@clo662 nice man mine only make it to 160k before the engine blew up, but hey i beat the shit out of it and it had no no oil pressure for the last 50k miles, all i can say is there one tough suv!
I hate it when people trash talk Jeeps. My ZJ is 15 years old, and it is still running strong. I take pride in my country, and in my Jeep. I may be getting 12 MPG, but I've got torque, off-roading ability, and the tendency to smoke ricers at red lights. Peace out. O||||||||O
I have a 1994 jeep grand cherokee and i have almost the same problem and i know for sure its not slipping. if i am going 20 mph my jeep will shift back and forth from 1st to 2nd. i think its a shift solenoid, but not sure.
mine does that too between 2nd and 3rd if i take off slow but if i womp on it it dont do it and this is after my tranny fluid and filter change. If you dont mind me asking how much was it to repair it? thanx
both of my cherokees had transmission problums it was the 1st gear cluch pack in my 95 cherokee 4wd trans went out at 250000,, the trans went out of my 97 2wd at 105000,, jeep's automadic transmissions just are not all that great. if you want one to last for ever try the ax15 5 speed came in alot of jeeps with the 4.0

I ♥ Jeep !!! , Jeje I Have One Just Like This One... But Excuse Me @smallz1975 , I'm not very knowledge About cars, So My Questions is, What th Problem In The Transmision?
If your trying to find a problem pussy footing and driving like grama is not the way dude. Romp the gas pedal to the floor then you'll know if the tyranny is slipping geez. i hate people that are like whats this issue an drive like thier gonna break thier car. Guess what no matter you beat the living fuxk out of the car or drive like an old woman its still gonna break!
@FinalRanger first off flooring it will make it will make the slipping worse and break faster and will put wear on the engine but whatever this truck is dead anyways 40k miles later!
@smallz1975 My Grand Cherokee has 220,000 on the original motor, I beat the shit out of it and it's still running... But I guess thats just my luck bcuz my Dakota has 260,000 on the original motor, and still running.
@FinalRanger So that's how you would do it? I would change filter and fluid first. Driving like an asshole or old woman is not gonna make you see what is wrong. It is either slipping or not. I worked on Transmissions for 20 years.
I Had a 95 Grand Cherokee had 223000 miles and they work wonders had it when it had 102000 miles never change the transmission fluid and didnt give no problems sold it and is still running jeep are good.
For everywhere here who's having tranny issues. My 96 Grand Cherokee 4.0L has 192,000 miles on the original engine and trans. of course the 4.0 is as strong as ever. When i bought the jeep it had an intermittent problem, of starting in 2nd gear and not shifting into overdrive, so 2nd and 3rd only. i checked the usual GP sol. and switch, no problems. the simple solution was a bad ground wire on the battery.(full of corrosion) thus the tcm wasn't getting a good ground causing intermittent probs.
@svtlincoln God damn do you own any kind of nice car at all? Seems like everything you drive has almost 200k miles... It must suck being a broke ass redneck!
@slow unlike you jr. i don't live with my mommy. i have big boy things like a mortgage and bills to pay. i prefer used vehicles, i like to work on my own things and prefer to avoid a $800 car payment. and i bought my jeep just for the 4x4 to take on my fishin trips, no need for a brand new 4x4 just for occasional needs. my being frugile is why i have my 4x4 and the lincoln you love to hate. plus about 20k in the bank and a 9sec car in the garage. yea poor me. what lil i have at the age of 25.
@slowmontecarlo I've got 160k on my 5.9 GC, and I guarantee I could smoke that POS monte you're driving. yes, I saw your "drag" videos, and I'm not impressed. My GC in 4x4, with 32x11.50's still pulls sub 6 second 0-60's and sub 12 second quarters @121... Oh, and I don't need a lame ass supercharger... and the jeep looks a lot better than that ugly maroon turd you're driving.
@mryesterday Thanks for watching my videos! Your Grand Cherokee does not run 12s BTW... 121 MPH? Right? You expect me to believe that? That trap in that truck would probally be good for 10s your not fooling anyone here, sorry.
