I wonder if I've seen that car, I used to live near the Mansell museum where he had a ton of the cars he drove, epic driver though. Those cars were insane.
Mansell has had it all, hes suffered real bad burns to his ass, he nearly killed himself at Suzuka and passed out in the 1984 Dallas GP aswell as having a tyre blow out at 215mph at Adelaide in '86. He showed real dedication by winning the championship in 1992 after all his bad luck, but he deserved and should have many more. He makes me proud to be British!
Monaco is like a 5yr old designing a COD map.... its history is superb (when cars where primitive) but lets move on and chuck it in the harbour... oh sorry thats where all the deals are done.
@SuperClagnut Well, this is where all the deals are done now... But 80 years ago, they were "nothing" around there. The town did growth a lot, and I mean a lot. The track is really similar, Nuvolari will have problem after the race and he will still wonder "where the fuck am I?"
what is crazy about this is that it feels slow to me :( having played tons of F1 challenge on PC I've driven faster than this virtually.......Kind of trippy to think that during this era these were as fast as it gets.......I did notice how raw the engine and shifting was...just look at the INSANE burnout off the line!
@floodo1 Ok, so if you had the chance to drive this car for a week.. including a couple of days testing at monaco. Do you think you could get within 5 secs of nigels time.
@doubts probably not....but the d00ds who transitioned from the GT (gran turismo) Academy to real life cars suggest maybe.
I doubt my neck and body could stand up to it, but maybe my reflexes could, or maybe I could in a more modern car. Who knows?
Mansell is a god, and what I'm saying is that it's crazy how fast cars are nowadays compared to back in the day, NOT that back in the day the drivers sucked......S
It is prestigious granted, but to be honest i cannot remember the last Monaco GP that i actually enjoyed watching! And that is from a die hard F1 fan.
Personally I think wins at Spa-Francorchamps is more prestigious. As far as racing is concerned the place isn't really suited for racing. Even the first race there in 1929 the drivers complained the place was much too cramped and ill suited for Grand Prix racing.
Indy 500 is still the "greatest race in the world".
Jim Clark never won in Monaco, neither did Mansell, Piquet, Alan Jones, Emerson Fittipaldi, Mario Andretti, James Hunt and other champions.
@McLarenMercedes it depends on what you mean by presitgious.......prestigious in general, on the world stage, then monaco hands down. prestigious to race fans, then probably spa. prestigious to ferrari fans, then probably monza :) prestigious to the brits, then probably silverstone.
Monaco gets an extra level of prestige in my mind for being so tight, and for being so tucked into a city. Winning Monaco doesn't make you the best, but it certanly makes you special :)
What a sound.... His hand speed was tremendous and, like all the great drivers, he set the car up on the ragged edge knowing he could catch just about anything! But I'd forgotten just how small the wheel was in Mansell's car!
awsome stuff. miss it! the Williams was a real handfull, and mansel makes it look easy to drive. it was easier to drive than the ferrari though. a better balanced car. it still amazes me that they managed to get into 6th for 135ish up the hill, on that awful twitchy surface, and simply lifting for turn 2 to carry enough speed through in 5th then 4th at the apex on slicks!! with zero traction control or abs not hitting the barrier....All about throttle control then.. real mens cars! just awsome!!
This is from 1991, Mansell started from 5th place and finished 2nd. Senna is of course the pole sitter in the McLaren. you can clearly see his Marlboro livery in the hairpin.
@schest23 i wishthat so many things were like they were before..... past is past i wish senna was here too stop complaining of f1 today, you all speak like the drivers of today are studid and have no skills lool go drive an f1 from today or 40 years old what ever, enjoy the sport.
if you were an f1 driver will you like that some one have your atitude?
Yes, you right when i see some old racing battles it goes in my head with out thinking "i wish this was today"
its good to express if soomething is going wrong or what ever but yes today the sport is a safer sport, in the back days they were kamikazi´s evolution can not be stopped.
its cool to say that senna will allways be the best.
what i dont like is the people that attack the rules of today with so much anger, they dont think in security they speak random
@DoctorNumber46 yeah i loved these side mounted cams WAY more than the top mounted ones. Taking you that extra foot above track level really kills the feeling of speed you get from vids like this.
