what you're describing is being self absorbed and preoccupied with yourself. the "self-love" whitney houston is singing about is the love that allows one to think of themself in high esteem, respect themself, and have confidence in who they you are as individuals.
you do know the verse in the bible that says "love your neighbor as yourself" right? thats also a jesus quote mind you. why would jesus say that?

@espasole Loving yourself is having a sense of true conviction-You know what you are worth. Many of us have stumbled through this life. Many cannot believe or truly accept the Redemption and Salvation through Jesus Christ until we fully know that we were actually 'worth' saving.
It is not a selfish feeling to finally know that God loves you, and that the pain the Savior suffered was worth the price of your soul.
You cannot truly love others until you love yourself.

My answer would be yes. You cannot truly love anyone else until you love yourself. You may think you do, but it isn't as selfless once you realize that you yourself are 'worth it'. Many times people serve grudgingly, until they truly love

@espasole The reason Christ had to come was because we aren't perfect, and no unclean thing can stand before the presence of G-d. He would have lost all of us, we had to have a Savior, or we would never be able to return again.
I don't think you understand what it is to love yourself. Because you wouldn't have that notion of it being bad.
Loving yourself is a spiritual feeling, it is not grandiose or pompous; it is humbling and reverent. Some who boasts or is conceited - that isn't love.

@espasole IMO your wrong and I find this song very inspiring. After going through a divorce that was very difficult for me and feeling as low as I ever felt in my life, listening to this song something clicked in me and I realized that if one can't love themself then they can't love anyone else either and it changed my outlook on the way I look at things.