I just bought a 94 GC Limited w/ quadra trac, from a guy who said it has an intermitent thumping under the driver seat (transfer case ?) at 30 mph & up after it warms up. First off, none of the tires match. "oops"
That's a no no for quadra tracs. It has 140k on it. The viscous coupler in the transfer cases has been known to burn up on these models due to mismatched tires. Also, make sure the trans fluid is Dex II / 7176.
Hi I have 1996 Jeep grand cherokee, 6 cylindre 4.o liter, having problem with reverse shifting , is making noise and grinding noise when shift but is ok in 1,2 and drive may be tranfer case or transmission , just got this truck and aI see this problem ,any ideas to fix this truck will apreaciate it thanks ?
When it slips between 2 and 3 sometimes the front band is worn down the front drum releases before the third gear clutches apply.Hopefully you can adjust the front band to fix it.if you make it too tight you could ruin the front band.Turn the front band bolt in till it starts to snug then back it out a couple of turns.but check the book to be sure.If that doesnt work a schiesty mechanic is probably your best bet.Have them run a check, they can tell you a few things before they gut your car.
slipping can be from many reasons, but Cherokees plug coolers have yoour tech undo the lines and blow air though to make sure. Have had a few major failure hard to say if the cooler plugged then the trans blew up or if the trans blew up and plugged the cooler. Good luck
I have the same problem with the same jeep. The only difference in my case is that the tranny 'buzzes' inbetween third and fourth. Sorry that I cannot help, I'm trying to figure it out myself without having to go to a Scheisty mechanic. Good luck!
I have a 2WD '98 ZJ with a 4.0L and it just slipped from overdrive at 65mph down to 3rd gear and the RPM's shot from 2100 to 3000. Then it activated the CE light (output speed sensor code). Tech changed the sensor and cleared the code but I might need a new trans. 145K miles.
I had the same problem with my 94 grand cherokee. since you have the 5.2L engine you have the 42RE transmission which has electric control shifting. So its not a vacuum problem. Just get a can of sea foam transmission tune up and add the whole can to it. I promise you will see a difference. I went to WyoTech and know exactly whats in your transmission and know exactly how to rebuild them and you clutches are just slipping a little. The sea foam will add friction to them and add life.
I had the same problem with my 94 Jeep Grand Cherokee. Around tight corners it would shift down and rev then immediately shift back up. I drained the tranny fluid and replaced it and it works fine. Has 265,700 miles on it and the engine runs like a top.
my 1993 ZJ V8 has 192k on it and has never had any issues. All ive ever done is a transmission flush and adjusted the front and rear bands. Buy the MOPAR shop manual!, I cant stress this enough. Many good diagnostic charts and interesting technical bits.
As of 11/13/08 it has been fixed i changed the fluid twice and changed out the governor pressure switch and fixed the problem The trans has shifts strong no tweaking in between gears and no slipping what so ever. The Truck has now 137,000 Miles on it and is running strong
whenever i make a left turn in my jeep..it seems to go out of gear then takes a few seconds for it to go back into great..and when i make a full stop then start up again it jerks really bad. what would cause that?
My 94 had the same problem when making left turns, caused me to be hit in the drivers door at about 50 miles an hour. It held up like a champ tho and nobody was hurt even tho both vehicles were totaled...needless to say I'd love to know what causes this.
change the fluid i had the same problem soon as i did it was fixed there was like residue on the tranny magnet or watever and the fluid was bl;ack instead of red
HEY I CAN HELP!!!! Mine was doing stuff like that. I took it to jeep and got tranmission flushed. While I was there they told me there was an input sensor and output sensor on the transmission that wasn't acting properly. You can pick them up at local Jeep dealership for around $25.oo it fixed mine. They are simple to replace, dont pay them to do it.
holy fuck i juust bought me a 98 grand and i got that same fuking prblem its not all t he time though only once and a while another problem is the car doesnt always know its in park so i have to her in neutral thenstart er up pisses me off anyone got oipions as what to do if i get it fixed will that shit come back?
