When the embassy was seized, a large scale military operation(ie invasion) was out of the question because the end result would have been the Soviets invading across Iran's northern border which very likely could have touched off WW3. Your statement makes no sense at all. The weapons were used against Americans soon after and still are. The weapons were not given to Iran but Iraq. Carter is the reason why Iran is in such bad shape and why Iran poses a threat to the US by nuclear means. Carter's intentions were only to make money off creating a war which is basically what you stated and is true and always will be when the military industry has so much to offer the president in return of creating business.
Which weapons? Iraqi weapons in the 1991 war? Those were mostly French and Soviet. What the US gave Iran during Iran contra were spare parts for their old American weapons from the 1970s. Not new weapons. Yes, Carter gave us Iran today which is why he is the US worst President.

Carter was a primary reason there was a "successful" Iranian Revolution. He was also a reason the hostages were taken. Fuel shortages, he was not the only reason but he sure helped, and then screwed us by locking off certain domestic oil supplies. Even the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan was largely due to the USSR being confident that Carter stood for nothing. I just saw a documentary about that. Carter wouldn`t rescue the Shah, cause he was worried about the U.S. Embassy in Theran.After the coup he reduced the staff from hundreds to 40 people.Carter let the Shah in to America for medical treatment, and that was what led to the hostage crizes. The Iranians wanted him to send the Shah back to Iran, but Carter refused. The documentary is called "The Man Who Changed The World" and it`s on youtube. I`ve favourited it. I recomend it. A little historical context for everyone. When the embassy was seized, a large scale military operation(ie invasion) was out of the question because the end result would have been the Soviets invading across Iran's northern border which very likely could have touched off WW3. Carter's mistake was bowing to tremendous political pressure and letting the Shah in for cancer treatments. THAT outraged the Iranians and touched off the crisis.
Keep in mind that ALL of the hostages came home alive.

Beckwith (ret.), the founder and first commanding officer of Delta who was also the ground commander for the rescue op. However, the Military is the one to be blamed for the deaths of our valiant soldiers. They were the ones that told Carter they could do it so he went off of what he was told. It was not Carter's fault that they did not communicate and flew thru the sandstorm. it was not his fault there was a mechanical failure. It is not his fault the military did not make continegency plans for adverse weather that they should have foressen.

Regardless of how this mission turned out, we have to thank the members of the military for their bravery and in too many cases, the ultimate price, they paid for trying to free their fellow American citizens, from captivity. Thanks also to President Carter for having the character to admit and take responsibiltiy for the mission's eventual demise. Carter decided to be a good man before being a good president.

Carter did some good as well. The Camp David agreement between Israel and Egypt was a success, and has never been violated to this day. The Iranian situation wasn`t Carters fault. The shah brought himselft down. What is true is that Carter should have declared war on Iran when they attacked our embassy. I think Carter made a huge mistake there. He should have attacked Iran, and kicked the mullas out of Iran.

Ford lost because of the pardon. Before the pardon Fords approval rating was at 75%. Some people say he was right about the pardon, i disagree. It was a huge mistake and it cost Ford the presidency. Carter was a good man. I`m glad he tried to rescue the hostages. He had to. Because of Carter the hostages was released and none were killed or harmed! Even though the captures held them back until Reagan was president it was Carter that negotiated their release!

Iran/contras is even worse than Watergate! Nixon never wanted Ford as his VP. Reagan restored this county's economic and military standing that fell apart during Cater. Cater in 1980 won fewer Electoral Votes than Goldwater did in 1964. I have no problem with Iran/Contra. Your statement makes no sense at all. The weapons were used against Americans soon after and still are. The weapons were not given to Iran but Iraq. Carter is the reason why Iran is in such bad shape and why Iran poses a threat to the US by nuclear means. Carter's intentions were only to make money off creating a war which is basically what you stated and is true and always will be when the military industry has so much to offer the president in return of creating business.

Which weapons? Iraqi weapons in the 1991 war? Those were mostly French and Soviet. What the US gave Iran during Iran contra were spare parts for their old American weapons from the 1970s. Not new weapons. Yes, Carter gave us Iran today which is why he is the US worst President.

Truth is, this hostage crisis coinsided with the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Seems like the last "military muscle president" from the democrat party was JFK. He shined during the Cuban Missle Crisis. But the Bay of Pigs invasion was a failure. World leaders respected and feared the United States under the presidency of Ronald Reagan. The Soviets took advantage of Carter being meared down by this hostage crisis.

His attitude towards the military was lackluster at best, it was in terrible condition after his presidency. A well maintained military would have had a better chance at pulling this rescue off.

Carter definitely made mistakes, but I think people forget just how difficult this entire situation was, and how difficult those times were. I don't know of any President who this would have been an easy situation for. Carter, Reagan, Ford, Bush, Clinton, etc.

Absolutely, Carter had to deal with alot of shit including the Iranian Revolution, and takeover of the American embassy in Iran and holding of hostages by Iranian students, a failed rescue attempt of the hostages, serious fuel shortages, and the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan.

Carter was a primary reason there was a "successful" Iranian Revolution. He was also a reason the hostages were taken. Fuel shortages, he was not the only reason but he sure helped, and then screwed us by locking off certain domestic oil supplies. Even the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan was largely due to the USSR being confident that Carter stood for nothing. If Carter had been president during the 80s they probably would have invaded Poland to, Reagan threatened war if they did.

I just saw a documentary about that. Carter wouldn`t rescue the Shah, cause he was worried about the U.S. Embassy in Theran.After the coup he reduced the staff from hundreds to 40 people.Carter let the Shah in to America for medical treatment, and that was what led to the hostage crizes. The Iranians wanted him to send the Shah back to Iran, but Carter refused. The documentary is called "The Man Who Changed The World" and it`s on youtube. I`ve favourited it. I recomend it. It`s very interesting

Carter gave this news conference the day following the disaster, which is how the Iranians found out about the rescue attempt. No one knew of the mission, so no one knew of the accident, that is until Carter opened his mouth. As a result EVERY hostage was moved out of the Embassy, thereby ruining ANY the possibility of any future rescue attempts. Read "Guests of the Ayatollah"; this will explain it all, especially how much of a coward Carter was & how he appeased the terrorists for 444 days.
