  • 2 of my friends in infantry were lucky enugh to get issued an m14, only difference was it had sage green synthetic stock. but it was a late 1960's reciever.

  • Ave. distance of enemy engagement dropped from WW II through Korea to Vietnam. Something like 400 yards to 150 yards and closer. No need for the larger caliber at those distances, meaning an infantry man could carry twice as much ammo. That was the win.

  • too damn heavy for South Vietnamese and Korean soldiers! wrong rifle to bring to us.

Just love .30 carbine or M4

    - For my life and only rifle I will pick Ak-47!

  • Incredible weapon, the fact that it can be field stripped without any tools, it's piston driven and is built around the KISS (Keep It Simple Stupid) philosophy, gotta love it.

  • Most Vietnamese soldiers did not like M-14 too clummsy and kick too much

Carbine .30 is the right one size for them

Even Tet offense, my father said most south Vietnamese soldiers pick up Carbine .30 vs AK-47 , to against with the communist and we always followed after the VC. They used AK-47 before us for a while before we had AR-15 which is semi auto!!!!

    - then the trouble M16A1 came...hate that gun so much! US and Vietnamese soldiers get killed alot because of this gun. Keep simple .30

  • @CharlieDoan I like the M14. My friend owned one. He improve the buttstock by using lighter woods component, and the result is awesome! The stock is about 1.5 lbs lighter, and the recoil is certainly pleasing. He sold it 2 years ago, however and that just sucks.

  • The M14 rifle has been in constant use since it first came our with NSW as well as other groups. I carried the M14, M16 and the CAR15 plus a few others. 9.3 pounds of raw stompinkilling power with accuracy and extended ranges over other service rifles in use today. The combat ranges are further out Han they used to be so having the M14 is a comfort!

  • @rivrat210 throw away M-14 and pick up Carbine .30 in Tet offense 1968 in Vietnam, tha my father said when end of M-14 and begin of M16A1!! Safety and depend his life in 1 rifle. To pick 1 of three, my father said:" Give me .30 Carbine, the WW 2 victory of American hero rifle" and he is right! most all friends of his get killed from American to all my uncles get killed from M16A1! If US soldiers can open cases to bring M16A1 to course please let us know. 3 uncle get killed 1967-1968

  • The Rifle with the shortest life as US main fighting gun. And for good reason. Mid WW2 technology and can only go so far. Most Americans would never admit M14 was a dud from the start. It was designed around the wrong cartridge, wich US pushed down NATO's collective throat and it was based on obsolete techology and ergonomics, everyone else already got rid of.

Had they adopted a FAL in .280 British, that everyone in NATO wanted, they would most likely still have them today.

  • @Jawzzy Good thoughts I wish the Americans think the same would be great.

  • wait a minute, so if this sear is located on every civilian firearm, does that mean if you sand it down your weapon will be fully automatic? hmmm......

  • @sladerfoster from what i have heard u can do it on the AK its more than likely u can do it to most other rifles as well

  • @sladerfoster yes but this change is ilegal in most countries

  • @sladerfoster If you sanded it down the hammer would just slide back forward with the bolt not striking the round. You need something to push the sear off after the rifle bolt has gone all the way forward. Which they used that long bar that tuged on a lever pushing the sear backwards releasing the hammer.

  • @sladerfoster No, u would need a "full auto sear", that releases the hammer after the bolt is closed, giving the hammer clear run. Turning semi auto into full auto is not anywhere close to be as easy as anti-gunners propose, Its definitely not kitchen or garrage job. A well equipped shop will be needed, and you cant really make the parts yourself, as the working surfaces require hardening.

  • This is a good video in my opinion, but not any better then GOOD. There are a couple areas this video needed to improve on. Such as:

At the beginning of the vidio, the soldiers demonstrating the M14 do not act at all in a professional soldierly manner. Doing things such as firing from the hip. A huge no-no of soldiering.

When showing how to strip the rifle for cleaning, it left out the removal & necessary cleaning of the gas piston.

Otherwise it's a well detailed look at a great American rifle.

  • this was filmed in Ft. Dix, NJ. i know exactly where they are LOL

  • Check these poor SOB's walking in a skirmish line, nothing like WW1 tactics!

  • @kapelusprime

Haha. Good one. And they have the right rifle to match the obsolete WW1 tactics.

  • I was looking at LP Live.. How'd I get here?

  • UBER-LIKE THIS VIDEO! I rarely say such things.