mine had some shit like that too, something like the running clutch was stuck and it wouldnt go into reverse either.. got a new one put in for cheap.. it still slips 1st to 2nd
yeah, seeing the transmission malfunction or break on a grand cherokee like this one is almost a daily event, but with the xj mine has 200k and everything works perfect, my friends xj has 400k miles on the original trans with no work done to it at all and a rebuilt engine.
I wish chrysler would start making the xj again but just leave it like when AMC made it, I know I'd buy one along with a few hundred other people Iv met.
i have a 97 jeep grand cherokee and the transmission went at 105 and the rear end is fucked too i bought it for cheap tho the guy prolly never changed the tanny fluid
The 55 thousand mile run with out a fluid change as fried your transmission. Take out the transmission fluid dipstick, and see if the fluid is very dark and smells burnt. You have 4 Choices now,
i had a 93 that pretty much welded the overdrive together and it would run about 3500rpm at about 70-80mph. that tranny lasted 170,000 miles, and it was beat to shit, literally. so i think they have pretty tough trannys. i just got a 97 and it does what yours does, a friend said the same thing about the sensor. ill probably switch it out soon and ill let you know if it worked.
I have the same make/model/year.When it's in drive now,it won't shift into final gear so it only goes about 40.If I drive it for several minutes in drive it slips out of gear and I have to put in in 2nd to keep moving.I brought it to a trans place that put it on a computer and they say they don't have the error specs for jeep. That jeep won't give them out.went to jeep and they sound like crooks.Interested in installing a brand new transmission and asking questions later...HELP
are you trying to show us premature upshifting? if so I had this problem with a Cherokee in the past. Tranny shops kept saying it needed a rebuild. Reluctance to spend that money lead me to seek multiple opinions. Finally a Jeep specialist told me it was just the TPS sensor. Apparently the TPS sensor is involved in upshifting in addition to the physical cable connecting accelerator to tranny. Part is about $120 and takes no time at all to change. good luck.
I had this problem, check the liquid of transmission, is a rod that this in the engine, as that of the oil, but it has one gear, The problem disappeared, my Grandcherokee is 94
The trannys in those only are sopposed to last 80k miles, mine gave out around 105,000 never fixed it, i just left it in my garage, love it to much to get rid of it, but love my subaru to much to fix it, lol.
jsut keep an eye on it my 2002 ford explorer jsut had to get a brand new tranny put it cuz the reg one exploded in my car it only had 45000 miles on it and my car was doin the same thing urs is so be careful
I stopped by the shop that the Jeep was serviced at several times i had the mechanic look my jeep up on the computer and says that the transmission fluid was changed at 75,000 so its over due which i think is causing it.
Try changing the filter and fluid first a lot of times the trans in Chrysler products start to act funny when the fluid gets dirty. I'm guessing your vehicle uses ATF+3 or ATF+4? Try that first if not rebuild.
drain it our 98 wrangler has had this problem one and it was fixed for about 1 1/2 years now its come back

the cast iron seals in your tranny have warped. this was a big problem for the auto trannies on GC's. you can't really do anything about it except
a) replace the seals
b) buy a new tranny (same problem will eventually occur)
c) buy a rebuilt tranny w/updated Stainless steel seals.

i had a 93 that pretty much welded the overdrive together and it would run about 3500rpm at about 70-80mph. that tranny lasted 170,000 miles, and it was beat to shit, literally. so i think they have pretty tough trannys. i just got a 97 and it does what yours does, a friend said the same thing about the sensor. ill probably switch it out soon and ill let you know if it worked.

Part is about $120 and takes no time at all to change. good luck.

I think it's that music you're listening to. Looking at your odometer, that's about when my tranny shit out on me too, time for a rebuilt.
