I have also heard that the poles are a "no fly zone" for high altitude jet pilots also. Two reasons I can think of: there is something there that is secret that they are not allowed to see, such as a military bases or ruins. they used lon lat on 3d mesh so the polygons are drawn from a cylindrial pattern the black hole you see is just were the caps at each end connect to a single vertice so that if the vertice is out of magnification it is then culled from the 3d genometry when displaying lower LOD polygons on screen

geodesic genometry would fix both texture and black hole glitchs from happening ,but programmers got lazy and stuck with lon/lat cylindrical mesh so they could place the textures quicker

images(texture) are 2d so to get it onto a 3d surface it needs to be pinned to each corner on the 3d surface as quod (2 triangles joined as square)

pinning coordinates are called UV wraping U as horizontal and V as vertical

which are cylindrical grid pattern so the north and south poles/caps are distorded because the surface/polygons/plates/cells are triangles and not formed as quod(4 corners) but a geodesic sphere have all triangles paired into quods so no pole distortion happens

So how come the airlines have not reported any big holes when they fly over it every week or so. There has to be thousands of people fly over every year. Same for the South pole. They got research bases at the pole (I've been there) and believe me theres no hole just white snow and sky.