  • What's interesting is how long it took the US Army to answer the AK-47. The Soviets were also first to standardize ammunition across all of their squad weapon systems (AK, RPK, and AKR) with the 7.62x39mm round. That said, I like the M-14 for it's accuracy and power. In Vietnam it would have been my choice as it goes through bunkers, people, etc.

  • @yakfitguy It goes through people??? Man, that's dangerous!

  • suddenly my SKS seams really boring.

  • You gotta love vintage gun porn...

  • it never really replaced the M3 grease gun.

  • cleaning this gun starting from 6:30 is hell on your thumbs seriously

  • i always pinch my palm on the god damn fireing mechanism

  • i so want one of these motherfuckers..

  • @getsomeanthrax Yeah me too!

LOL fuck i shouldn't have watched this video i knew I'd end up wanting one too, the ammo is ridiculous expensive tho

  • *those

  • thsoe r like the quietest guns i've ever heard

  • Comment removed

  • @CoolasIce2 those are training cartridges or "blanks",used mostly for testing loading,extraction,locking..etc

  • @getsomeanthrax OK Thanks.

  • @CoolasIce2 Those are probably dummy rounds used for this video. They probably have flutes in the case so that they know which ones are dummy rounds.

  • @usaf4ever1824 OK Thanks.

  • good iven in the 1940 therv was parute bay

  • The M14 was an accurate rifle. It was built to provide accurate fire in engaging targets at long range. The knockdown power of round was more reliable than the tumbling action of the M16 round in disabling the target.

Automatic fire was best in two to three round bursts, full automatic in long bursts caused the muzzle to "climb" upward and to the left off aim.

The rifle was heavy, the magazines were heavy, it was not a weapon that could be easily used by small statured persons.

    I miss it.

  • test

  • ok this is a stupid question and I've researched for animations on this to, What is the difference between gas piston and direct impingment system (mechanicaly speaking) apparently not all ar 15' are DI... I've only shot bolt guns and would like to make a semi auto rig

  • @flufebunekilr all the original ar15 are di. di is gasses directly pushing against the bolt carrier, while others systems use a piston to push the bolt carrier. di guarantees less weight , but fouls more.

  • @claudiobenassi85 thank you, i just saw couple ar 15's with and without a spring in the stock, but one had an HAR conversion which opperated with a piston to bolt and a spring on the rod ontop of the barrel... thnx i gots it now:)

  • @flufebunekilr Recoil spring isn't connected to gas system, so it doesn't matter. Piston conversions might seem a good idea to solve issues, but most people seem to not know the ar system as much as I do and they buy the product. The main problem is unsolvable. And, it's caused by the bolt head cam friction against the body when the bolt is stripping a round. That is a real engineering flaw that got fixed in the later ar18, an entirely different platform (prismatic bolt). Take care.

  • Loved this weapon

  • i never knew the carbine could be used as an automatic......i thought it was just semi automatic gun....

  • You can just see from the field stripping segment on how they never mention anything like 'And be sure to always point the muzzle in a safe direction.'. Witch proves how crazy we've gotten about gun safety in the past 40 years, since there are so many idiots out there who don't know how to handle a gun and don't care to learn how. Yet they go out, buy an AR-15 and give all gun owners/shooters a bad name. Stupid assholes…

  • @FrozenKoolAidDude i think they assume common sence somthing so many idiots today dont have

  • @TheAlexagius The only ones who do are respectable shooters like Hickok45, TNOutdoors9 and any one else who's life practically revolves around shooting and would rather die than see the sport disgraced.

  • @FrozenKoolAidDude yeah its sad really that so many fools play with guns that as if they are toys, instead of responsibly using them, we can only hope they learn how to proberly partake in the sport

  • @TheAlexagius *Cough* *Cough* Thank you Call of Duty, Left 4 Dead, Gears of War, Halo, and any other video game with even semi realistic guns to teach these idiots about something they don't know a damn thing about. And then letting them walk around thinking they know everything about firearms when in reality, they actually know less than a milk carton. (At least the carton knows how it feels to be shot)

  • @FrozenKoolAidDude thats so true

  • @TheAlexagius And the real sad thing is, I'm dead serious, I've seen an 20 year old woman walk into Cabela's and ask for a 12 gauge for home defense. When asked if she's ever shot a gun before she answered "I've shot a .22 so this can't be much harder, can it?". The guy behind the counter looked like he wanted to hold the buttstock of a Mossberg 500 to her face and pull the trigger. And the other guy, I swear to God, a tear came to his eye.