@nitrotrigger Not all French V10s were good in F1, just the Renault ones. The Peugeot one was relatively crap in F1, it produced no victories from 1994 to 1997, the closest it got was 2nd at Monaco '94 (Brundle), Belgium '94 (Hakkinen), Canada '95 (Barrichello), and Belgium '97 (Fisichella). It was also incredibly unreliable in F1, but in the 905 it won Le Mans in 1992 and 1993.
Having seen Senna here in Adelaide between 1985 and 1993, I can attest to him being a real racer and while he may not have been the most popular among his fellow drivers, he was a fan favourite with almost all F1 fans. He was a supreme qualifier (65 poles in 162 races) and a great 3 time World Champion with 41 wins and 80 podiums.
6 wins and 25 podiums came before he joined McLaren Honda in 1988, in cars not considered the class of the field.
Gotta love the sound of that Renault V10. As for the below comments, Senna & G. VIlleneuve (before his death) were among the fastest racers during the 80s, Prost, Armoux, K. Rosberg and Mansell were also great drivers too. It's sad to how little some of you know, seriously what a tosser for calling Senna "not a racer". I've been watching F1 since the late 70's.
Hamilton & Vettel are very bright drivers, regardless of what car they have.

yes Piquet better than Prost and Senna and he never have the best car....if Piquet go to mc laren (Prost didnt want that)he probably be champion 88...just remember only Piquet broke the consecutive Prost 85 86wcup with his own team favored to Mansell...
@flipsidedogchop yes favoured like86 mansell rode and didnt like "active suspension"....Honda supported there cause he was the champ, but really the real interesting for honda was Mclaren....honda was very near in team box seeing prost and senna test.......and Piquet never like practice or test;the Lotus was too slowly that year...and mclaren won 15 of 16 certanly....its true????
yes he did move slightly but he did whats called a moving start which where aloud back then not quite sure what it is thou i think u ca n move but not so far foward that you go out beyond your grid position area box thingy lol
ha ha, I bet he would never admit it, but mansel almost blew it before lining up on his marks. he stalls the engine at 0.09, but just manages to re-engage the clutch before it dies completely!!!
Actually, he did. Glock and Hamilton were best buddies before they moved up to F1, and they obviously still are. You have to admit, it was very "Hollywood" the way he won, with someone going off the track right at the last corner, gifting him the win. Exciting, maybe, but a co-incidence? Nah.
Hamilton was overhyped last year, the way the commentators never shut up about him made me sick, and now where is he? Stuck at the back, while Denseon Button gets his dick sucked by the press.
What a silly comment Vambo. I knew 3 young karters who were as good as Lewis, but they did not get the McLaren package. You clearly know nothing about what went on.
We already know where Hamilton stands. Useless, unless he's in the best car, and handed the World Championship by Glock, after screwing up time after time..
By the way, he only got the McLaren drive cos he is black. Ron knew it would be a great publicity coup and he was right.
Anti-Hamilton are we? Shame. That in itself just values your opinions worthless and are just wasting your time even posting here. For the record, I'm British and I support Raikkonen (at the moment) but without fact, you're nothing, there are far too many of where you came from, and it ruins the sport.
Oh, and incase it has escaped your notice, this is an onboard from Nigel Mansell in 1991, a real era in the sport, not the oh-so-monotonous races of today where overtaking is only in the pits.
No I'm not anti-Hamilton. I just know that if he was truly great he would not be at the back, even in a poor car. Senna would never have been at the back, even in a car with 3 wheels.
And yes the 90s were a great era. I've been watching since the 70s though so I probably know more about F1 than you.
Add to that the 2 seasons of British Formula Ford I did, and I don't consider my opinions about racing worthless. What makes you an expert then?
I don't consider myself an expert, I just feel it's necessary to point out your deluded fanatical views, since it is pretty childish, IMO.
And no, Senna would not be at the front in a slow car, look at the competitiveness today, drivers are robots with diets that will only contribute to their progression as a driver. Today, drivers aren't losing much time at all, probably tenth each lap. Besides, Senna was a qualifier, not a racer, incredible speed, but IMO, Prost was more efficient in a race.
OK, perhaps I worded it wrong, but he is not God. In comparison to his qualifying performances, his racing abilities weren't great, IMO, that's all.
