What the hell was up with Mego? I swear they damn near made some of the coolest freak'n toys around! I bet the profit margin was low though. You can tell that a lot of the toys in the Star Trek series, were semi-cutting edge for the 1970's, plus intricate & expensive to produce. As a kid in the late 70's, I had the Treculator (digital LED calculator/tricorder). Back then digital calculators weren't as wide spread as they are now. I love Mego stuff!
I once owned a Japanese rip-off of Vincent. It had a keyboard on top of it's head so as to pre-program it's movement. I don't remember the name of the company that made it, or what they titled the robot as.
That toy was very expensive for my parents to buy for me. I wanted it. I wanted to model kit too and that was a no. So 25 years later i manage to get the kit.
Yeah" The Black Hole was pretty much very under appreciated "But" had a damn good cast. Ernest Borgnine as "Booth" Maximillian Shell, And The one and only Anthony Perkins and many others. These toys are very difficult to find, Very. I still have the promotional comic book somewhere.
Too bad MEGO scrapped this one. It was deemed too expensive. Only one is know to exist. It is worth almost 5K. I don't see how they could make this commercial and NEVER take this toy to market.
did this toy ever make it to market? that would have been cool to own, all i had was a lil action figure of him, either that or maximillan, i forget which one i got and my brother got, oh well, vincent was a cool droid/robot, he had an attitude, like r2, atleast you could understand what he was saying, but r2 gets all the love
Even though the Black Hole was a flop, the VINcent robot toy was a must have. Too bad Mego fowled before any of it was produce. And also the Star Wars line was meant for Kenner. Mego would have only made a few characters and would have zero accesories.
I worked in the toy industry for about 8 years. Rumor has it that this is the toy that killed Mego off. I think the prototype cost $1 million for this one and a "Maximillian" robot toy.
That's the best part of the story, the prototypes were so expensive, Mego wasn't doing well anyway, and the Black Hole didn't do well so Mego went out of business before the toys were ever mass produced and sold.
Is it true that turning down the "Star Wars" liscense was pretty much the beginning of the end for MEGO? And that Buck Rogers, Star Trek TMP and Black Hole were desperate last ditch attempts to compete?
nice. hahahae.

It's a toy fair promotion piece, if they made the toy they would have trimmed this and put it on TV

MEGO was approached to do the toys for Star Wars and they turned it down. I think that's why they embraced this movie.