  • @FrozenKoolAidDude yah always doing stupid shit like bump fire and just have the gun laying around somewhere

  • @ltveco8 And compare shit to Call of Duty. And the sad thing is, they think that just because they've played it in a video game, they think they know everything about the gun...

  • @FrozenKoolAidDude yea ik but i agree with denis leary. "people who shoot theyre eyes out are stupid! too dumb to get out of the way of the muzzle! they dont deserve eyes!"

  • @tippman2k01 THAT is good, man!

  • @FrozenKoolAidDude the military still takes weapon saftey as the first most imortant part of weapons handling ,it is practiced and stressed in our military daily since day one ..you will be kicked out for improper saftey .or even get your ass beat pending on who is around or what happened.im sure its the same with all militarys as its huge in ours(canadain forces).....civies ...yeah its up to the person ....

  • @coljohn23 Hey man, I'm all for firearm safety. I was just pointing out how they didn't overly-stress it in the video.

  • @FrozenKoolAidDude

I believe it's got to do with brains rather than gun safety per se. These days all frozen raw foods are labelled: "Cook Before Eating."

Even small appliances have warnings such as: "Do not use hair dryer while in the shower."

"always point the muzzle in a safe direction" LOL!!! Safe for whom??? Don't want to shut an enemy by pure accident?

  • @angelface22322 Safe as in away from your Sergeant.

  • @FrozenKoolAidDude

    LOL!!!

  • @angelface22322 Nice to know I made you laugh...

  • If this was a TV show, I'd buy the DVD set 'cuz, this is damn good!

  • my favorite rifle - M14 <3

  • very helpful

  • NO ES RIFLE ES FAL

  • that is really complicated, but now I know why gas operated gus are "stronger" than blowback operated weapons!

  • its a great rifle no doubt, but based on how simple and rugged this gun is, i just dont see how a 13-1400 price tag is warranted by springfield

if only other companies were able to produce them to allow more competition, much like the 1911's

  • The M-14 was a better weapon than the plastic wonder M-16. If I were in the bush I'd rather be armed with an 7.62mm NATO FN FAL or M-14 than an M-16 firing the piddling 5.56mm round that was originally designed to shoot vermin and other small game.

  • @talbot5445 it all matters on the situations

  • i have the feeling that not a single soldier switched on the safety when changing mags.

  • @DocThrobulator When they were getting shot at they probably didn't because they need to be fast just at least make sure its pointed in a safe direction like towards the sky or at the enemies.

  • i have the feeling that not a single soldier switched on the safety when changing mags.

  • .

    .

Oh, how I miss Sergeant Stuart Queen. He always said it best.

    .

    .

  • I always knew I was saying the word Carbine wrong, me and every other idiot with an m4 carbine. thanks for the vid! and the schooling!

  • @Bingstock i think he just says it oddly, never heard it pronounced carbon before, only ever car-bean or car-bine

probably be best to check the old dictionary

  • Its quite possible I would have sex with this rifle, I'm sure I'd get so horny in the vicinity of it I'd be able to rape my way into the barrel, failing that my next target would be the trigger cavity.

  • They need to do these old-school style videos for the more modern weapons and pieces of equipment.

  • DI anybody realized that the full auto recoil that the guys in there were controlling came from BLANKS??

  • cool

  • lol i'm making a model of it for airsoft =D (i rather make a gun more realalistic than buying a crappy one)

  • One of the dislikes is from Mikhail Kalashnikov :P

  • The Grease Gun is down right ugly. I know it was developed as a cheaper version of the Thompson but come on people, at least give it a handguard.

  • I got mine!

  • Wow... at the time, the US army really put some thought into this one. Never realized it until now.

  • PTRS > SKS> M1>M14 > M16 >AR15

  • @alen209 The M16 is a AR-15...

  • @alen209 The M16 is a AR-15...And so is the M4 and M4A1

  • @TheReviewAirsoft your an idiot. Im showing how the semi automatic rifle evolved

  • @alen209 I'm actually not an "Idiot" i just pointed out that you messed up a little.Don't have to go and be a dick.

  • Hey wasnt that Oliver North at 23.05 doing the full auto?

  • Why did the DoD think it would be a good idea for 1 gun to fulfill the role of 4 guns?