OK, so if you're not at the back, where are you? That's a rather pointless 'hypothesis' seenas Senna is dead (and gets 5x more fans) and times have changed dramatically since his death, I doubt even he could get a Force India into the points or at least challenge for points.
I think you misunderstood what I said. Senna was amazing in qualifying, always outshone his team-mates, even Prost. But when it got to the race, Prost was better, because he could conserve the car, conserve his tyres and conserve his fuel (cars had limited fuel back then). Whereas Senna was quite aggressive on his car, so when he needed to settle down for a race, some of his speed was lost. Nevertheless, he still did great to beat Prost on occasions.
You really , don't know what are you talking about. He was the famoust and considered the best driver (also in numbers) before he died according to his average,Wins,Poles etc en 9 F1 racing years.
HE took Toleman to the podium and the last victories from Lotus or Mclaren in years.
OK, If you're going to insult me, I'll lead you to another event. 1985 San Marino Grand Prix, the cars had limited fuel, Senna and Johansen drove very fast, but also used a lot of boost and inevitably ran out of fuel, whereas Prost drove carefully, and made it to the end of the race. I can agree that Senna was probably the fastest champion of all time, I'm a great admirer of what he achieved with Toleman, Lotus, McLaren and Williams but I think Prost was just as good when it mattered, the race.
Well, I'm brazilian, and I race kart some times with friends of mine whom used to compeate in pro leagues. They say I'm fast for a guy who raced just a few times. What I know about karting in the rain with worn slicks... well, is very difficult to mantain the car in that situation, so I don't blame Glock. Either way, if Ferrari didn't screwed Massa so many times, he'd be champion that year.
Right well to me that doesnt sound like a stall at all , he's engaging neutral in the semi automatic gearbox in order to roll up to his grid position.
It wasn't a stall by Mansell. The engine had a problem which meant it sometimes cut out at low revs, but then it would automatically reset itself and then restart a moment later. Nigel explains this in the BBC's review of the 1991 season.
the greatest era of f1 (senna prost, mansell, piquet) most of the vid by japanese broadcast. wt happened now??? those japanese commentators were so passionate
Is active steering is enabled on that season?i hope not, because although it keeps you from spinning but it add a little bit effort to steer or maneuver your car, which affect one's driving style and it add a big undsteer issue, happened to me.and im not compatible with it,anyway

Take it easy guys ,Lewis will be in F1 for at least 10 years from now...so we will talk later...ok....
TheMrMouth 2 years ago
Actually, he did. Glock and Hamilton were best buddies before they moved up to F1, and they obviously still are. You have to admit, it was very "Hollywood" the way he won, with someone going off the track right at the last corner, gifting him the win. Exciting, maybe, but a co-incidence? Nah.
Hamilton was overhyped last year, the way the commentators never shut up about him made me sick, and now where is he? Stuck at the back, while Denseon Button gets his dick sucked by the press.
Hah...

AussieDefenceForce 2 years ago
What a silly comment Vambo. I knew 3 young karters who were as good as Lewis, but they did not get the McLaren package. You clearly know nothing about what went on.
AussieDefenceForce 2 years ago
We already know where Hamilton stands. Useless, unless he's in the best car, and handed the World Championship by Glock, after screwing up time after time..
By the way, he only got the McLaren drive cos he is black. Ron knew it would be a great publicity coup and he was right.
AussieDefenceForce 2 years ago
Anti-Hamilton are we? Shame. That in itself just values your opinions worthless and are just wasting your time even posting here. For the record, I'm British and I support Raikkonen (at the moment) but without fact, you're nothing, there are far too many of where you came from, and it ruins the sport.
Oh, and incase it has escaped your notice, this is an onboard from Nigel Mansell in 1991, a real era in the sport, not the oh-so-monotonous races of today where overtaking is only in the pits.
SennaAlonso 2 years ago
No I'm not anti-Hamilton. I just know that if he was truly great he would not be at the back, even in a poor car. Senna would never have been at the back, even in a car with 3 wheels.
And yes the 90s were a great era. I've been watching since the 70s though so I probably know more about F1 than you.
Add to that the 2 seasons of British Formula Ford I did, and I don't consider my opinions about racing worthless. What makes you an expert then?
