If I had to guess, it's a 3.8 liter turbo that came in the G-body Regal GN and GN-X in the mid eighties. If you don't know about these cars/engines, do some reasearch. There's tons of info about them and lots of suppliers for aftermarket parts. They can make gobs of power.
I love watching this video still !... almost as much as my own, hehehe. Just curious if you got any more footage at mosport, maybe onboard? PS; like the ice racing
I'm not sure what engine is in his other car, (he has two, blue 240's). However, I do know that the engine in the 240Z in this video is a 4.3 Chevy. From which G.M. vehicle it originated I can't say but I will ask.
wow that is so f**k up I cannot belive that that a buick 6 beat a dodge 10 and when you look at it he is racing really hard the only other thing he could have done is drop down even lower into his gears but that is suicide but works for about 5 min then you crash when your rear end comes out but this is the most amazing race... but 9min45 sec there is a f**king kia or a hondie hahaha which really now they can't be serious ... how fast did you go on the straights
Actually - if you watch the video carefully - the Viper (driven by me) gains ground through most of the corners (turn 2 included) - but loses out on straightaways.
The Viper is very well setup for this track, but the Datsun has a huge weight to HP advantage.
@darthviper2006 yep and you have better corner tech than the driver in the S30. if he would use more of the track you would have had trouble keeping close to him (I know assuming it was a guy driving)
I like your Viper but I love That Z. That Z gives me hope that my car could be a race car. I saw your crash on youtube. Rough luck man sorry. Is there any way you can tell me what year of Buick V6 3.8 that is in that z? and if you know what frame mods that Z has on it? or if you know if That 75 y/o guy put his Z on the internet where it would be. Thanks For the video man. I love the sound of your viper.
Oh that is classic. That Z just walks the Viper everytime they get on a straightaway. I'm surprised the Viper is keeping up with the Z in the tighter corners. The Z should handle every bit as good.
If you wanna see another Z walk another viper, do a search for "RB25 280Z vs Hennessey Viper ". That gets pretty ugly.
Not likely. A long, heavy motor like the Viper's would destroy a lot of the Z's handling. The Buick 3.8 V6 sits pretty far back in the engine bay and isn't terribly heavy. Plus, that 3.8 makes a ton of tractable power... and can get great gas mileage :)
If you don't like it don't watch or you wish you had one. This car and the driver are kick ass and i bet if you were racing whith him he would be kicking your ass all the way. I just wonder if the car has grand national straight six or a V8 ? if any body know let me know pls. Way to go grand pa wopem one by one thats Z style.
The L28E is what the datsun has and the bottom end is so strong they made a diesel out of it once. You can't make the same claim on 99% of other motors out there. The L28 is stronger than the RB26 and look up the guy who cut up 3 KA24 dohc head and bolted them to a L28, theoreticaly faster than a RB26!
I personally doubt the L28 bottom end is stronger than the RB, but it's a moot point. With both engines the main limitation is the head flow & cooling ability. Inline 6 motors are naturally strong bottom ends. We'll wait and see how much HP the L31DETT actually gets before talking about how strong the L28 block REALL is...
The L28 block is so strong in fact that Nissan did nothing to it when they made the L28d(diesel). All they did is cast the head from iron instead of aluminum. I personally doubt you knew that.
well the chase is better than the race, presses you to focus on your line to always get closer to the guy i front. Nice run was like if I was shotgun ahhhhh *good feeling*
The Viper is a 2006 Competiton Coupe. That's a factory built, track-only car. The Datsun, well, it's got a Buick engine in it! He's still racing it (the driver is 75!!!) - but this year the Viper beat him in all the races on the way to a second championship.
@darthviper2006 Iv had 3 280z and know a bunch of the z guys in atlanta, and the car you describe sounds a lot like the cars a gentleman by the name of TurboTom builds. He built these motor as 3.8L twinturbos i know owners of both the 280Z and 510 with them preped by him but that was years back
Yes, sorry, a friend pointed out the 'more' button too late. I actually lived near there and in the off season drove around the track in a '65 Ford LTD boat and later my '57 Chevy. great fun!
Thanks to the Viper camera car driver for this, brilliant. The 70 year old in the Z is a damm good driver, note his use of the brakes to steady the car/help it turn in, just one example of his skill.
I'm building a SB-327 240Z hybrid right now. The end result will be a car that weighs 2300lbs soaking wet and puts 350HP to the ground through it's incredibly durable stock Fuji Heavy Ind. driveline. The little antique Datsuns are screaming for more horsepower and have the engineering to plug and play with 3 times stock horsepower.
Mate I have a 240Z with a worked 302W, and the diff as tough as it is is totally stuffed now, mind you it took 3yrs to kill. I'm only guess at my hp but it would only be around 300 at the bags tops. Looking for a new diff solution now but its a headache as the engine is being rebuilt to make around 500-525hp. Wish me luck. 'All hail the mighty Dato!'.

Other than the back straight I'd rather be in the Z around this track, you got to see turn two in person to realize horsepower isn't everything.