  • @Xelna1138 Money.... it's cheaper for 1 gun (in theory) to do 3 or 4 roles than 3 or 4 guns doing one thing. It seldom works however as now you have one gun that does 3 things just ok or i not well at all instead of 3 guns doing their jobs very well.

  • @Xelna1138 The same reason they didn't adopt the FN FAL, or the .280 British.

    Logistics.

  • This is what we should have given our troops since Korea...and kept it!

  • Nice! i got to be number 200 in likes! just got mine today- what a rifle!

  • Thanks so much for uploading this!

  • AR-10, even with direct impingement is more reliable and more accurate.

  • Mine is in California Gun Jail. Can't wait to bring it home!

  • America fucked up when they got rid of this rifle

  • @Gunnut321 Dunno if id´s say that for just getting rid of the M14, but the whole dabacle with the early M-16 to replace it was a major FUBAR.

Don´t get me wrong, the M14 is a good, i´d even say excellent, rifle. And the M-16 has grown into a decent rifle. But the M14 had some disadvantages it realy could do without. And the M-16 is (from what i hear) still sensitive as hell.

With the new EBR modifications, it would seem most of the M14 issues has been adressed.

  • @BigSwede7403 see there were only 3 problems about the M14 they say

    1. heavy at 12.7 lbs so they say (really its not, i've held and used one before its not that bad)

    2. ammo is too heavy to carry (why shoot 3 rounds when 1 can do the job) 5.56(223) vs 7.62X3(308)

    3. uncontrollable fully auto (thats why they made modifacations like the EBR Chassy and Troy Chassy)

yea they didn't get rid of it but y use somthin unreliable to replace somthin

  • @Gunnut321 Exactly. And most of those are adressed in the EBR i´ve heard. And a few other minor things, like location of fire mode selector.

IMO, the 5.56mm platform should have been reserved for operators that _realy_ need small, light weapons for self defense or portability. Say vehicle crews, scouting units and maybe some spec-ops. The 7.62mm is way more usefull for front-line duty as it can reach out and punch through obstacles.

  • @BigSwede7403 I just about to make that same comment. I totally agree with you since it was specops that had favor w/ it.

  • @Gunnut321 - actually, the M-14 has a 4th flaw. The bolt roller is held on by a cheap c-clip. If anything causes the roller to bind in the op-rod during functioning and it pops off the bolt - the gun is inoperable requiring a special tool to fix. When Ruger developed the Mini-14, he changed this and made the bolt roller a solid piece on the bolt assembly.

  • @Gunnut321 I agree. Besides, automatic is only really useful for increasing the chances of wounding a target when you're panicked. So if its uncontrollable, well... Who cares. The troops in this video were fine firing it in bursts, so what's the problem? A burst is generally far more accurate than full-auto, and you still get a good volume of fire out.

All this stuff about suppression is a crock of shit, you can keep a mans head down with a semi-automatic weapon just as well as an automatic one.

  • @Gunnut321 Its still in use brother!

  • @WheelsOfJudgement

i no but its not in segnificant amounts

  • @Gunnut321 ur right but it is still used the m21 is based of the legendary m14

  • @Gunnut321 SEAL Teams still use the tactical version...

  • @Gunnut321 This is the gun that the Gaurds at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier use.

  • @Gunnut321 well they were brought back, just modernized a little

  • @Gunnut321 Not necesarily, although early M16 variants had issues the modern ones are very reliable. Not to mention the the cartridges are lighter, along with the gun as well.

  • @Gunnut321 They are still using it as a DMR

  • @Gunnut321 they never got rid of it. we still use it today

  • This will replace all these rifles. Those were some high standards. Talk about a lot of innovation.

  • The grease gun was one cheaply made piece of...AWESOMENESS!!!

  • it's so painful to watch a gun be completely taken apart! <\3

  • i used a wood m14 in iraq that rifle kicks so much ass it should have feet

  • whats with the grooves on the shells of the bullets?

  • @billymayer1000

They're dummy rounds for demonstration purposes.

  • @sjstill thanks, now, what is the purpose of the grooves?

  • this is awesome

  • lightweight? ha

  • Carbon? Wow, I didn't know a class of weapons had the same name as an element.

Also, assuming a single rifle can replace four types of weapon. Oh US Army, you so crazy.

  • @saltedfish10mm theres nothing wrong with that, us army is great

  • すばらしい!