AussieDefenceForce 2 years ago
I don't consider myself an expert, I just feel it's necessary to point out your deluded fanatical views, since it is pretty childish, IMO.
And no, Senna would not be at the front in a slow car, look at the competitiveness today, drivers are robots with diets that will only contribute to their progression as a driver. Today, drivers aren't losing much time at all, probably tenth each lap. Besides, Senna was a qualifier, not a racer, incredible speed, but IMO, Prost was more efficient in a race.
SennaAlonso 2 years ago
Did I say Senna would have been at the front in a poor car? No, I said he'd not have been at the back in ANY car.
However, your point that Senna was 'not a racer' renders any further discussion with you rather pointless. LOL!!!!
AussieDefenceForce 2 years ago 2
OK, perhaps I worded it wrong, but he is not God. In comparison to his qualifying performances, his racing abilities weren't great, IMO, that's all.
OK, so if you're not at the back, where are you? That's a rather pointless 'hypothesis' seenas Senna is dead (and gets 5x more fans) and times have changed dramatically since his death, I doubt even he could get a Force India into the points or at least challenge for points.
SennaAlonso 2 years ago
Senna not a racer!!! I suspect you need to get up to speed with your knowledge.Racer was Senna,s middle name.
flyya531 2 years ago 2
I think you misunderstood what I said. Senna was amazing in qualifying, always outshone his team-mates, even Prost. But when it got to the race, Prost was better, because he could conserve the car, conserve his tyres and conserve his fuel (cars had limited fuel back then). Whereas Senna was quite aggressive on his car, so when he needed to settle down for a race, some of his speed was lost. Nevertheless, he still did great to beat Prost on occasions.
SennaAlonso 2 years ago
You really , don't know what are you talking about. He was the famoust and considered the best driver (also in numbers) before he died according to his average,Wins,Poles etc en 9 F1 racing years.
HE took Toleman to the podium and the last victories from Lotus or Mclaren in years.
You better watch football JUNK
beco 2 years ago
OK, If you're going to insult me, I'll lead you to another event. 1985 San Marino Grand Prix, the cars had limited fuel, Senna and Johansen drove very fast, but also used a lot of boost and inevitably ran out of fuel, whereas Prost drove carefully, and made it to the end of the race. I can agree that Senna was probably the fastest champion of all time, I'm a great admirer of what he achieved with Toleman, Lotus, McLaren and Williams but I think Prost was just as good when it mattered, the race.
SennaAlonso 2 years ago 2
Imola 85 bad example considering Prost was disqualified for finishing the race under weight.
DALCOLDARA 2 years ago 3
Well, I'm brazilian, and I race kart some times with friends of mine whom used to compeate in pro leagues. They say I'm fast for a guy who raced just a few times. What I know about karting in the rain with worn slicks... well, is very difficult to mantain the car in that situation, so I don't blame Glock. Either way, if Ferrari didn't screwed Massa so many times, he'd be champion that year.

When you drive onboard you should be exhilarated and in awe of the power, like you were in those days.
It just ain't the same in modern day cars....engine notes are weak as piss.

dextersno1fan 2 years ago
You can hear the engine stall and restart itself at 0:10 . Mansell had that happen a few times throughout this race and still finished 2nd.
mvfF1Fanatic 2 years ago
Right well to me that doesnt sound like a stall at all , he's engaging neutral in the semi automatic gearbox in order to roll up to his grid position.
dave41184 2 years ago
It wasn't a stall by Mansell. The engine had a problem which meant it sometimes cut out at low revs, but then it would automatically reset itself and then restart a moment later. Nigel explains this in the BBC's review of the 1991 season.
mvfF1Fanatic 2 years ago
I thought F1 in those days were not allowed to carry a starter engine onboard?
gold333 2 years ago
They weren't. The engine was restarting itself. Don't know how, but Mansell said that's what was happening.
mvfF1Fanatic 2 years ago
the driver snapping the car around the start is crazy. the car moves 5 feet to the left in 1/4 a second. crazy response time.
and what was his lap time?

Is active steering is enabled on that season?i hope not, because although it keeps you from spinning but it add a little bit effort to steer or maneuver your car, which affect one's driving style and it add a big undsteer issue, happened to me.and im not compatible with it,anyway
