range at 1:25.

i'd swear i can hear a little harmonica right at the very end