  • @KIM33873387 eh! honto ni subarashii desu ne~

  • shees a 7.62 death dealer m16 aint got shit on it

  • @devilsmarksman damn skippy same with the goddamn 92F and the 1911

  • this really is well done. The lighting and cinematography is perfect. The image is unfaded and well preserved. The subject matter is very interesting. I wish they had a similar video for the m79 40mm weapon.

  • i hate people who pronounce carbine like carbin

  • @devilsmarksman its ever worst with car been

  • @FrankieJames7 yeah i hate them too

  • @riseld4 YES! CARBINE!BITCH! not gay car-been

  • Yea. You're sure as hell right there. The Military Police were using the Tommy gun before and during the Vietnam war as well as the ARVN.

  • the two people hate this video is certified "pussys"

  • You know what? The Grease gun did stay in service longer than the Tommy Gun. But the Thompson wasn't replaced by the Grease gun. There were other American made machine guns besides the Grease gun after the Vietnam war. I maybe goin a lil too far up. Sorry 'bout that.

  • Not likely. It was still in active service until the beginning of the Vietnam War besides the Grease Gun.

  • M14 is for real men.

  • I never knew that they could be loaded with stripper clips

  • When the narrator said that in time, the M-14 would replace the Garand, the Grease gun, the BAR, and the Carbine, he forgot to mention about the Thompson Submachine gun. That was a great gun. I don't know why the narrator didn't talk about that.

  • @MegaConmaster Didn't the Grease gun sort of replace the Thompson?

  • @MrThomPS3 The Grease Gun was designed during ww2 to be a cheaper to manufacture than the Tommy Gun, but acted as a stop gap only. Its firing rate was half that of the Tommy Gun.

  • @MarvelousSeven And worse, troops hate it. I would hand a Thompson to an American troop at the time and they're gonna kiss me real hard. But if I hand them a grease gun and tell them to face the enemy, they'll tell me to go to hell.

  • @MegaConmaster Tommy was used by Recon forces, ARVNs, Advisors and more likely to be US troops in Vietnam.

  • Wow! in just 27 minutes we learnt about almost every single part in the rifle.

  • watched the whole thing, now i will watch all of M60 and M16...

this is actually kinda cool to see the stuff they showed the soldiers in WWII and Vietnam

  • any country could have the best weapons but are not smart enough to use them right, when the war was going on in my country(el salvador)the guerrillas almost won the war with home made weapons and bombs, the military had usa weapons,m60,m16 etc

you could own an atomic bomb and if you don't have experience with it,you could destroy your own country, the smartest one will always win,a good example is the war between the france and mexico(5 de mayo)

  • from the opening frame I thought this was going to be a Looney_Tunes cartoon. Kidding. Superb rifle.

  • That was pretty interesting, these old films are so much better at explaining things than all this CGI crap you get nowerdays.

  • Comment removed

  • That's a man's gun!

  • @cgarvinify mosin nagant is the most man gun of all, but still this gun is cool, but i still like the garand more, but my dad lost the clip as it pinged out of the magazine into the river

  • @cgarvinify a ruger 10 22 is every mans gun =)

  • @cgarvinify just like all other weapons ^.^

  • Blackeho WTF the wokden weapons are way more reliable in wet conditikns look at the ak 47 it went through vietnam with a bang and the m14 also was very reliable unlike the m16 if you think the wood will get soggy it wont uts laminated

  • btw i'm surprised i didn't see any "Americans..." comments or "German weapons/AK47 are better" or MW2 comments :)

  • awesome

  • @Paul37888

    What he said.

  • It's great but is putting me to sleep.zzzzzzzzzzz

  • I like old vintage military rifles with wooden bodies and stocks. I know they are heavier, but it looks so much better. Plastic looks cheap and flimsy. My favorites are M 1 garands, M 14, FG 41. The last one being a pretty cool gun.

  • @wuIfshelmut i like wooden rifles too, but their not as reliable as plastic rifles in "wet" environments such as vietnam.

  • @BlackEcho24 exactly how is that?how does the stock affect reliability?

  • @Thewestcoastshooter

it does not affect reliability as we know the M1 Garand was an extremely reliable weapon just like any other wood stock weapon.

What he probably meant if not completely miss informed, is that wood stocks are not as accurate. They were not as accurate in Vietnam because of the humidity and water. Wood stocks have a tenancy to warp and twist causing the rifle to change point of aim when free floating a barrel, hence the use of Synthetic Fiberglass NOT plastic stocks.

  • its good to see a old 50's video, even one showing a good takedown,

  • Very cool.
