@Fii12 The Potassium Permanganate is oxidising the sugar and being reduced itself and the change of colour is due to the oxidation state of the manganese: Mn(VII)O4- (purple) > Mn(VI)O4 2- (dark green) and so on through the colour changes as the manganese ion decreases in oxidation state

For the curious, no, you can't drink the clear liquid. It could change your stomach acid into saltwater. NaOH + HCl ---> H2O + NaCl, after all
