Strange, those were the exact words used to describe the first airplanes, not so useless now, are they. Most new technologies start out very expensive and seemingly useless until there development matures. I hope you are not suggesting that we stop creativity just because the first prototypes are not flawless.

This looks like an early prototype model of Sony's QRIO model robot. Notice there are no fingers and the rigid joints of this model. Also the dancing is pretty rough. Some day all of us will have one of these...If the price come down...
